About Me

Hey guys, it's Dan or as everyone here knows me (including you, because you're looking at my blog), EternalDeathSlayer. Yeah, I jacked it from Grandma's Boy, eat me. Anyway, I love video games, but more importantly I also love to talk about video games, hence why I am here on Destructoid with you. I've got a wonderful little family of 2 kids and a wife and we all play games in some shape or form. My wife enjoys WoW (probably a bit too much) and playing Halo with either myself or her friends. My kids like kid stuff like Kinectimals or flash games on the PC. And me? I like almost everything. So long as a game is fun or has the ability to effect my feelings or emotions, I'm game.

Consoles:

Xbox 360

PS3

Wii

I play them all, but truthfully it's not in an "All Consoles are Equal" sort of way. I prefer the 360, mainly because I know more people who own one, but I do play my PS3 whenever a worthy exclusive is released. The exclusives make the purchase worth it. As for the Wii, well, it gets ignored most of the time. But I pull it out from time to time, usually when a big Nintendo game is released for it.

My Favorite Games:

10. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
9. Gears of War
8. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (Theme Song FTW)
7. Final Fantasy IX
6. God of War
5. Super Mario Galaxy
4. Chrono Cross
3. Super Mario Bros. 3
2. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
1. Resident Evil 4

And there you have it. I love Destructoid and it's amazing community. I will probably never leave.

Good Morning Destructoid! I've rented some games, lets talk!
EternalDeathSlayer | 8:20 AM on 07.21.2009 34 comments

So it's like 9 AM here in lovable old New Jersey, and I've been struggling to get my children to eat their breakfast, as has been the tradition since we returned from our vacation in Walt Disney World a week ago. It's been a difficult experience, readjusting to this post-Disney life. It's hard not eating Mickey Mouse pancakes with the man himself for $35.99 plus tax every fucking day.

The lesson as always is do not have children.

Anyway, what's up Destructoid? Hopefully if you're a male, your cock isn't, cause that would be strange. I'm an ugly dude. As you might expect, my gaming has been down due to the previously mentioned vacation, but I did just recently receive a few games from reliable old GameFly. I love GameFly for it's ability to allow me to rent a lot of games that are worth playing but not worth buying. Games with great gameplay but extremely short length or severe lack of content.

Games like X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Remember, I just got back from vacation. I only received this game on Thursday and yet I had beaten it by Saturday, which is a short amount of time for me. I only play an hour a night on average nowadays, so this game is obviously not worth the $60 it would have cost to buy it. This is fine and even somewhat acceptable, considering the title is a licensed movie game. Besides this, the core game is extremely fun and satisfying. Perhaps a bit too fond of other games like God of War, but fun nonetheless.

I feel bad because I'm not technically supporting the title, but oh well. Perhaps next time the developer and publisher will spend more time crafting a game of value and substance, whatever the fuck that actually means. Good luck to them. If they hit the mark, I'll surely notice and then perhaps next time I'll buy their game. But for now I will mostly rent games like this. I've been burned too many times now by games like this, games you shell out $60 for only to be finished playing in a few days time.

Fuck that shit.

So how bout you Dtoid? Any of you feel the same way as I do about rentals? Some hardcore industry advocates try and say renting is just as bad as stealing, but I certainly don't feel that way. If I really and truly love a game I rent, I'll buy it. Of course people say that all the time, but do they really do it?

True Story: I once split the cost of a rental of Star Wars Battlefront with a friend when it was a new game, and I did in fact buy that game the next week due to that rental.

Oh snap.

PS: As for the word "games" in the title, ya know, the plural version of game, I also rented Ghostbusters but I haven't gotten around to playing it yet. I would have liked to talk about that game as well but who knows when I'll be able to blog again? 20 minutes of computer time is tough to come by when you live with my wife.

Fuck that bitch.

Is this post awesome? Vote it up!

I don't think renting games makes you a bad guy. If you're the sort to rent games you're likely the sort to buy a few too (as illustrated by you Star wars story).

In saying that though, i very rarely buy a game i rent. I already have a pretty good idea before a game comes out if i want to risk my dollars on it.

p.s. you bet your ass it's up.

TheToiletDuck: Agreed. I also usually have decided on a games true value based on preview info or even reviews and word of mouth.

