So it's like 9 AM here in lovable old New Jersey, and I've been struggling to get my children to eat their breakfast, as has been the tradition since we returned from our vacation in Walt Disney World a week ago. It's been a difficult experience, readjusting to this post-Disney life. It's hard not eating Mickey Mouse pancakes with the man himself for $35.99 plus tax every fucking day.
The lesson as always is do not have children.
Anyway, what's up Destructoid? Hopefully if you're a male, your cock isn't, cause that would be strange. I'm an ugly dude. As you might expect, my gaming has been down due to the previously mentioned vacation, but I did just recently receive a few games from reliable old GameFly. I love GameFly for it's ability to allow me to rent a lot of games that are worth playing but not worth buying. Games with great gameplay but extremely short length or severe lack of content.
Games like
X-Men Origins:
Wolverine. Remember, I just got back from vacation. I only received this game on Thursday and yet I had beaten it by Saturday, which is a short amount of time for me. I only play an hour a night on average nowadays, so this game is obviously not worth the $60 it would have cost to buy it. This is fine and even somewhat acceptable, considering the title is a licensed movie game. Besides this, the core game is extremely fun and satisfying. Perhaps a bit too fond of other games like
God of War, but fun nonetheless.
I feel bad because I'm not technically supporting the title, but oh well. Perhaps next time the developer and publisher will spend more time crafting a game of value and substance, whatever the fuck that actually means. Good luck to them. If they hit the mark, I'll surely notice and then perhaps next time I'll buy their game. But for now I will mostly rent games like this. I've been burned too many times now by games like this, games you shell out $60 for only to be finished playing in a few days time.
Fuck that shit.
So how bout you Dtoid? Any of you feel the same way as I do about rentals? Some hardcore industry advocates try and say renting is just as bad as stealing, but I certainly don't feel that way. If I really and truly love a game I rent, I'll buy it. Of course people say that all the time, but do they really do it?
True Story: I once split the cost of a rental of
Star Wars Battlefront with a friend when it was a new game, and I did in fact buy that game the next week due to that rental.
Oh snap.
PS: As for the word "games" in the title, ya know, the plural version of game, I also rented
Ghostbusters but I haven't gotten around to playing it yet. I would have liked to talk about that game as well but who knows when I'll be able to blog again? 20 minutes of computer time is tough to come by when you live with my wife.
Fuck that bitch.
In saying that though, i very rarely buy a game i rent. I already have a pretty good idea before a game comes out if i want to risk my dollars on it.
p.s. you bet your ass it's up.
I'll be renting quite a few games this year.
I'm sorry to hear you didn't like Wolverine. I really enjoyed it myself, but I got it on sale for only $30. I can understand why you wouldn't want to pay $60 for it. It doesn't really have any replay value, so once you beat it you will essentially put it down never to be played again, which sucks. It sucks to pay $60 for games like that.
I don't typically rent games. I usually just wait till a game is $20-$30 and then I buy it. For example, Bionic Commando recently dropped down to $20 and I bought it. I'm glad I didn't pay $60 for this, because it's not that good. RIght now, with the economy the way it is, you only have to wait a couple of months until a game drops in price.
But it was worth playing. Just not for 60 bucks.
Also, BC is 20 bucks? I'm so there. Just bought Sonic Unleashed for 20 bucks.
I'll still buy games at a pretty regular clip, but I definitely can't buy ALL of the ones I'm interested in.
I never rent games because I too pretty much know what a game is like. But that's not the only reason. I'm a lazy bastard. I never return rented stuff in/on time. If I don't think a game is worth the full price I'll probably get it later. I have the same thoughts about Wolverine. Probably worth a rent but yeah, all the fines I have to pay for bringing it back late will make me regret it.
Also, fucking WoW. I feel for you man.
@Silverdragon
What's wrong with you man? First you called me Takeshit and now this?! Hahaha!
Besides, for me, $60 is not worth a game that is fun for the first few days, then you forget about it shortly after. But it's an experience I was to see firsthand, so I have to go rental. X:Men Origins: Wolverine is the best example of this. Fighting a giant sentinel is a blast to do, but it's not worth the paying that money for one of three or four cool things you can do in the game. Games need to have more substance than that if they want my money.
Case and point: Gamefly has to buy X number of titles every time a new game releases so there's money funneled into the industry right there. And that's not a singular action. They sell games and, therefore, need to replenish their stock. More money to the industry. Add to that the general wear and tear on rentals and the cretins who have no issues whatsoever with stealing and again, Gamefly is funneling money back into the industry. It's a constant process. If anything they're helping the industry and those of us who rent and/or buy from them are too.
The bonus, as you point out, is dodging the $60 bullet on games that don't live up to the price tag. All things considered, it's a winning situation for everyone. Gamefly gets business, the industry gets supported and the gamer saves some major bucks.
I completely agree with you on not shellin out 60 bucks for a game that will be beat a few days later. Which is why i'm also bein picky with the games I buy now. I do need to resign up with Gamefly so I can rent them instead of waiting for a price drop or just skipping on it entirely. I dunno whats up with these developers lately. Too much graphic catering and not enough towards the gameplay mechanics and replay value. It's really starting to show in all games and not just the half assed games.
Yea I really liked Wolverine; probably twice as much as Ghostbusters, and renting isn't lame at all! Some of us just don't have $50-$60 to drop on a super short title that SHOULD be much less (MadWorld, lol).
Also, I live 10 minutes from Disney World :D! I hope you had fun, despite the absurd food prices! Epcot is my favorite park: what's yours?
Epcot is the least liked in my family, but personally I enjoy it. It's fun and educational. The Mission Space ride was fucking intense.
I do really love Epcot though. I remember when Mission to Space first came out and it was a lot more intense. I recollect getting off of it everytime and feeling like I needed to throw up. I don't know why but I loved it. They have toned it down since a couply people died on it a few years back, but it's still an adrenaline rush.
At nights I typically go to MGM and just ride Tower of Terror and the Aerosmith Rockin' Rollercoaster over and over and over until the park closes. I love those two rides.
The biggest drawback is the lack of potential loss, which has made me far less tolerant. The minute I get a whiff of shit or the game starts pissing me off, it goes straight back in the mail. If I had bought the game, I would likely have made more of an effort to get through it and find something good to 'enjoy'.
Renting isn't bad... But like ToiletDuck i usually have good sense of what's what.
Ghostbuster's is also PRETTY short... But all and all a more than unexpected GOOD time.
Also, Kids; you gotta love them!
(( *State Laws say so.* ))
Magic Kingdom is my 2nd favorite by far :D. I just really love Epcot's Soarin', Figment (nostalgic), the Countries (IE beer), Mission Space, and Jeremy Iron's soothing voice ride (aka the Epcot ball).
My wife and I are huge Disney fans as well, Silver. She works for them; it's the reason we live so close!
Also, yes, Jeremy Irons' voice owns.
Also, video games. I rent them and don't feel bad. Sometimes I buy what I rent.
OMG DONT EVEN TALK TO ME ABOUT THE ADVENTURER'S CLUB CLOSING DOWN. I went on the last night, and got a cup from it :D.
RIP COLONEL.
This is so inside it's scary!
Kungaloosh!
I'm so jealous it's not even funny.
I'll smother a motherfucker with a pillow.
My feelings exactly! There's absolutely nothing bad about renting games. It doesn't hurt the industry - that's a myth. If anything it ends up giving games far more exposure than they would otherwise get.
By the way... Why did you buy Disneyland pancakes? You could have just taken a shuttle bus to I-Drive and got a 2.99 b-buffet at that place across from Wet N' Wild
