About Me

Hey guys, it's Dan or as everyone here knows me (including you, because you're looking at my blog), EternalDeathSlayer. Yeah, I jacked it from Grandma's Boy, eat me. Anyway, I love video games, but more importantly I also love to talk about video games, hence why I am here on Destructoid with you. I've got a wonderful little family of 2 kids and a wife and we all play games in some shape or form. My wife enjoys WoW (probably a bit too much) and playing Halo with either myself or her friends. My kids like kid stuff like Kinectimals or flash games on the PC. And me? I like almost everything. So long as a game is fun or has the ability to effect my feelings or emotions, I'm game.

Consoles:

Xbox 360

PS3

Wii

I play them all, but truthfully it's not in an "All Consoles are Equal" sort of way. I prefer the 360, mainly because I know more people who own one, but I do play my PS3 whenever a worthy exclusive is released. The exclusives make the purchase worth it. As for the Wii, well, it gets ignored most of the time. But I pull it out from time to time, usually when a big Nintendo game is released for it.

My Favorite Games:

10. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
9. Gears of War
8. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (Theme Song FTW)
7. Final Fantasy IX
6. God of War
5. Super Mario Galaxy
4. Chrono Cross
3. Super Mario Bros. 3
2. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
1. Resident Evil 4

And there you have it. I love Destructoid and it's amazing community. I will probably never leave.

I Love my WiiWare. Who's with me?

For the first time in a looonng time, I am actually excited for the future of the Wii. Just this week we've been privy to some great stuff, such as Steven Spielberg's Bloom Blox and of course, WiiWare. The former proves that third party developers really can make great games for the system. Anyway, for those of you that have missed something, WiiWare is Nintendo's download service for original games, sort of like XBLA and PSN. And it's off to a great start!

You wouldn't expect Nintendo to cater to independent developers, to do anything that helps them. What the fuck does Nintendo care about some upstart company trying to push their zany and non-conformist ideas? Right? Well, apparently I was wrong. In fact, I'd say Nintendo seems to be the most open to independent companies and their strange ideas. Take a look at WiiWare. Some of the shit coming out of there in the future looks incredible, and not to mention fresh and original. (Of course, I could still be wrong. I don't know what the fuck Nintendo thinks or how it conducts business)

We already received one of these original games this week, in the form of LostWinds. In this wonderful and beautiful little game, players use the Wii Remote to manipulate the wind, which helps this little guy with a big head get around. It's a platformer, but it's all done in 3D and it features a wonderful art style. It's very easy on the eyes. And while it's not the most mind blowing mechanic ever seen in gaming, using the Wii Remote to manipulate the wind is a lot of fun. I would say games like this wouldn't have a chance of release if not for services like WiiWare or XBLA. What publisher would package a 2D side-scroller like this on a disc for 50 bucks, even if the game was expanded and was made longer? Now, some say it's a short game, but I wouldn't know. I haven't finished it yet. I've been too busy with another great little game: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles:My Life as a King.

Now, I know I was talking about independent developers and one of those, Square Enix is not. But that doesn't change the fact that you probably wouldn't find this game on either XBLA or PSN. It just doesn't seem like it would fit. Anyway, the game is made of win. Sure, it's very casual leaning and you won't be seeing any action or anything you'd expect from an FF game, but here I am straight up addicted to it. So much so that I haven't touched GTA since WiiWare launched. I am on Day 80 out of who knows how many, and I am in love. Unlike other "resource management" games, this one doesn't force you to get too deep and invest too much thought. It's simple and quick, and as a bonus for Final Fantasy fans, it features a lot of imagery and designs you'll recognize instantly. The most exciting part for me was meeting the Mooogle Stiltzkin, who I remember well as the traveling mog that gave me awesome deals on items in Final Fantasy 9, my favorite of the series.

Side note: I downloaded about 8 dollars worth of DLC for this game. I am officially Square Enix's bitch.

If the WiiWare service can continue pushing out games of this caliber on a steady basis, they can count me as a fan. This is a very exciting time for independent developers, and for gamers also, it would seem. I can't wait to see what they've got in store in the future.

And just as food for thought: Can anybody honestly say that either the PlayStation Store or XBLA will be able to truly compete with Nintendo's offerings in the future? Nintendo already has the Virtual Console, which has quite a few gems on it not to mention (hopefully) many more classics on the way. And now they've got WiiWare. The future actually looks bright for Nintendo Wii owners. Perhaps this console will finally come into it's own critically and not just financially. We can only hope so.

Really? Wow, I guess I should look into this WiiWare. I kind of wrote it off but I keep hearing more and more people talk about how awesome it is. I'll probably DL Lost Winds tonight.

I'm definitely with you.

LostWinds was one of the greatest games I've ever played. Everything about the game was charming. I cannot wait for the sequel. I will probably download FFCC soon. I was unsure if I was interested at first, but the word of mouth is convincing me.

I love to see the console opening up to smaller developers, especially after experiencing LostWinds. Frontier has definitely called out the larger developers.

I agree. Those are the two that I Downloaded, and I'm pretty freaking in LOVE with MLAAK as a style of gameplay. I'd be completely happy if Square Enix franchised MLAAK as its own series, and just hop around into past FF universes.

What we need is a game called My Life As King, in which you live your life as me. You get to wake up, go to work, come home and watch anime, drink yourself into oblivion, and cry yourself to sleep at night.

2000 Wii Points.

@ Tubatic: If I could do My Life as a King in the FF7 universe, that would be amazing. We could even have to factor in Mako and it's effects on the world.

Could be fun.

Thanks!

I just remembered that Star Soldier R is supposed to be coming out for Wii Ware as well. That game looked incredible! As does Pokemon Ranch and two player wide screen Tetris. Wii Ware looks to be a success!

I love My Life as a King so much. Just that my fucking adventurers who are god damn level 20 can't get armor plating from a level 4 area. WHAT THE HELL!?

and by E3, nintendo better announce something to fix space limitation

and I too am Square Enix's bitch. I bought the "DLC" too.

@ Covah. Though those are low level areas, the "fetch research upgrades" quests are much higher levels, by some 10-20 over the area's level.

And again, My life as a king is a time sink. I love it. I'm on day 102.

Don't bother with the additional races DLC. I bought the addt'l races and I'm not even really using them. Get the luxury house and the 11 dungeons DLC for cheap.

I'm really interested in seeing the sales numbers on this stuff. CoorsLight-taku has an interview with the makers of Lost Winds, whom are also waiting to hear about the numbers before deciding what to do next.

@ covah: Have you received the ability to build taverns and subsequently form parties? A well rounded party should do the trick, although come to think of it, I don't think I've beaten that boss for the armor plating. My guys are like level 23 or so.

Is it wrong that I have not updated my Wii in months? WiiWare failed to excite me in my pants, and so I cry into the night and hellish LA heat.

Also, I be a starving student :(
