Multiple characters would surprise me simply due to the fact that it would (could) ruin the post-storyline open world stuff. I mean, what are they going to do, have you choose whom you'd like to play every time you boot the game after the campaign is over?
Of course, they could always just kill off all the playable characters but one...

I've been seeing quite a few GTA5 related articles around the net and the conses seems to be Tommy Vercetti 40 years after Vice City. I'd be extremely happy if this was the case and would make me love Rockstar for life. Also if CJ played a role in the story (considering his house was shown in the trailer) alongside Vercetti, that would make me a happy camper.
Multiple characters worked pretty well in Yakuza 4. Each of the 4 characters was part of a larger story and in the end, after a bunch of crazy plot-twists, it all made sense, or at least it made everybody get together and brawl it out on top of a skyscraper.

I wouldn't put it past them.

I hope we see some familiar faces from the series. Be funny if you saw or heard Brucie in a commercial or hear a new song by Mad Dog all of these years later
I prefer this, rather than what they pulled in Red Dead Redemption, being forced to go from playing as some badass, to playing as some whiny asshole.
