So like many Dtoiders, I went out and purchased Dead Space this past week. To say I was excited for this game is understatement, what with it's supposed Resident Evil 4 style gameplay. In fact, when I called GameStop to see if the game was in on Tuesday, I flipped when I was told it wouldn't arrive until Wednesday. Of course, after calling Best Buy and finding they didn't have it either, I felt bad for the poor GameStop employee. Needless to say I was extremely disappointed. After all, this game was probably my most anticipated game of the year besides Gears of War 2. But I should have figured -- GameStop always gets games on Wednesday, usually telling me that Tuesday is the ship date. Hell, they even tell me Best Buy shouldn't be selling it on a Tuesday, as if they're doing something wrong. But enough about my disdain for that shitty store. Back to Dead Space. The game bills itself as Survival Horror, the same as Resident Evil 4. The difference is, they're not stretching the truth at all like Capcom does. RE4 is a straight action game IMO. Dead Space truly personifies what the genre is all about, with it's scary as fuck atmosphere and very challenging gameplay. Monsters sometime come in swarms like RE, but not as much. Many times the developers resort to cheap "pop out" moments to scare you, but it works very well here. The opening scenes of the game really set the tone, letting you know you're in for one bone-chilling ride. Gameplay is a mix of shooting and some cool abilities such as stasis, for slowing down enemies, and Kinesis, for picking shit up and throwing it at monsters. It's pretty cool stuff, and the combat is even more enjoyable due to the diverse selection of weapons. You can have your basic handgun, but what's really great is weapons like the Ripper, which enables you to either hold a spinning saw blade in front of you or shoot blades long distance at enemies. Even better is that almost all the weapons have a useful secondary fire, something many games seem to fuck up. Of course, you can't mention this game without talking about it's impressive visuals and audio. I daresay that this is some of the finest sound work I've ever had the pleasure of experienced. It's definitely up there in my top 5 or so. Screeching and roaring sounds work well, especially when you don't see any monsters. You're always wondering where they're coming from. This works even better in the Zero-G areas of the game, as monsters can come from anywhere on the map. Many times I've been jumping around in zero gravity only to get the shit scared out of me by some freakish enemy.
As for the graphics, they aren't the best I've ever seen, but the game certainly looks very good. This is only helped by the exceptional art design on display here. In fact, this is a prime example of graphics being important in a game. It just wouldn't be as good a game if it wasn't this pretty. Gore is also great looking, and I especially liked seeing the blood and body parts floating around in Zero-G. Very cool stuff, and it shows the level of polish that went into this game. So in conclusion, I'd say if you're a fan of good shooting action or having the shit scared out of you then buy this game, preferably right away. I just hope I finish the game before Fable 2 and LBP come out. And Fallout 3. I'm only half way through the game. We gamers have a great couple months ahead of us, and this year may even eclipse last year in terms of great games. Anyway, stay awesome Dtoiders. I'll hopefully be blogging a bit more in the future. I miss you guys. Have a good one.

I think it's safe to say, at least in my opinion, that this is a top 2 or 3 game for the whole current generation.
It is THAT IMPRESSIVE!
Unrelated: Grandma's Boy fan?
Jimbo: Get it now!!!
Hell yeah I noticed it. I love that movie!
So much I plan on buying Downfall. At first I wasn't sure, but now I definitely want it. I hope this becomes a new series of games (as long as they're good). I love it.
I want an Isaac model or figure.
Who could have guessed the game would turn out so well?
I was beyond pleased when I realized they pulled it off, and did a great job. :)
...so yeah I'll probably rent it around February (not joking)
Oh and the gaming industry is fucking retarded when it comes to ship dates. At least DVDs/Blu-Ray is consistent when the movies show up on Tuesdays.
but it will have to wait till after Fable 2 and Fallout 3
Sorta like how people were saying Bioshock was so epic, yet it took me a good 6 months to finish it. Even then that was forced so I can see how the story finished, which made the experience for me even more crappy.
You are an engineer sent to a ship that is unknowingly infested with alien zombies; H.P Lovecraft style Alien Zombies the likes of which have not been seen in any game before. The closest you would get to creepy and awesome designs like this is in Silent Hill.
