About Me

Hey guys, it's Dan or as everyone here knows me (including you, because you're looking at my blog), EternalDeathSlayer. Yeah, I jacked it from Grandma's Boy, eat me. Anyway, I love video games, but more importantly I also love to talk about video games, hence why I am here on Destructoid with you. I've got a wonderful little family of 2 kids and a wife and we all play games in some shape or form. My wife enjoys WoW (probably a bit too much) and playing Halo with either myself or her friends. My kids like kid stuff like Kinectimals or flash games on the PC. And me? I like almost everything. So long as a game is fun or has the ability to effect my feelings or emotions, I'm game.

Consoles:

Xbox 360

PS3

Wii

I play them all, but truthfully it's not in an "All Consoles are Equal" sort of way. I prefer the 360, mainly because I know more people who own one, but I do play my PS3 whenever a worthy exclusive is released. The exclusives make the purchase worth it. As for the Wii, well, it gets ignored most of the time. But I pull it out from time to time, usually when a big Nintendo game is released for it.

My Favorite Games:

10. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
9. Gears of War
8. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (Theme Song FTW)
7. Final Fantasy IX
6. God of War
5. Super Mario Galaxy
4. Chrono Cross
3. Super Mario Bros. 3
2. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
1. Resident Evil 4

And there you have it. I love Destructoid and it's amazing community. I will probably never leave.

Why no love for God of War on Dtoid?
EternalDeathSlayer | 1:51 AM on 01.13.2008 36 comments

EDIT: Author's Note: When I say no love on Dtoid, I mean amongst the community, not the editors and the website itself. Jesus Fucking Christ.

I've noticed that a lot of people on Dtoid seem to have a problem or two with the God of War franchise. Maybe it's just those who comment on my blog, but I see a lot of people writing it off for no apparent reason. This is absolutely befuddling, as the both the original and it's sequel are easily two of the last generation's finest games.

Sure, you could say it's just a testosterone fueled action game, something we've all probably played before. And you'd be right, sort of. But God of War is so much more than just another action title. It's play mechanics are practically perfect, and they also manage to strike that fine balance between being accessible but also being rewarding to more skilled players. Oh, and you get to rip people in half at the press of a button. Did I mention that?

In all seriousness, the games are amazing and if you haven't played them then I suggest you do ASAP. They feature well written stories and have a wonderful cinematic flair to them that really adds to the game. While the story suffers a bit in the sequel, the first one is awesome and really makes you feel good about making Kratos rip peoples heads off.

Speaking of Kratos, he's quite different from most video game heroes. He's more of an anti-hero if anything, although we could just call him an asshole, as he doesn't really care for saving the world. He's out for revenge and will kill anyone who gets in his way, even innocent men. You'd think this would make you dislike him, but anyone with a set of balls will fall in love right from the start. He's the ultimate badass, able to kill men with his bare hands yet still finding time for the occassional threesome. One of my favorite characters of all time.

I know this post is really a waste of time, but I'm bored and I felt the need to tell some of you what you're missing. If you've yet to play either game, go pick it up. The first one goes for $20 or under new and is really a good deal. I beg you to at least try it out if you haven't. I enjoyed the games so much that I actually bought a PS3 just to be able to play God of War 3, whenever it comes out.

I guarantee that you'll be happy you bought one of them the moment you rip someone's legs off and beat their head in with them. Trust me on this one. To all you who have played these games, please do let people know just how great they are. And although I'm a firm believer in people having a right to an opinion, if you disagree with this then I think it's time to see a shrink. Just kidding, but you get the point.

Oh, and it had bewbs. Lots of bewbs:

Hey, you get experience points (red orbs) if you hit it. Can't go wrong there. And no endless dialogue trees needed, just press the right button. Win.

And to help illustrate the brutal awesomeness of Kratos, just check out this video:

All to get a key.

Is this post awesome? Vote it up!

sure it's fun
sure it's got a sex minigame

but at the bottom of it all... it's just a greek Devil May Cry.

i still like it.

Because everyone decided that your heart alone held enough love for God of War and they had no need to contribute :)

@ bottled dark: I'm happy that you like it, but come on now! A Greek DMC? It's quite different from that game, although I will admit the red orbs and stuff are stolen shamelessly. It's a lot more accessible than DMC and overall I prefer the story here. Plus, no cheesy dialogue. I have horrible visions of Dante taunting his enemies in the first fight of DMC3. Pizza Time! or whatever the fuck he says. Fail.

@ Shipero: Yes, yes you do.

I'll be honest. I've only played the demo of the PSP version and really all I wanted to during the whole thing is play Devil May Cry 3.

I want to play the others. But other games keep getting in my way.

Whiteboy, how can you say DToid has no love for God of War? Do you remember the Betrayal contest?

Coonskin: I was kind of new, I do remember it though. I'm not saying Dtoid itself, I mean the community. The cbloggers and stuff like that. A lot of people bring up God of War whenever I rail on a game for it's lack of innovation and whatnot. I know some people love it, just wondering how so many seem to not.

