About Me

Hey guys, it's Dan or as everyone here knows me (including you, because you're looking at my blog), EternalDeathSlayer. Yeah, I jacked it from Grandma's Boy, eat me. Anyway, I love video games, but more importantly I also love to talk about video games, hence why I am here on Destructoid with you. I've got a wonderful little family of 2 kids and a wife and we all play games in some shape or form. My wife enjoys WoW (probably a bit too much) and playing Halo with either myself or her friends. My kids like kid stuff like Kinectimals or flash games on the PC. And me? I like almost everything. So long as a game is fun or has the ability to effect my feelings or emotions, I'm game.

Consoles:

Xbox 360

PS3

Wii

I play them all, but truthfully it's not in an "All Consoles are Equal" sort of way. I prefer the 360, mainly because I know more people who own one, but I do play my PS3 whenever a worthy exclusive is released. The exclusives make the purchase worth it. As for the Wii, well, it gets ignored most of the time. But I pull it out from time to time, usually when a big Nintendo game is released for it.

My Favorite Games:

10. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
9. Gears of War
8. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (Theme Song FTW)
7. Final Fantasy IX
6. God of War
5. Super Mario Galaxy
4. Chrono Cross
3. Super Mario Bros. 3
2. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
1. Resident Evil 4

And there you have it. I love Destructoid and it's amazing community. I will probably never leave.

1st Impressions of Final Fantasy WiiWare. It's addicting!
EternalDeathSlayer | 5:10 PM on 05.12.2008 12 comments

Having seen the story on the front page regarding WiiWare launching today (too lazy to link) , I decided to dust off my Wii and check out what was available. While I agree with Nick Chester that the platforming title LostWinds does look very interesting, I decided to let the fanboy inside get the best of me and settled on the most expensive game of the bunch, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles:My Life as a King.

Now, keep in mind, this game is more expensive than the majority of games you'll find on PSN or the XBLA. It cost 15 fucking dollars, and that's without considering the Nintendo Pay to Play bullshit you can download. Yes, the game has a warning before you download, which informs us that the game uses the pay to play service. While I haven't checked out the extra content, it seems that you won't need to spend any more actual cash to complete the game. That could change, but for now it seems safe.

As for the game, well, what can I say? It's clear Square Enix is really trying to crack the so-called "casual" market here, as you won't be doing a whole lot. There is absolutely no combat, which I expected but I was still somewhat disappointed when I confirmed this myself. What you'll be doing is building houses and other types of structures such as bakeries and weapon shops, to name a few. To build these, you'll need to gather resources. I can't think of what it's called off the top of my head, but you'll primarily be concerning yourself with just one thing: Some kind of magic resource needed to build everything. To get this stuff, you'll send out adventurers to explore areas, defeat any monsters or bosses, and then collect the resources and return home, usually in one day. You'll need to send the right adventurer for the job, which is based on their level and their stats. If there is only one job needed to be done,l you can either send adventurers out to explore and level up, or send them home. If you send them out, it costs 15 gil a day for them to adventure.

So what you have here is basically a very light and casual resource management game of sorts. You'll encounter moogles and other FF stuff as you walk around your little kingdom, so if you're a big Final Fantasy fan than there is definitely something here for you. There seems to be some sort of story underneath it all, but I haven't progressed far enough to know for sure. I'll be sure to let you guys know if anything changes in the future.

As it is, I find myself strangely attached to this game. I feel like I've found a new addiction, which is odd considering the game is so damn passive. You get the feeling you've done nothing when you turn it off, but it's fun, for some reason. I can't quite say it's worth 15 bucks, as I haven't spent enough time with it, but it seems like a decent value when you consider the game features GameCube quality visuals and some nice art direction. Not to mention heavy amounts of text, but I never really got tired of reading. Shame there's no demo.

PS: On a side note, I just wanted to point out the hassle it was downloading this game. It clocks in at around 250 blocks or so, which forced me to delete Star Fox 64 and Super Mario 64. Sure, you can download them again, but it's a pain in the ass to have to do all this bullshit. 512 MB is not enough room.

Also, I named my kingdom in the game FAIL TOWN.

I don't think I could get into this. I might try it, eventually, but I'd rather play Lost Winds first.

I really want to get a WiiWare game, but I don't know if I should just get this or wait until something better comes out. So thanks for the impressions!

@ Spartacus: It's probably best to wait for something else, as there should be a lot of cool stuff coming down the pipeline in the near future. At least, a lot of cool looking stuff.

Sounds cool! Would you recommend it to someone who liked crystal chronicles and animal crossing (from you're review it sort of seems like a cross between the two) but detests RTSs?

Really the extra dungeon pack is what, 3 bucks? Thats for 11 dungeons. I know, I know, mirco-transactions are bullshit. It would make the decision a lot easier if you could crawl the dungeons yourself, instead of sitting around waiting for your guys to return. I will still probably part with my money.

I hope if they dont come out with some extra storage, they will at least enable you to load off SD cards.

@ Scary: It's not like an RTS really. It's far more passive and relaxed. I think you'd like it. It has the art style of the previous FF CC games and is very casual leaning. You'd probably like this one.

It's one of those games where I keep getting the "Well, just one more turn" feeling so far. It's like, I get the resources to build something new, then I hear about something else I can build and have to work toward that. I'm also ridiculous about planning out my town, putting things in a residential district, and a shopping district, etc.

Yeah, I like these kinds of games. $15 well spent in my opinion.

I bought it. DEFINITELY money well spent. It appeals heavily to my personnel management jones.

And like Shawn Kelfonne, I'm spending all day today thinking about where I'm putting my next few buildings
