Excellent selection of Beatem ups here. My personal favorite is Alien vs Predator. One of the very few that have command specials. ^.^
yeah I learned a crap load about random beat em ups from the RFGO 61 vid I did. I gotta say I don't remember that D&D game. It looks pretty cool though.
Played all these and beat them, both in the arcades many moons ago and on emulators now. Good post, nice list. /applause
Good list. I remember seeing the X-Men game in arcades at a mini golf course near me but never playing it due it having 4 players. It sure looked aweseome though.
I just found out a week ago that there was an actual game called "Cadillacs and Dinosaurs". I think I saw it namedropped in an article about beat-em-up food items over on 1up and was like "Wait...wha?". Now that I have confirmation that it's a good game, I'll have to not-download it so I can give it a shot.
Nice blog! I remember seeing fighter games in the arcades but I was always drawn more to racing or shooting games.
vApathyv, I believe Cadillacs and Dinosaurs was also a comic book and a cartoon series in the early 90s.
Wait...really? HOW DID I MISS TH-Wait, I was anywhere between 1 and 5 during the proposed "early 90's"...nevermind. Still, worth looking into!
I could have used the Simpsons on this list. Also, try the punisher on the Xbox, that game was fantastic
Forgot some of the more important Avengers quotes...
Avengers: "Why should it goes well?" not a typo
Mandarin: "SEE MY POWAAAAAAH!"
damn, that first one shows just how much work used to go into making games

Where in the 9 circles of hell is River City Ransom from the NES? That's the one that started it all and not many of the newer ones had as many features at it.
There is a a severe lack of Battle Circuit AND Armored Warriors on this list.
This worries me.
Shadow of Mystara made me feel better though. Great list btw.

Either I'm retarded or I just forgot, BUT SINCE WHEN WAS THERE AN ARCADE VERSION OF BATTLETOADS!!!!!!!!! this is news for me, I will now hunt down a cabinet and play the shit out of it.
I've played numbers 2,3,4,5,6,8, and 9. All seems in good order and arcade Battletoads has me salivating. Agree with the question; Why no love for Golden Axe:RODA, it beats out Turtles any day.
Sadly although I played the 6-player X-men cabinet, I never did so with any friends, ever, not even just two of us. I did however play and complete Aliens vs. Predator 3-player, my friends as Predators, myself as Linn (she had all the right moves). Ahh nostalgia overload.

Jeez, haven't seen you in a while. Nice to see you still haven't lost your touch.
Yeah, the only game on this list that I've played was the X-Men game. God, I played the hell out of that game at my local bowling alley when I was a kid.
And Cadillacs and Dinosours... The name alone warrants it a play through.

Ok, I'm going to try to reply to everyone's comments here, pardon the wall-o-text.

Dude, I loved the Simpson's arcade game...but you have to admit, it was balls. Yes I said it, balls. I mean, the story was tenuous at best, generic beat 'em up format, and worst of all...it took too much creative license with the characters. I still <3 you and that game, but don't think it didn't cross my mind.
@ Booerns
It was a toss up between Cap'n America or Bad Dudes...ugh.

Not to be a dick about it...but you need to reread the title and/or the entire blog. River City Ransom came out on the NES/X68000/PC Engine only...except its release on the Wii VC.

Battle Circuit was a great game, but I'm sad to say that I only played it maybe once or twice...nowhere near the amount of cash I've blown on the above games in my childhood, or even better as an adult at the nickelcades. Armored Warriors, I had to look it up and I have to say...I really want to play it though it reminds me of a few SNK side scroller beat-em-ups.
@ braulio09
I said it before but...Heeeyyyyyy Buddy!

Golden Axe...well, I always thought that game sucked except for the Gnome Kicking aspect. It was pretty and had some original ideas, but me putting it up there compared to some of the excellence that Capcom pumped out doesn't seem right, and as far as it beating TMNT...I have to respectfully disagree here, that game wins on nostalgia factor alone. I mean, for a kid who was 9, being able to pick your own turtle and beat up on the Foot Clan and Krang was so much more awesome in the arcades than the turd we got on the NES first.
@ Requiem
Magic Sword is...in my opinion, more of a shooter than a beat 'em up. It's a great game but the style of play is more of a platforming/shooter not a 'press A to win' brawler.
@ 007
Motherfucking Cadillacs and Motherfucking Dinosaurs, in the SAME GAME. Play it.

yeah, i guess i can see where you're coming from, but magic sword is awesome. Would you classify the king of dragons in that way as well, that's a great game as well
Knights of the sword is pretty good, i played it for the first time ever a couple of months ago (capcom classics collection 2 ps2)