The God of War franchise is my personal favorite of all time. Me being fascinated with Greek and Roman mythology has something to do with it also.

Oftentime in a dark corner, during the last hour of the last day, Atlas sits in his leatherback chair and ponders how Whiteboy did a 180 and looked into the light.

Is it trickery? Is it madness?

Could it be a sign?

God of War rules, except for that FUCKING UNDEAD MINOTAUR KING OH FUCK I HATE IT FUCK FUCK AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
(playing spartan difficulty first playthrough is quite hard, i nearly broke my controller on that boss. But finally i beat it... only to have ares be a cheap dick as well. I guess ill have to get back to that sometime)

You're fully right though, its such a kickass game, anyone who likes extreme violence should play it.

However you're just plain wrong about the opening sequence in dmc 3 :P. Its so awesome and the cheesiness is funny.

Thornn: I know you're kind of poor but if you ever can afford a used PS2, do buy it. It's an amazing value after so many years and so many wonderful games. And notice how you only played a bit at a friends and liked it. It's that type of pick up and play accessibility that is one of the games greatest strengths. But of course it also has depth for the more skilled players.

Fuck, even my wife loves them. She's beaten both on the hardest difficulties. It's one of her gaming obsessions. Kratos is her favorite character in gaming.

@ Reaprar: Nothing memorable huh? Did you watch the above video? I remember that one crystal clear. Or the 2nd games final boss battle? Why must a game's sequel be so different from it's predecessor? Why can't the developers just tighten up what came before and give us more of what we love?

And it is not DMC with titties. I don't get that arguement at all. It's honestly completely different. There are no fucking guns, just to start.

God of War can be enjoyed by anyone, DMC is for masochists.

What what what!? I'm not a masochist and I love DMC. It's alot of fun for me. I don't play on the super high levels or anything, But it's enjoyable on Normal for me.

@ frozenbabylon: DMC 3 was practically impossible for me on normal. I know, I fail at DMC. I give the devs credit, it's a well made game that can be fun to play, but I can't get into it. Too intimidating.

Tell you what. Go play the special edition on Easy Automatic (The game is a BLAST that way) and I'll go play God of War. We'll meet back in 1 week and swap stories.

@ Frozenbabylon: I'd love to do that with you, actually. Try something different. But I'm still paying off bills so I can't afford to buy it, even for the price of 20 bucks.

Plus, I've still got a million other games to play like SMG and Mass Effect.

There's no robots.
There's no para-para.

The PSP demo is impressive for a handheld though. It's basically God of War on a small screen, but it's still solid.

Ummmm...that's why they had a God of War CONTEST and a God of War banner on the front page and I always say that "GoW" is reserved for GOD OF WAR and not Gears of War.

This blog is made of laym.

@ BSD: Right then. Remember that not everyone has been with Dtoid since the beginning. And, this is just from my experience on Dtoid. A lot of people seem to take issue with GoW being on my top 10 list, so I'm simply telling them why it's fucking sick. SMASH DOJO updates can be pretty laym sometimes.

EDSRW is your new name.

I have played, and completed, boy God of War installments.

As for answering your original question: Dtoid is an independent site, which means there is no obligation to whore out to any game in particular. Everyone has their own opinion, and GOW has kind of been out of the limelight recently with all of the now-gen releases.

It's like me asking why nobody is talking about Power Rangers Super Legends.

@ liqideos: I'm not talking about the site itself, just it's users. You know, the ones who don't work for Dtoid. Many of them have called me out over my love of GoW for some reason. I don't expect the editors to whore the game out, especially considering how old it is.

Meh, you've formed an identity linking you to a particular franchise. I get a bunch of crap for my Power Ranger watching/game playing.

The only way to get true acceptance is to just drop the words: "Epic", "lulz", or "raptor jesus", into all of your posts.

It does look pretty similar to DMC, but that doesn't mean that GoW doesn't deserve respect. I'm going to pick up parts one and two soon.

Can you switch weapons in real time in GoW?

Also, raptor Jesus.

there are so many versions of GoW, i have myself 8 games like it for the PS2 -- my favs being Devil Kings (not like DMC but damn fun), Brujingai:Forsaken City, DVC trilogy, Chaos Legion, God Hand, Blood Will Tell, the Bouncer, and Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga (crazy fucked up killin with a twised mind fuck essence)

@ Onisaur: While it's true these games are all similiar in different ways, none are quite the same as God of War. Think of the context sensitive button pressing sequences!!!!! No game has handled those like GoW except for RE4, which actually came out a few months before the first GoW. None of these games has as epic a scope as GoW. None of these games can match up to God of War.

IMO

God of War is a series everybody should experience. It's one of the few action games that I wasn't just bored wading thru waiting for a boss fight. Everything was good in it.

And if you put the time to upgrade your fighting skills, you don't want the game to stop throwing enemies your way for you to mutilate and rip in half. Good Stuff indeed.

Nobody can suck at it. Kratos is like Rambo+Rocky+Leonidas... It's almost impossible to lose with him..
