It's funny, but I started writing this blog thinking that creating a sexy female character game seems easy... giant boobs and partial nudity seems to please most men (gauging by the blogs on characters like Bayonetta), however I was specifically thinking about male characters. This just seems more difficult. In the past we've had our pretty boys:
... a big no for any guy with longer hair than me, or that looks prettier than me, or that looks like he's 15 We' ve also had those "over the top" manly men with gargantuan muscles like most any guy created by Epic, and of course Kratos, Matt Hazard and Duke Nukem:
... another big no for any guy that looks like he uses steroids and probably has a teenie weenie. Recently though, we're starting to see some sexy guys in video games. These are kind of average guys with realistic body types. They are "manly" men consistent with western concepts of attractive. They are also older, more mature men. They are men like:
Chris Redfield... a bit young, but yummy.
Altair... mostly hidden adding a bit of mystery, but a strong manly face.
Nathan Drake... Physically he's an average guy... a guy you might actually want to take home to meet the parents
Sam Fisher.... mmmmmm.... love that rough look and that he's been married. There something very sexy about a guy who knows commitment and had a daughter.
... my personal favorite - Old Snake. Yeah, I'm biased because my husband is over 50 and has a gray mustache - but for an old guy, Snake still has buns of steel! Now of course I have my own tastes in what is "sexy" and I'm sure other ladies will have different tastes... but I do think that developers are getting closer in creating some attractive male characters - but who do you think is sexy? Why do you think they are sexy? What would be your ideal sexy game character? If you like women, do you like the current trend in unrealistic females with massive boobs, tiny waists, long legs and practically no clothes? Many women seem to find "realistic" males more attractive - would men find a more realistically rendered female more attractive, more sexy? Men are very visual in their sexual response (which accounts for the huge sale of women's lingerie), while I think that women tend to be more emotional in their sexual response. I think this makes it more difficult to create a sexy male character because you have to give him an appealing character and history. Sam Fisher being married makes him a more attractive character to me. What about the men on this site - is there some type of personality, background, history that makes a female character more appealing? ... and I'd love to see this as a monthly musing at some future point if they are looking for ideas. I think it's good for developers to get a better idea of what contributes to creating an "attractive" video game character. So my own qualifications for a "sexy" video game character are roughly the following: * a rough and tumble manly look (like Sam) that is realistic * mature... in that vague age range between 35 and 50 * he's been in a committed relationship, either married or has been married (because commitment is sexy, being a male slut isn't sexy) * he's had kids (cause being a dad is sexy) * a sense of humour! (yes, those Battlefield Bad Company guys were smokin hot sexy) * he has a reason to kill (and isn't just blindly killing so called "bad guys") * he has a nice butt! (yeah, I'm a a butt-gal. A nice tight set of buns you could bounce a quarter off of is sexy!) What's your list?

Really, though, I found my created character in Mass Effect alluring for the following reasons:
Jennifer Hale's voice
Bright green eyes, auburn hair
Holy crap, a personality!
Spent a lot of time with that game
I don't know if it's really a matter of thinking she was "hot" as much as just liking the character, and having a female character that didn't feel like a "female character," but instead just felt like a person that happened to be female.
Mitsuru is sexy :P
Also, what Kuaza said about Mass Effect.
Other than that I want someone likeble who I don't mind following around for an entire game. No incessant wining or "woe is me" moments. I want a guy who can take action, admit his mistakes and keep going. Bonus if he's good with a sword, I have no idea why, but I find that sexy too. Must be something to do with the dexterity. Rrrrrrr.
I have a 360 Avatar, so that makes me vaguely eligible, right?
I'd do Henry Townshend from Silent Hill 4. Just cos he's a shirt wearer. All shirt wearers are sexy. Unless they tuck it into their trousers...then they're just middle aged dads and peadophiles.
-- capable and independent but not to the point of being totally closed off
-- intelligent, clever, or crafty
-- sense of humor
-- reminds me of wifey
Examples : Alyx Vance, Zoey, Jade, Liara
Fun post! They need to come up with an Buns of Solid Snake exercise video.
