Both of those statements are pure truth. I'm telling you, I haven't had this hard of a time with an RPG so early in the game since, well, ever. Of course I haven't played many of the more niche RPG's, mainly sticking with Square, so I could be wrong.
But this shit is tough. In my blog yesterday, I mentioned how I was trounced by a boss early in the game. I had defeated him, or so I thought, and then out of nowhere he comes right back, fully charged and ready to fuck.
You up.
Seriously, this fight was very difficult. In fact, I had quite a few members of our community, including Colette and Orcist, commenting on how they themselves managed to defeat this monstrosity of magic power. In the end, it came down to being prepared, and even that was barely enough. I think I got a bit lucky with this bastard. By the time all was said and done, he had actually knocked Kaim, who's a badass, out cold. I quickly cast Aqua with both Jansen and Seth and luckily this was just enough to finish him for good. Both attacks combined were only a bout 4HP more than I needed to kill him. He's that tough.
Oh, BTW, if you're wondering, the boss in question is pictured above. If you've encountered him than surely you know what I'm talking about, and if you haven't, then watch the hell out. He'll surprise you. And don't even get me started on the next fight you'll partake in, all before you find a save point.
But enough about that. If you're really interested in just how
I managed to beat him (and who would be?), ask and I'll tell.
What's more important is just how awesome Kaim really is. At first, you may get the impression that you have another Squall on your hands, a boring and quiet type. A man of few words. Honestly, I prefer my characters to have some sort of personality; Otherwise I feel it's best to just be a Silent Protagonist. But anyway, Kaim is starting to really pique my interest at this point. He is having more dreams of his 1000 year past, and his memories are starting to fall into place. I'm certainly not going to go into detail and ruin it for those that haven't played the game, but for those that have, I'll just say this: Prison Shell.
Wow. Kaim has lead a seriously fucked up life. I'm starting to understand why and how he became the man we see in front of us whilst playing, and I'm loving every second of it. While I'm not actually happy to see what's happened to him, I have become entranced by his life story. He is truly more than meets the eye.
In short, he could be one of the deepest and most complex (not mention fascinating) characters I've ever encountered while playing an RPG.
I can only hope this continues as I progress in the game.
That boss was frickin hard though.
I blogged about the difficulty of the bosses last week, and got some great responses. Surprisingly enough, they get easier as you go along. Well, it seems that way. Perhaps you just get better at preparing for the big battles. The best piece of advice that I've been given is from Jim Sterling: "It's all about being prepared, finding a setup that works, and making more use of white magic than most RPGs do (which rocks)."
That second boss took my lunch money, as well. I said to myself "that was way too easy," after beating him the first time. Then he pops back up, and guess who had no mana to fight back? This guy.
Wonderful post, and I hope you enjoy the rest of the game!
****SPOILER****
I had Kaim and Seth with fire rings equipped. That was unplanned, just had them on when I wandered into the fight. Jansen had the yellow band equipped. Basically I just had Kaim and Seth constantly attack the bugs while Jansen repeatedly cast Aqua on the boss. That keeps one bug charged at any time, so the boss takes ages to get mana, and like I said, there was one Zephyr needed and it was over. All characters were level 16.
****END****
Boss fights aside, I completely agree with your points about Kaim. LO's story and the game in general is one of the best RPGs I've played in a long time. Gives me the same awesome feeling I get when playing an FF game.
I had Seth and Kaim attacking the little monsters like everyone else, and Jansen casting Aqua. Also, I cast Prism once during each of the battles, which killed a few smaller monsters and also made it easier on Seth and Kaim. This made it hard for him to charge Para Flame.
The first time was a hell of a lot easier, I'll say that.
Also, Cooke is awesome.
Now that you've beaten him EDS, please tell me that watching Jansen try to teach them how to dodge the arrows is the funniest thing you've ever seen.
...I still think I deserved that wiicard...
