I used to have one of the mortal kombat games for my dreamcast (actually I still have both) and I remember mashing buttons with a friend... but not knowing what I was doing at all! I know the amount of actual skill in these games, and have been tempted a few times to give it a try, but I think that having yet another genre of games to play might tip me from "gamer" into "obsessive compulsive with no life gamer".
Have fun though! (and at least I can enjoy the genre vicariously through blogs like this!) :)

@Elsa
Rest assured, I have no idea the level of skill necessary to be proficient at a fighter, but that is not gonna stop me from trying.
@Occam
That picture is great.
@AlphaDeus
I don't expect to be good for a long while, but god damn it if I'm not stubborn and I will get better.
@Jawshoeuh
It is an inevitability I have already accepted. Bring it.

I picked up the SFIV TE stick when it went on sale for $99 and it was pretty much the best gaming purchase I've ever made. So much so that I ordered the sexy new black fightstick this week so that I could get some raging offline battles going at my house.
I can't vouch for the quality of other sticks, as the Mad Catz TE is the first one I've ever used, but holy shit does it make playing Street Fighter a thousand times more fun.

Well, here's a tip...
Playing online sucks. Many will hem and haw... but the fact of the matter is the local thrill is how you get good. Having said that, feel free to add me, sheppy, on PSN and I can try to give some tips.
Second, find someone locally who's about your same skill level and do "drills" against each other. Aka, one player does straight jabs, you learn to time focus counters, etc.

Oh, Enkido, no, you forgot the most important part of fighting games: if you never play, you're undefeated.
I'm looking at fighters more and more these days. I've never got into the gameplay, but I salivate over the intricacies at play. With an Armstrong doppleganger at hand, maybe it's time I threw my toque into the ring.

I just have to add that you drawing parallels between Dudley and Armstrong has made me realize how badly there needs to be a Fullmetal Alchemist fighting game.
The more I think about it, the more I want to hit the lottery so I can commission Capcom to make such a game. Imagine Armstrong, Scar, Mustang, Izumi, the homunculi, Alphonse, Ed, etc. in the SFIV or TvC engine. OMG I'm gonna need some tissues..

@Gore on the floor
Thanks for the tip on the fight stick, seeing as you have one and I don't, I figure that makes you more qualified to recommend one. Also, a Fullmetal Alchemist fighter is something I have thought about as well. It would have to include Kimbly, Hughes, and the chimeras as well.
@Sheppy
That makes a lot of sense. I should be able to find someone else with as little experience as myself.
@Beyamor
I can't help it, I'm a glutton for punishment. I must say I am enjoying it though. I would someday like to be able to pull of some of the combos in the videos on youtube but that may be a while.

According to beyamor I'm an undefeated champion in the SSFIV. I think I'll stay retired. Enjoy the game Enkido. It'll take many moons to accomplish my champions standing so good luck......it takes alot of disipline not to put it in your console.
@Gore, Enkido
There is a FMA fighting game. It's called FMA - Dream Carnival. It's pretty cheap, too, but you'll have to make your PS2 import friendly... which isn't that hard, either.

@ the7k
That game doesn't look quite as good as the one in my head does, but I think I still need to own it. Thanks for the heads-up.

There's a lot to be said about picking up a Street Fighter title so late in one's own videogame career, on one hand I'm glad that "you've taken your first steps into a larger world," but on the other hand I am sad that you've taken this long to get here. Regardless, welcome!

The only thing I can guarantee is this: you will make your roomates pay in blood if you start learning something from me.

"you will make your roomates pay in blood if you start learning something from me."
Sounds like fun.