@Aurain... I had to look up Mitsuru and at least she wears clothes! (She still has the skinny with big boobs thing going on though)
@Suitcoatavenger... Mike Haggar falls into that 'teeny weenie" category! :)
@Zodiac... exactly!! There really is something inherently sexy about a man interacting with children (or even knowing that he has in the past in the context of a game). I also agree that personality is a factor - whining and "woe is me" is most definitely a turn off!
@VampireChrist... yep!
Stevil, On Henry, a good choice - but for me he always seemed a bit "emo" looking for some reason! LOL
I just think that with larger games, developers can incorporate more in the way of personality and background into their characters. I also think that men might actually be more demanding than just a pretty face and huge boobs in terms of what makes a female character sexy. More realistic female avatars (Alyx Vance being an example) can be just as sexually appealing as outrageous stereotypes of the female form such as Bayonetta.
... Walkyourpath... just saw your comment, and again, my point about men wanting more from their female characters and possibly that a vague sense of realism might actually work!
(and yeah, they definitely need that workout video!... and Kojima could probably make it fun, odd, yet actually work!)
I can't believe I forgot Liara and Zoey.
Also, the sexiest female game character out there is a tie between Alyx Vance and Samus Aran.
As for men, I've always thought FFXII was the place to be for sexyness. Between Basch and Balthier, I think any woman or gay man would be covered. Those two just exude sexyness IMO. Just ignore Vann if you can, I know he's a total turnoff.
So, off the top of my head I can think of Vice, Mature, and Yuri (from King of Fighters), Alyx Vance (Half Life series), Jade (Beyond Good and Evil), and C. Viper from Street Fighter 4.
And as an aside to the guys: I got a lot of attention from the single moms (and the women there in general) when I attended my nephew's little league games. Holding my two year old niece while rooting for my nephew made me seem more approachable I guess. I can't wait for the season to start again :D
Josh Carter - Another Foxy Shirt Wearer
Actually he was a pretty likable character in Obscure. Probably the only one! But he also proves my 'shirt wearing = sexy' point. Too bad they killed him off before the sequel began. The gits.
-Doesn't talk
This is like the golden age of female characters for me.
@arkhon... not annoying is also a good quality!
@wanderingpixel... I actually did think of Gordon Freeman, and he almost made my list, but he really didn't have a strong personality in the games - he seemed a bit dour for some reason.
@Daedhead... that's 2 votes for redheads! On Basch, he's kinda got that long haired Fabio thing going on, Balthier is better, but still has an effeminite look that doesn't personally appeal.
@Primo... for some reason anime characters always seem so young to me. That being said, I'm just not into anime games and this was one of the reasons I posted the blog - to see the diversity of what people consider to be sexy.
LOL@casualweaponry... and now guys will be running around looking to borrow young nieces or nephews! :)
Regarding battle gear... I think that this is one thing that has always bothered me. A lot of the female characters are not only attired in "lack of clothing" but often times the clothing is totally impractical within the context of the game.
@Stevil... yeah, shirt wearing is sexy if it has rolled up sleeves and a casual look. If they've got suspenders and buttoned up to the neck - not for me! :)
DeathoftheDead... glad a guy mentioned Meryl! (and that's the third redhead to be mentioned!)
LMAO Shipero!!
Anthopologically what you're saying is quite correct: Healthy, fit, full-breasted women are more attractive to men as these women would traditionally provide a greater chance of survival through childbirth. The qualities in men that you refer to as attractive such as maturity, sense of humour and child-raising skills naturally point toward good father figures.
I hope you're not having tea because I'm about to let you know the anthropology through why women like muscular bums on men. A more muscular rear means that a man would potentially offer a more powerful pelvic thrust and therefore offer a greater possibility of impregnation through intercourse.
You've got some decent taste in manly types, miss missy.
wat
-Chun Li, If there's one thing I'm a sucker for, its curvy hips and strong stems. Doesn't hurt that despite being "the strongest woman in the world" she'll still taunt you with a cheery smile.
-Fran from FF12, voices are a big deal for me. Fran's voice melts me.
-the BarKeep from Twilight Princess, one of the sexiest characters in any game. For a Nintendo character, she radiates a surprising level of confident sexuality
-Momohime from Muramasa, delicate and classy yet also bad ass! There's something very sexy about being more formidable than you appear to be.