I'll be renting quite a few games this year.

I hope you had a good time at Disney World ADS. It is like being in a completely different world huh, a really expensive world, filled with way to many people. Why did you go in the middle of summer? Wasn't it hot as hell there?

I'm sorry to hear you didn't like Wolverine. I really enjoyed it myself, but I got it on sale for only $30. I can understand why you wouldn't want to pay $60 for it. It doesn't really have any replay value, so once you beat it you will essentially put it down never to be played again, which sucks. It sucks to pay $60 for games like that.

I don't typically rent games. I usually just wait till a game is $20-$30 and then I buy it. For example, Bionic Commando recently dropped down to $20 and I bought it. I'm glad I didn't pay $60 for this, because it's not that good. RIght now, with the economy the way it is, you only have to wait a couple of months until a game drops in price.

I do Gamefly, but I will buy games as well. I support the industry, but I can't be expected to throw $60 at every experience I want to try out, plus GameFly at least gets a little money back to the devs.

SilverDragon: I did enjoy Wolverine, but it's a short game and to be honest I most likely would have gotten tired of it if it had been a 20 hour game.

But it was worth playing. Just not for 60 bucks.

Also, BC is 20 bucks? I'm so there. Just bought Sonic Unleashed for 20 bucks.

One of the rare cases of rental-to-purchase for me was Saints Row 2 from GameFly. On top of happening to get the game the day it cameout (a true rarity for GameFly) they offere it to me for at least $25 off of MSRP. For about $35 bucks (and you know, the fact that I'm buying into their service), I picked up a game I'm generally pretty stoked about having in my collection.

I'll still buy games at a pretty regular clip, but I definitely can't buy ALL of the ones I'm interested in.

I rented The Orange Box... and loved Portal so much I bought it. In Canada I can rent from Blockbuster (and pick up movies at the same time)... but if you decide to buy the game, it's still full retail cost. I honestly don't know why they don't have an option to rent the game, and if you decide to buy it, they knock the cost of the rental fee off... a sort of "try before you buy" thing. I would think that they would sell a lot more games!

@EDS: Gamespot dropped BC to $20 last week. Just know that your enjoyment of this game completely comes down to whether or not you get the swinging mechanic down. At first I didn't get it at all and it really ruined the game for me. After about 5 or 6 hours in I'm finally getting the hang of it though, and now I'm really enjoying the game.

When you said Disney World I instantly thought about that photo of you and the Micky Mouse ears. So yeah my cock is not up and it's not going to for about a week or so.

I never rent games because I too pretty much know what a game is like. But that's not the only reason. I'm a lazy bastard. I never return rented stuff in/on time. If I don't think a game is worth the full price I'll probably get it later. I have the same thoughts about Wolverine. Probably worth a rent but yeah, all the fines I have to pay for bringing it back late will make me regret it.

Also, fucking WoW. I feel for you man.

@Silverdragon
What's wrong with you man? First you called me Takeshit and now this?! Hahaha!

I do rent games, but they need to pass my ten day test if I want to buy them. If the game I have keeps my interest for more than ten days, it will more than likely be a buy. It gets a higher chance if it has online multiplayer as well, since I can play for weeks with that, depending on the game.

Besides, for me, $60 is not worth a game that is fun for the first few days, then you forget about it shortly after. But it's an experience I was to see firsthand, so I have to go rental. X:Men Origins: Wolverine is the best example of this. Fighting a giant sentinel is a blast to do, but it's not worth the paying that money for one of three or four cool things you can do in the game. Games need to have more substance than that if they want my money.

I think it's a misconception that using Gamefly somehow hurts the industry. It's a knee jerk response a lot of people have but it's not reality.

Case and point: Gamefly has to buy X number of titles every time a new game releases so there's money funneled into the industry right there. And that's not a singular action. They sell games and, therefore, need to replenish their stock. More money to the industry. Add to that the general wear and tear on rentals and the cretins who have no issues whatsoever with stealing and again, Gamefly is funneling money back into the industry. It's a constant process. If anything they're helping the industry and those of us who rent and/or buy from them are too.