You have to take your time, analyze your enemy and figure out where you want to aim and what you want to do. Do you want to slow it down and then take out it's tentacles? Try to take out the arms and go up and melee it in the head? Or cut off it's big claw and throw it back at the creature?
You decide on your strategy for each monster, which all appear in differing and unique locations, ranging from the dead silence of space, zero gravity environment puzzles, to the hydroponic gardens that give the ship breathable air. The enemies run away if they are about to die, they crawl in to vents and come out behind you later and are just generally menacing and creepy in the way they act and move.
On top of all of that, it has a really interesting story that not only dabbles in subjects like the motivation of man, but also the effect of man in the universe and what life for humans has become; it's an awesomely fleshed out plot that has a lot of emotion built in to it and drives home the point of mans destructive and consumptive nature eventually turning back on him.
So is it the unique settings, the awesome plot, the interesting characters, the disgustingly beautiful alien zombies, creative AI, the innovative design or the amazing audio production that makes you think this game is generic?
"When it comes to horror though, it's serious business for me."
Didn't you hear that these guys actually studied photos of victims of gruesome deaths so that they could better imitate what a dead body looks like? Don't you think developers willing to go to that extent would know just a little bit about what makes something scary?
Again, you have not provided any information on why you think that game looks generic other than "I have not seen anything that interests me".
To you, this may not look like a very good game. But it is NOT, I repeat, NOT generic in any way shape or form. It adheres to conventions, GOOD ones, set by previous and equally great games, but you should not hold this against the game.
Good artists copy, great artists steal.
I am extremely happy with my purchase, EA did well!
I also find it pretty crazy how NO ONE talks about the inventory system!! It's all done in real time to add to the suspension and realism. What other game have you played that, when making a purchase in a store for weapons and items, you can get attacked, it has happened to me a couple of times! you just chilling, checking out your map or seeing what items you have gathered and you suddenly get attacked from behind, it's pretty intense.
I also like how when you are walking around any video/audio that gets displayed for story purposes is like the menu interface in a sense as it's displayed in real time floating in front of you from your suits display. It keeps the game moving as there is no pausing to listen to some nut jobs babbling at you or to watch some cut scene movie.
"Didn't you hear that these guys actually studied photos of victims of gruesome deaths so that they could better imitate what a dead body looks like?"
Yeah dude, hype it up. What would the study of a real corpse do to videogames compared to the study of a photo of a corpse? Indeed absolutely nothing. C'mon you believe that shit? But even if they did study some corpses, does that make this game better, scarier, or less generic? I don't think so. Have you seen how Silent Hill is made? In a fucking small cubicle somewhere in downtown Tokyo. That's not scary at all but the game is.
I haven't seen anything about this game but your 'blog in the comments' doesn't convince me to get it.
And please, what's up with that 'Good artists copy, great artists steal'? That's the oldest and most bullshit sentence alive in the creative business. How 'bout this: The best artists just shut the fuck up about it and die before they're even considered artists.
"Good artists copy, great artists steal" is not meant to be taken as literal as you have obviously taken it. Im not even going to bother explaining, because you obviously don't give a shit.
"What would the study of a real corpse do to videogames compared to the study of a photo of a corpse?"
Nothing? Did I say they studied corpses in person and that it was better than photos? No, so stfu. And if you think that knowing what you are creating down to the finest detail makes no difference to the end product, then you are just ignorant.
Go ahead and draw me a big daddy. Oh, you cant really draw one? That's because you have no idea what makes a big daddy, how the suit comes together, what powers the drill or any of that shit. You need to KNOW about something to successfully recreate it, and thinking otherwise is stupid. So yes, studying images of real corpses does make a huge fucking difference, but I said nothing about them studying corpses in person.
Also, did I say I was trying to convince anybody to buy the fucking game? Why the fuck do I care if you buy it or not? It is either your kind of game or not. But Im not going to sit there while somebody repeatedly posts in every thread about Dead Space about how generic and boring it looks when it is in fact that persons blinded opinion of the game and not the game itself.
