About Me
I am currently a review editor at Snackbar Games.

I play a lot of stuff and I'm too spread out, despite only having one console. I'm l33t at best and not bad at worst, unless it's Halo. Damn, I suck at that.

My real blog and my column.

Most of the time I'm playing WoW, TF 2, or Street Fighter IV.

PC version of Mass Effect: let the Fascism references begin
Etelmik | 4:00 PM on 05.06.2008 19 comments

PC piracy is blamed for a lot of things, especially poor sales on games. Including bad ones.

However, a game we know that won't be bad, Mass Effect, is going to go to the next level in anti-piracy: periodic CD Key checks.

Holy shit.

Anyone thinking Starforce?

This doesn't bother me at all.

Man up and buy the game you want so damn bad. If you want good games to continue to come out, support the developer and spend the $50 or whatever.

Pirating is just lazy. If you can't afford the game you want, get a job.

I don't understand what's so bad about this... My internet is on pretty much all the time and since I'm not stuck with cable I don't usually get sporadic internet shutdowns so the CD key checks aren't a big deal to me.

The same with Bioshock. I installed it on the one computer I own and played it to my hearts content. No problems ever with the SecurROM system they had in place.

As long as the software isn't making me stop the gameplay every ten minutes to manually re-type my CD key or seriously hindering game performance or something simialt to that, I don't see the big deal.

Most people who have a computer good enough to run recent games well will most likely have internet on said computers.

Wow this is harsh piracy protection but then again I suppose whatever works.

Surely, it's still just going to be written into the executable file and maybe a .dll so still very crackable?

That really sucks and I don't see how that's going to prevent piracy. Even if the game is stolen the player can just enter the cd key they got over and over. I don't want to support this stuff, but I already have it preordered and it looks like great fun.

Just looked at the article. You only have to validate your CD key twice. Once when you install and once ten days later. You don't have to do anything after that. It's not that bad.

Wait, if you don't play the game every ten days, it wont work?! I really hope I'm just and idiot and misread the article.

Because someone won't crack this within a week.

This does nothing, all it does is piss off the consumer and make them pirate the damn thing.

I'm all for piracy protection bit this isn't the way to do it.

Exactly, the only people this is going to frustrate are the regular consumers who are supporting the developer by buying the game.

Read the article. You only have to verify your CD key twice. Once when you install, and once ten days later. That's it. No more checks after that.

Securom takes an average of four days to crack. A pirate who has downloaded a copy of the game and cracked it has a completely hassle-free game experience, without any internet nannying or pestering, or delays in starting the game when he wants to play, and he certainly never has to worry about the game "ceasing to function".
The legit consumer purchases his copy of the game, then for the entire time he plays it has to deal with being constantly connected, the risk of false positives, servers going down, requests timing out, delays in booting the game when he just wants to play, and the ominous "ceasing to function".

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to realize on which size you want to be in that comparison.

@Eschatos:

No, YOU read the article. The follow came directly from Chris Priestly at BioWare in their message areas:

Q: Why does MEPC need to reactivate every 10 days?

A: MEPC needs to authenticate every 10 days to ensure that the CD key used for the game is valid. This is designed to reduce piracy and protect valid CD keys.

Did you notice that the reactivation is *EVERY 10 DAYS*? It's NOT a twice-and-done deal.

Ha, that's funny. "Protect valid CD keys". How exactly does this protect CD keys? If a legit CD key is stolen from a gamer by a trojan or something, and gets spread onto the internet, this scheme will ban it so that legit gamer won't be able to play his game. How is that protecting the CD key or the gamer who owns it exactly?

So much for me buying MEPC. I cannot out of conscience literally buy into this kind of crap.

I AM FED UP WITH BEING TREATED AS A POTENTIAL PIRATE INSTEAD OF A POTENTIAL CUSTOMER!!

Whether it's a damned key disc for the Commodore 64, a decoder wheel for the 256-color PC, or an on-line activation every 10 days -- enough is enough! If you f*ckers at EA want to treat me like a pirate, then - damn it - that's how I'm going to act! You assholes just guaranteed that if I play MEPC it won't be by giving BioWare/EA any profits.

@Etelmik:

Sorry if Jim stole your thunder by putting his own article on the front page. I sent an e-mail to the Destructoid Tips address about this before I saw that you posted about it. :/

You want to beat piracy? Value for money. If i meet anyone who pirated the Orange box, ill beat the shit out of them (or at least try). On the other hand, ill admit that i pirated CoD 4. I live in new zealand, and its not worth $100 (about $75 us). And it costs even more on Steam, ffs! If they ever drop the price, ill buy it for sure (im dying to play multiplayer) but until then, fuck Activision, and the vast majority of publishers who think they can screw us over.

If Mass Effect costs around $70(which most xbox ports cost, which is good) then ill have a look at it, since thats a fair price. If not, screw them. I may not be able to pirate it, but im still not going to buy it.
