I was browsing the internets and decided to stop at Kotaku and what did I see? Why, a new game of course! Well, it seems new to me at least. The game in question is called
Band Mashup. It's from THQ, those guys known for licensed wrestling games and a never ending onslaught of Disney/Pixar games. Yes, there's a lot of games based on
Cars out there.
Anyway, here's some nice screens to take a look at:
There's not too much to see here really, as it looks somewhat similiar to
Guitar Hero or
Rock Band. You can however see what appears to be the Guitar Flamethrower. That's pretty win right there.
Apparently the game will feature over 150 songs, with 30 of these being so-called "Chart Toppers". Here's the catch: You'll be battling it out with 5 different versions of each song, including.....Ahh fuck this, read the copy pasta:
Band Mashups is the first time a musical mashup game has been delivered on Wii, allowing players to battle it out with their preferred musical style. Band Mashups features both an exciting two player versus mode and an extensive single-player campaign where players take on the role of one of eleven bands trying to topple the nefarious big boss Mr. Hong and take control of the faraway city of New Cadenza. Band Mashups introduces the innovative concept of music switching, putting the player winning the battle in control of the style of music both players hear. When an opponent turns the tide of battle, the music changes as well, switching between different music styles. Band Mashups features 30 classic and modern chart-topping hits from over the last four decades, all of which have been recorded in five different styles - rock, funk/hip-hop, country, Latin and marching band - for the game, resulting in a total of 150 unique, playable recordings.
And like the title says, you'll be using over 70 musical "weapons" over the course of the game. Whatever the fuck that means, it sure sounds like fun. Of course, as you'd expect we'll be using some form of motion control here to get things going. Of course. Waggling a controller is the best way to cover up shitty mechanics and obviously not well thought out game design. It's great if you're a lazy developer. It makes everything seem at least mediocre.
Jesus, everytime I imagine how this is going to work, my excitement and interest for the title diminishes. Fucking waggles.
But like the guys over at Kotaku said, the concept of the game makes it a possible purchase all by itself. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for this game, as it drops sometime in April. Hopefully it'll be something fun and new for you Wii, and it won't suck. Like 75% (that's being generous) of 3rd-Party Wii games have.
Who the fuck am I kidding? This is THQ, it's destined to fail. What the fuck have they done right recently? They excel at making decent and somewhat playable licensed fare, so who knows what we'll get. They did have some success by stealing gameplay concepts and mechanics from GTA with
Saint's Row, but who knows if they'll be able to strike gold again here. Well, more like silver with Saint's Row, but you get the point.

THQ has nothing for the hardcore gamers anymore except for Smackdown! vs. Raw. But TNA iMPACT! looks like it's going to have it's way with it.
Nice find, but it's going to flop.

For some reason when I read through the copypasta I read the bosses name as "Mr Hung". What's Orgazmo doing in a kid's game?