The bonus, as you point out, is dodging the $60 bullet on games that don't live up to the price tag. All things considered, it's a winning situation for everyone. Gamefly gets business, the industry gets supported and the gamer saves some major bucks.

That's really strange. I've been playing Wolverine in the past few days (maybe 5 or so) 2 or more hours a day, and only yesterday I got half way of it. I mean, I'm in chapter three now. And damn, I usually take less time finishing a game, like Prince of Persia which took so little time that I've even got the Achievement Speed Demon ("Finish the game in under 12 hours").

oh shit. EDS sighting.

I completely agree with you on not shellin out 60 bucks for a game that will be beat a few days later. Which is why i'm also bein picky with the games I buy now. I do need to resign up with Gamefly so I can rent them instead of waiting for a price drop or just skipping on it entirely. I dunno whats up with these developers lately. Too much graphic catering and not enough towards the gameplay mechanics and replay value. It's really starting to show in all games and not just the half assed games.

I'm really glad you're blogging again dude. You should do it more often, if only to update us like this.

Yea I really liked Wolverine; probably twice as much as Ghostbusters, and renting isn't lame at all! Some of us just don't have $50-$60 to drop on a super short title that SHOULD be much less (MadWorld, lol).

Also, I live 10 minutes from Disney World :D! I hope you had fun, despite the absurd food prices! Epcot is my favorite park: what's yours?

@ Magnalon: I personally love The Magic Kingdom the most. Something classic and nostalgic about it, though maybe that's cause I've been there the most of all the parks.

Epcot is the least liked in my family, but personally I enjoy it. It's fun and educational. The Mission Space ride was fucking intense.

@Magnalon and EDS: I'm a huge Disney fan, as I probably go once a year. I have to say my favorite park is the Magical Kingdom. There is just to much history there, and to many rides that take me back to my childhood. How can you go wrong with space mountain, thunder mountain, and the tea cups?

I do really love Epcot though. I remember when Mission to Space first came out and it was a lot more intense. I recollect getting off of it everytime and feeling like I needed to throw up. I don't know why but I loved it. They have toned it down since a couply people died on it a few years back, but it's still an adrenaline rush.

At nights I typically go to MGM and just ride Tower of Terror and the Aerosmith Rockin' Rollercoaster over and over and over until the park closes. I love those two rides.

I started renting games a few months ago and have never looked back. It's great being able to play stuff without a) being pissed that the game you bought is shit and b) not losing a bunch of money when you want to get rid of said said shitty game. I mean, how many games do you play a year that you trult feel are worth $60 (or in my case £40)?

The biggest drawback is the lack of potential loss, which has made me far less tolerant. The minute I get a whiff of shit or the game starts pissing me off, it goes straight back in the mail. If I had bought the game, I would likely have made more of an effort to get through it and find something good to 'enjoy'.

After going to Disney World... I think anyone would be tight on the purse strings.

Renting isn't bad... But like ToiletDuck i usually have good sense of what's what.

Ghostbuster's is also PRETTY short... But all and all a more than unexpected GOOD time.

Also, Kids; you gotta love them!

Magic Kingdom is my 2nd favorite by far :D. I just really love Epcot's Soarin', Figment (nostalgic), the Countries (IE beer), Mission Space, and Jeremy Iron's soothing voice ride (aka the Epcot ball).

My wife and I are huge Disney fans as well, Silver. She works for them; it's the reason we live so close!

Disney World talk? Why wasn't I alerted? I have mixed feelings about Epcot. I'd probably enjoy it more if I could go on my own and just take my time exploring the World Showcase. That being said, Future World is fun, and Soarin' is awesome. There are things I love at all the parks, but my favorite has to be the Haunted Mansion (and has been since I was five years old). Did anyone ever go to Pleasure Island before they closed it down? The Adventurers Club was awesome, I'm bummed I only got to go once.

Also, video games. I rent them and don't feel bad. Sometimes I buy what I rent.

I regret not renting more games... I have piles of games and their stupid plastic boxes lying around, and I feel like a chump bringing them in to gamestop for like 25 cents in gamestop credit for them (sigh). So good on you.

By the way... Why did you buy Disneyland pancakes? You could have just taken a shuttle bus to I-Drive and got a 2.99 b-buffet at that place across from Wet N' Wild
