No, it's probably not what you may think. Then again, perhaps it is. Here's the story so far:
I bought my son his first video game for his third birthday. Why, you ask? He loves playing video games, his favorite being GTA4. He loves to tell me how to make the man jump and punch, and he absolutely loves driving the cars in the game. He's been begging for his OWN video game for a while now, and I decided to finally oblige since it's his birthday.
Now, I have yet to give to him, seeing as how his birthday isn't for a another 2 days. Before we get into specifics and all that stuff you're supposed to do when you blog, let me show what game I picked up for the little man:
Hable Espanol? Fuck no.
That's right.
Go,Diego, Go! Safari Rescue. Now, before you bemoan my choice of game for my 3 year old, let me explain. It's the year 2008. While some of us may have had no problem picking up
Super Mario Bros way back in 1986, today's games are a different breed. Would I have loved to introduce my son to gaming with Mario? Of course. But for all it's wonderful and simple gameplay,
Super Mario Galaxy is a bit too advanced for most 3 year olds, including mine. Plus, I already have that game so that would've been a weak ass gift. Besides all of this, Diego is one of his favorite shows, so it seemed natural.
So what is a dad to do for his budding videogame junkie? Well, I wanted it to be a Wii game, figuring the mechanics might be simpler if I got the right game. I did some research, first and foremost. I checked Metacritic, which led me to the
IGN Review of the previously mentioned "game based on an annoying kids show that teaches my son a language he doesn't need to know". As you'll see if you click the link, the game actually got a decent rating, a 7.1. And while some may spite me for trusting a review from a big corporate website, I seriously doubt money or anything else changed hands for that number score.
He'll get a kick out of stuff like pumping up this hot air balloon
So, spurned on by IGN's remarks about how the game is great for little kids and even features intuitive and simple motion controls (take note, every other 3rd party dev), I went out and got it. It even features some sort of "parental help" mode which enables me to help my kid along should he not understand something.
I doubt the kid will have a problem though; He managed to rob a taxi in GTA4 once and then proceeded to get 4 stars while eluding police. HE'S 3 YEARS OLD! How easy can you make it, Rockstar? (Disclaimer: I wasn't paying attention for a moment, and he didn't know he couldn't take the car.)
And that last sentence explains precisely why I'm sticking with kiddie games for my son from here on out, or at least till he's about 5 or 6. Then we can begin the Mario onslaught. Nintendo is going to rape my wallet when this kid grows up.
Anyway, we haven't played it yet, as it's not his B-Day yet. But I know he's going to love it. I'll be sure to blog about our experience playing together shorty after his big day. If he likes it, we'll buy him another game for Christmas. Until then, I love you Destructoid.
I'll never leave you bastards.
Also, I can't wait till the day my son is old enough to take on Gears of War 20's Co-op Campaign with me. Preferably when he's 25 and living in his own house. It is going to be AMAZING.
No wonder he stopped playing games with me. Bastard.
I am hoping when my daughter gets older she will like games, only time will tell.
Also "Plus, I already have that game so that would've been a weak ass gift." classic haha.
Nice read.
DIEGO FTW
Dora the Whore.
You are evil. :OD
"HI, MY NAME IS DIEGO and I SPEAK REALLY HIGH BECAUSE OF A STROKE!" ¬_¬
He actually did get the hang of Hulk Ultimate Destruction for the GC...but every time the Hulkbusters come out, he'd hand the controller over to me to take care of them.
Here I was, trying to get him to play the games I liked and figured a 4-year old could play, when I was overlooking an obvious choice like Go Diego. While I can't take more than 5 minutes of the cartoon, he and my 1-year old daughter love it. I guess I may have to pick this one up, if your son enjoys it, 'cause I'm pretty sure GameFAQs won't have any serious reviews. It'll just be tough to relinquish the TV if I'm playing a round of Rock Band or Madden.
Oh, look...GameFAQs has NO reviews. And the board comments I scanned through are all joke topics. Awesome.
Thanks for the article and the idea! Let us know how it works out.
wat
Nice read. You're a cool dad.
He's a pretty decent driver.
WAT??
Somebody book him for Letterman.!!
Um if that language is Spanish, knowing that is a good thing. If population trends continue Latinos will be the the race majority in this country by the middle of this century.
Also its great that you're gaming with him, I can't wait till my nephew gets old enough that I'll be able to game with him, he's only 5 weeks old now.
I liked this blog. It was sweet. I think it will be fun to see him get so excited about the game. Like we used to do as little kids.
And people actually think gaming is the domain of fat, sweaty, basement dwellers when you have little kids kicking ass on Soul Caliber at the age of 4
...Dammit now I want to play one right now
One day they'll become hateful angry teenagers though.
Until then, download Virtual Console games and make them play them.
That's his phone, and I'm not even kidding. My mum on the other hand likes computers very much (they're divorced but not because of that). So I played my first games with my mum. Believe it or not but the first notable games I remember playing with her were Leisure suit Larry, Wolfenstein and Commander Keen. Hell, the whole family played together. Two behind the PC and two sitting on top of the table behind it.
Conversations were something like this:
Takeshi: "Go left, LEFT, LEEEEEEEFT! Yeah shoot him, SHOOT, SHOOOOOOT!".
Mum: "You do the next part, it's too hard for me."
Takeshi: "OK mum, watch this, you just have to to this... that... and... done!"
Mum: "Aha!, I thought you'd have to do that first but that's much easier."
Or with Larry
Takeshi: "Mum, what's the English word for 'afstandsbediening'?
Mum: "You mean, 'remote control'? Here's the dictionary. It's more fun to look it up yourself."
She was right. Because of Larry, I got a head start in English classes. And no, I didn't get the sexual theme of that game. I was only giving the girls presents.
But back to your blog (I kinda drifted away because of those good memories). When I was young I didn't think it was that awesome to play with the whole family. But when you grow older you're thankful for introducing you to video-games. I hope Elijah (and Christina) will look back when they're older and get the same feelings I've got right now.
Thanks for making me remember EDS.
Also, I don't have kids.