-Auron from FFX, aside from being a bit grim (on many levels), he's got a tough voice and comforting resolve
-Old Snake, you can't play behind an avatar for 12 hours and not appreciate the buns on that dude. Its true.
-Dingo Egret from ZOE2, gruff, tough, strapped into a machine and a skilled pilot. Sweet Skillz are sexy.
-Largo from Valkyria Chronicles, despite fitting the gruff quota and being pretty buff, he's a total nerd. Have you heard that dude talk about vegetables? HAWT!
-Wrex, don't judge me.
If Maria Kirilenko was in a recent tennis game I would have included her. Then again Maria Sharapova is in Virtua Tennis. They may not be "true" video game characters, but this is my comment and I will include them if I want!! :P
The problem with most female video game characters is that very few have been fleshed out to be anything other than eye candy....and I mean outside of RPGs which I don't play too much of. Fun-loving, humourous, athletic women are what I like. Now that I think of it, Elena Fisher of Uncharted fits the bill *prays for girl-on-girl action with the Aussie in Uncharted 2*
^_^
Claire Redfield takes the cake in my book. Pretty, tough, and caring to boot.
Auron is goddamn sexy. If I was a girl I would know what to do.
@takeshi... honestly... just not seeing the sex appeal there! (and what's with the napoleon arm pose?)
@Mentok... yeah Dante was a possibility, but young for my own tastes (and again, there was something a bit effeminite about him)
@Father chesz... yeah, Sentry is sexy. :)
(and glad to see Claire mentioned!!)
LOL Celica! ... and yeah, Elena seems more "realistic".
Tubatic... a couple I'm not familiar with, though had to look up Wrex - ummmm... no bestiality comments forthcoming here!
On the female characters you find attractive, I like the descriptor "radiates confident sexuality"... also "delicate and classy, yet also a bad ass". Those are qualities I like hearing!
Jesus... average meaning he's well... no bulging biceps, kind of a droopy ass for a guy... just well.. average.
Daedhead... well dressed... interesting that you mention that quality. I can't offhand think of a "James Bond" male character (excepting of course James Bond)... and most other well dressed guys can come across as girly when "well dressed" is fancy stuff with guy cleavage. On the penis thing.... sadly, most male characters appear to be eunichs! (or else it's really cold out)
@captainbus... excellent comment!!! Yes, you've nailed a lot of the underlying science behind "sexy". :)
Thanks for the comments... I find it an interesting topic to see what others define as "sexy".
I know a lot of people didn't like Faith from Mirror's Edge, but I like the fact that she clearly wasn't designed to give guys a boner, because she's flat-chested and the game is in first-person the whole time. I wish there were more female characters like that, just to piss off gamers who only care about boob size.
And Sexy female game characters?
Like Celica said.
Elena Fischer from Uncharted: Drakes Fortune.
I like her basically for the same reasons you like Nathan.
Julia Chang from Tekken
It does help that my ex-girlfriend now best friend looks like her and her name is Julia as well.
But my favorite is still:
Lulu from Final Fantasy X
I couldn't believe she got pregnant from Wakka in FFX-2. Really, REALLY? Damn. That game is wrong in so many ways.
Certainly not Yuna. She's kind of cute but not sexy.
Great blog btw. I absolutely loved it.
@Dexter... yeah, Chris is a little on the muscled side... but at least somewhat proportionally realistic.
@Takeshi... I don't know a lot of the RPG/anime characters, but Luna does seem to evoke a serene form of power and her sexuality isn't overt and in your face, but seems more subtle. Nice choice (as are your other female choices... I seem to agree better with your choice in women than your choice in men! LOL!)
@Arkhon, mentioning Faith is interesting... she seemed sexy in an "athletic" way... more trendy more modern!
Hey garison! Thought you might approve! :)
(though your insight on "sexy" game characters would also be appreciated! who do you think is an attractive character?)
As for male picks...let's see. Maybe Nathan Drake? And pretty much anyone from the Ace Attorney games. What a bunch of sexy freaks.
Forgive his hat. His daughter made it for him.
Also, awesome post.
