So I've continued playing
Uncharted:
Drakes Fortune for the past two days, and it's been a blast so far. I gave my first impressions in an earlier
blog and figured I might as well let you know how it's going at this point. Is the game still holding up? Or has it gotten boring like what happens to so many other games?
The answer to the second question is: No. I said in my last post about the game that I felt it validated the $600 I spent on my PS3, and I stand by that statement. It's still as beautiful looking as it was at the beginning, and I've gotten to a point where the whole look of the game seems to have changed. In contrast to the bright and sunny environments I talked about last time, the game has suddenly taken on a darker tone. It's certainly not looking like fun in the sun for our hero Nat Drake. But this is a good thing, as you never want things to get too repetitive.
The shootouts are still fun, but the developers must have known it could get boring so they threw in some nice variety to break up all the shooting. Of course, said variety does in include plenty of shooting, but it's handled differently so it feels fresh and fun.
At certain points you are forced to ride on both a Jet Ski and a Jeep. In the Jeep you shoot grenades and machine gun fire at enemies while your female reporter companion drives. It's simple and well done, and the feeling you get when you score a direct hit (which is somewhat easy) with a grenade is very satisfying. Cars and ATVs go boom, I smile.
Next up are the Jet Ski sections. In these you'll be controlling the Jet Ski as Drake and shooting the bad guys with Elena, the female reporter I keep mentioning. You get a nice grenade launcher of sorts the first time through, and it's your job to shoot the enemies and of course the (red) explosive barrels before they can kill your ass. The Jet Ski doesn't have the tightest controls and can in fact be a bit nausea inducing if you try and go too fast. But the shooting aspect is fun and easy and again, it feels good to watch a body go flying in the air when you blow a bitch up.
The second time on the Jet Ski you're only given a handgun. While it's obviously not a grenade launcher, it gets the job done, especially if you've got good aim. Headshots are the way to go here, as you'll also be dealing with an insane water current pushing you backwards and of course even more red barrels to explode on contact. The somewhat sloppy controls combined with the constant pushing of the water made me feel a bit sick at times, even moreso than the first Jet Ski section. But it's doable if you stick with it.
I feel like I'm closing in on the end of the game, and I've probably logged about 7 or 8 hours on the game so far. If it ends in another hour or 2 I'll definitely be satisfied with my purchase. I'll be writing a full review when I finish the game.
I love this game. It's Fucking Win.
BTW: Are you collecting the treasure all around you as well? Just looking around all the nooks and crannies of the game is fun. There's a bunch of shit to pirate my friend.
but tell me, don't you think the shooting gets reeaally boring after a while? i just don't get the same feeling i get shooting guys in, say, gears. because you play uncharted like gears, basically. so, when that mechanic didn't work as well, i got pretty bored. what do you think?
The shooting mechanic isn't Gears of War..what a surprise but it sure isn't broken. It's perfect for this game. I also love the AI in this game as they're really trying to bust a cap in your ass, they flank, try to flush you out with grenades, always trying to make you move. You could feasibly do the same shootout with different results according to your tactics.
Do I stay with the pistol and try for the headshot knowing I got 4 bullets left and 3 enemies still lurking? Or do I rush in and try to fight one mano a mano and take his shotgun if I survive and charge at the other two left? Sceneraios like this happen often and force you to be a better shot or work the enviornment for cover and positioning to get the drop on them for hand to hand acrobatics.
Boredom didn't set its head on me while playing it. As a matter of fact playing it thru on hard now trying to track all the loot I missed.
I bought this as soon as it came out, and while I was impressed with it - it just didn't hold my attention very long. I'm a pretty fickle gamer when it comes to single player.
I'm planning on giving it another shot once my DualShock 3 gets here. Hopefully next week.
so... rumble make games better?
It's UT3 that's been keeping my busy lately. For that I've been using a mouse.
Soo.. New controller! Let's play Uncharted again!
Is that so wrong?
