After todays articles on ET:QW, I thought I'd weigh in with my opinion on the game so far.
From what I've played, (quite a bit), the beta is totally awesome. I truly believe that this game will be pure pwnsauce. Gameplay is great fun, and I really love the asymmetric vehicles, they're totally different for each side, even though the other equipment people can have is essentially the same. Basically, the GDF have a greater variety of vehicles, but the Strogg have more versatile ones. For example, the GDF has a scout car much like a hummer, and also an amphibious armored APC that's like a M2 Bradley, whereas the Strogg have an awesome armored car, that combines the two, the speed and maneuverability of the Hummer, and the armor of the Bradley, with the wonderful added feature of a powerful nitrous boost, that also activates a shield over the front of the vehicle that allows high speed ramming. The little details like this that happen to make the two factions seperate but equal, (in a good way), not crappy faction differences like Battlefield, where the most difference you'll likely find is a different skin, but more like the factions in Starcraft, each one has great differences, but still can pwn. The game's classes are fairly similar between the two factions, with only a few minor differences, like experience rewards, and secondary equipment.
The only annoying problem I've found is that when driving a vehicle at high speeds, there's lag, so turning can be a bitch, but that's not a big enough problem to make the game not fun. Other than that, I've had absolutely no problem running the game, other than a crash or two in the beginning, that the first patch fixed. My year old PC runs it on max settings easily, it takes around 30-45 seconds for a map to load, and then straight into gameplay, with no hitches.
The graphics are great, not amazing, but still better than most. Explosions can be pretty spectacular, especially from heavy artillery or air strikes, which can gut an entire base. My only gripes gameplay-wise, would be about teamwork. You must have it to succeed, and with all the newbies, there's very little of it. Very often, most of the players on a side will focus on whatever class has the coolest ability/weapon, usually the Constructor/Engineer and Soldier/Aggressor. Only in large games will you often find anyone playing a Medic/Technician, and Covert Ops/Infiltrators are also rare, which surprises me, I find them the most fun and usefull class. First off, they have the radar deployable, which is necessary for any good base defense. Second, it is incredibly fun to kill an enemy, hack their body to assume their identity, and go around knifing their teammates in the back. You'll probably never be caught, unless there are some veteran players, or someone sees you knife a buddy.
In conclusion, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, is and is going to be an awesome game. I bet it will be one of the best, if not the best multiplayer FPSs this year. Consider this an advance review.
By the way, this is my first real blog post ever, so I'd appreciate advice and suggestions, I'd love to continue writing posts like this.
