About Me

Hey robots, I'm Excremento, but you cool and old skool Dtoiders know that already, this is merely for the N00BS. I've been a videogamer for as long as I can remember. I have well over 27 years of video game experience that I rely on daily, and a near encyclopedic memory of gaming starting with the Commodore 64 and ending with whatever is the current hotness.

I've got my own blog at MediaWhoreNetwork that I try to write on when I'm not too busy...and just recently have decided to come back to do a few Community Blogs here on Dtoid now that most failbloggers don't exist anymore. I'm still here fellas (and ladies) updating as often as I can for all of your enjoyment.

Any of you out there who wish to chat it up with ol Ex can do so at:

A Weird Kid's Top 10 -- Albums To Game To
Excremento | 11:56 PM on 10.02.2007 24 comments

I really miss having games that have great soundtracks, maybe I just have the retro-glasses on but I miss the days of 8 or 16-bit sound effects and mainly music. Sure, there are games that have great soundtracks, but also, there are games where you couldn't give a fuck about whatever is blaring through your speakers.

Luckily nowadays most game manufacturers have custom soundtrack settings available for you to use. Thank goodness! Tonight's top 10 is something that I have serious passion for, music. I'll share with you my favorite 10 game-playing albums I use on my Xbox 360.

Since multiplayer sessions don't generally use music in the background this would be a good list to implement at that time. It's seriously hard for me to whittle this list down to just 10, so here are my honorable mentions:

Gwar -- War Party
The Mars Volta -- Deloused In the Comatorium
Rammstein -- Mutter
Pantera -- Far Beyond Driven
The Bloodhound Gang -- Hooray For Boobies
Reel Big Fish -- Turn The Radio Off
Dethklok -- The Dethalbum
Daft Punk -- Discovery

Bullet For My Valentine -- Hand of Blood

Ahh, what a great way to start the list off. Bullet for my Valentine is still relatively new as far as the music industry is concerned. This Welsh quartet's EP only has 6 tracks, but I'll be damned if "Hand of Blood" and "Cries in Vain" don't kick ass when you're sticking a shotty in someone's face.

Sparta -- Porcelain

It's hard to pick a band that you love so much to be near the bottom of your list...this was the second album from the Texas Post-Hardcore group, released shortly after the death of one of the key innovators of music in our generation (that you probably never heard of) Jeremy Ward, the lead singer's cousin.

The songs are hauntingly awesome and beautiful at the same time, especially the first two tracks which hit the ground running "Guns of Memorial Park" and "Hiss the Villain", the album then takes a nice break around the middle with "Lines in Sand", what a fucking great song, especially when its 2 AM and your caffeine buzz is wearing off.

Rollins Band -- Weight

Henry Rollins. My Hero. The album Weight, doesn't have a bad track except for the weak sauce of one song, quite possibly the song that he is most known for, "Liar". Henry can make your anger come up and make you feel better about your "solitary-refinement" when playing games against ignorant people with songs like "Civilized" where he even says "Man I see you get cut down!" Great album from one of America's best men.

311 -- Transistor

311, love 'em or hate 'em, but personally I love these guys. Ever since Grassroots, 311 has been making damn good music. Their best work was this album. Originally slated to be a double album, they changed their mind and decided to make a single disc, and it weighs in at nearly 68 minutes and has a ton of content. Check out the tracks "Jupiter" and "Light Years".

Goldie -- Timeless

Goldie, if you're a fan of Drum and Bass, thank this man right now. One of the early innovators of the genre, his album Timeless is a joyful romp through the highs and lows of drum and bass. The first song "Timeless" is a 21 minute opus that leads you through 3 courses of dnb bliss. The other hot track for me is "Sea of Tears".

UNKLE -- Psyence Fiction

DJ Shadow and James Lavelle's epic trip-hop album encompasses so many different styles of music it makes your head spin. This album has the track featured in the Assassin's Creed commercial "Lonely Soul", many of the tracks have guest artists featured on them like "Rabbit In Your Headlights" featuring Radiohead's Thom Yorke. This is a must have album if you are a fan of trip-hop.

Tenacious D -- Tenacious D

You can't not be a gamer and listen to this album while teabagging your friends in multiplayer. Nothing is better than cranking up "Fuck Her Gently" in the middle of a match and singing along with it. Good times, good times.

Coheed & Cambria -- Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV| Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness

Coheed & Cambria are perhaps my most favorite band of my generation. This album, their third venture, is a masterpiece of rock and science fiction. The story behind the album is that an author is going nuts trying to end the story he is writing and debating whether or not to kill off a character in his story because she is the representation of the girlfriend that dumped him in real life. He goes nuts enough to believe that his alter ego is the demonic "Ten Speed of God's Blood and Burial", that's right a demonic bicycle. If you can handle Claudio Sanchez's voice being in falsetto alot, its better than any album by Rush. Go. Buy. Now.

The Crystal Method -- Tweekend

From "Wild, Sweet and Cool" all the way through "Blowout" you can't go wrong with The Crystal Method's second album. I remember so many sleepless nights playing Unreal Tournament on my PC to this CD. Not to mention all of the times it was in my CD player mowing the yard. It's not the best that the group has to offer but is one of the truest game albums I have an example of.

DJ Shadow -- Endtroducing...

DJ Shadow...the man is a fucking genius who turned the trip-hop world on it ear with the release of his first album Endtroducing... The album consists of songs that were made using an Akai MPC60...that's it, and it's fucking amazing. The album goes through many movements with the best song in my opinion being "Midnight in a Perfect World". Its a great album and you'd probably be surprised with how well it's made, and is my favorite CD to game to.

Well, I know that there is no possible way that I could include the myriad of music that is out there in the world, but this is as usual just my opinion. I hope that there's some of you out there who'd agree with me, or even better, give a few of these groups a listen if you've never heard of them. Thanks for reading and please don't beat me up too much for not having your favorite group listed here. Enjoy!

Wow, that's a fucking weird list you have there.

Never thought I'd see Coheed & Cambria (DO NOT WANT) and The Crystal Method (DO WANT) in the same list.

I found that Thrice's "Vheissu" was great to listen to while playing the Prince of Persia's.

Dragon Force is pretty sweet.

I guess what I like to listen to depends on what I'm doing. When I MMORPG, I like to listen to Bebop, believe it or not. Coltrane, Rollins, Parker, Davis, etc.

I guess it keeps me from getting bored when I grind.

You gotta love music lists that feature artists so obscure, they HAVE to be cool. :)

That UNKLE album is great. At least what I remember of it. It kept us all company during a lot of late night college acid trips.

No links? How are we supposta get this all off itunes / amazon / mediacrapbucket if you don't provide links to the major clearing houses instead of to the artists websites where we could purchase the album from the source instead of going thru their corporate masters? Wait, I feel like I just channeled the spirit of Ralph Nader... he's not dead? Weird...

It is impossible to play Fuck Her Gently in my group of friends without every last one of them singing along.

As for myself, Worms goes hand-in-hand with GZA's Liquid Swords.

No RUSH?

Rush doesn't get lots of "official"-type accolades, but it IS a nerd's band, and if there's one things Rush is good for, it's GAMING.

I dig Coheed though. I've actually gamed to that album before myself a few times because I thought it was good for it.
