About
I'm 50 years old, I'm female, I'm happily married, I'm retired from the work force... and I spend way too much time gaming. I enjoy long walks on the beach, with a gun, sometimes with my husband - shooting n00bs.
I not only like to shoot people, I also enjoy cooking and crafting. Mostly I make my own armor in games like Skyrim and cook my own potions after a busy day of hacking and slashing my way through various critters, guards and bandits in most any WRPG game.

If you're into a threesome or foursome with a mature couple, then come join us - only be sure to bring a med kit. We're old, sometimes we fall down and can't get back up without some help!

While playing MAG last week, I took note of two gamertags... ugotkilledbyachick and agirlkilledu. Their gamertags irritated me. In fact, "irritated" is probably too mild a word as I think I said something to the effect of "I just got killed by "ugotkilledbyachick" - I f'ing hate stupid gamertags like that... sounds like some 13 year old frag girl wannabe". Later in the game I took actual pleasure in sniping her in the forehead.
Later on, I thought over that incident and thought about how hypocritical I was. I'm the one that often says that women shouldn't be afraid to be visible in gaming. Women are there in the games, but so often are invisible because they use gender neutral nicks and often don't use a mic. If men realized how many women are there, gaming alongside of them, we would cease to be as much of a novelty. As the novelty aspect disappears, so too does much of the harassment. So I guess it was somewhat hypocritical to be irritated by gamertags of very obvious female players who actually used their mics (I could hear them on prox chat).

Being hypocritical doesn't sit well and those nicks still irritate the shit out of me, so rationalization has begun to set in. It's not the "chick" or "girl" parts of the gamertags that bother me... I've seen "gungirl" and "chickwithagun" and neither of those names make me feel bile raise in the back of my throat. It's not the "killedu" part of the nick... "grandmakilledu" is an awesome nick (and an awesome lady). "killedbyElmerFudd" was a nick that actually made me laugh (great visual there!), so it's also not the "killedby" part of the nick. I'm not even sure why those nicks bother me until I remember "blakguykilledu" and realized that this gamertag irritated me too. I think it might be the inherent racism or sexism combined with the arrogance of assuming the kill that bothers me.

The arrogance is the easy part... "gonnateabagzu" is irritating simply because it assumes superiority, like "elitesniperz" and all those gamertags with "pro" anywhere in them. That kind of arrogance is usually annoying, especially when they actually are good and keep killing you! (though it should be noted that not all pro and elite gamertags are bad... "protargetdummy" did make me giggle!) The sexism/racism is more difficult. GayParade was the nick of a guy in the Warhawk tourney and he was awesome.. but a gamertag like "gayguy" has a generic quality that I do find irritating, like somehow he's the only gay gamer out there or represents all gay gamers or something. I think that's part of my annoyance with those two ladies... "ugotkilledbyachick" and "agirlkilledu" have a generic quality that implies sexism combined with the arrogance. Those nicks just seem juvenile and aimed at irritating people, but I guess that's part of what gaming is about. If a gamertag is irritating, then you do notice it, remember it.... and within the game you may even be more inclined to skip the easy kill and instead shoot that irritating gamer tag right in the ass while they're busy teabagging one of your teammates. In the end, I guess it's even more juvenile to be irritated by gamertags like these. Getting killed by "ugotkilledbyachick" shouldn't really be any more annoying than getting killed by "Elsa" or "nobody" or "plonkplonk". Maybe I just have to grow up a bit.

Though some gamertags do require banning and I've only once ever reported a gamer to Sony... and that was a guy named "aidsisgodsvengence", because that gamertag was simply wrong on any level.

Still, I do love noticing interesting gamertags... though it's interesting the opinions I formed based on nothing more than words...

Anything with "weed", "grass", "dope" or "stoner" in the tag:
They think "weed is cool, and therefore so am I". I think "aw crap, another stoner who plays his music too loud and won't shut up about how stoned he is... at least he's easy to kill because he's just standing there like a tool".

Anything with "sniper" or "sniperz" in the tag:
They're probably thinking "I'm that cool lone wolf guy". I'm thinking "crap, another idiot that's going to sit at the spawn and snipe and not bother taking the objective".

Anything with urMom or urSister in it... usually of the "doinurmom" type tags:
Yeah, "doingurmom" was in the same game as the aforementioned ladies.... and while he's probably thinking "I'm such a clever troll", I'm thinking "your doing my 70 year old mom??". The "doingyoursister" tag is even funnier to me, because my sister is bossy. She's much, much, much bossier than I am... and any guy doing her is likely being told he's doing it wrong and how to do it properly. I laugh to myself because I figure this guy is pretty brave... and stupid!

Anything with random letters and numbers that make no sense:
They think ... no wait, I don't think they were thinking, because when a gamer tag isn't pronounceable, then they invariably get called "hey Dickhead".

There are great gamer tags though... I do love ones that make me laugh. I've been killed by "atoiletseat", "nobody", "daffyduck", "27ninjas" and other nicks that did make me pause and chuckle for a moment. To those that pick annoying gamertags... ok, you win. I was annoyed. In future, I guess the only way for me to win the game is to not get annoyed and to ignore the gamertag.

... dammit, that's hard though... so many annoying people out there. Maybe I'll just give up and change my gamertag to "StonedEliteGrlSniperKilledUwhileDoinUrDaddy".

Oh I just loooove bad gamertags. Every time I see a Juggalo_420 or XxCrimsonFyrexX I get a little giddy. To know that somewhere out there is a person that has accepted that title in an aspect of their life, no matter how big or small, well it makes my Tiny Dancer heart swell with joy.
Another fantastic blog from Elsa. I love reading these because they give me perspective into the online gaming world. I like how your blog went from irritation at names to discussing funny things about those names. That's pretty much how alot of tiny irritants in life are, you can let them get to you, but many times it's better to laugh at them.
If you did change your gamertag to "StonedEliteGrlSniperKilledUwhileDoinUrDaddy", I would have to put you on the list of best names ever. Nothing compares to the awesomeness of too many things good or bad combined.

Things like "X x SupaSt0n3d x X" or " IamF8mal8" just always look dumb and sound dumb to me. Why bring attention to something they know is gonna get them hated on? Oh, I see. It is because they need attention like a plant needs sunlight or a vampire needs blood. A joke in a tag is good, a sloppy joke is bad, offensive stuff is obviously offensive and really quite pathetic. I find that the simpler it is, the better.

My tag being Justinman504 says nothing to insult anything or anyone. My first name, my gender, some obligatory numbers that mean something only to me. It was actually a clone of a friend's gamertag and I was just trying to get the process over quickly. I would have changed it to something else a long time ago but that costs money and I didn't realize that at the time. I don't like paying for name changes much so I am stuck with the name until I cave and buy a new one anyways :/. At least I am not the next xX Shadowking of D84th Xx.
My favourite is anything with Kush in it. You know they love their sweet green when they bust out the Kush in their GT. That stoner guy actually looks just like a friend of mine. He was never a stoner but by how he looked with the dreds it surprised me when he cleaned up and went to go work for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

I think my favourite from recent memory was getting killed in Gears 3 by "IKEA FURNITURE". I'm so glad someone from Ikea shares the ssme passion for Gears 3 as I do while reppin' their workplace. Kudos.
Is that Andy's mom In that last pic?
/harharhar

Jokez aside, I agree. I don't really think being a woman that plays games needs to be enforced. We get it, don't force it down our throats.

I blame the guys.
"Maybe I'll just give up and change my gamertag to "StonedEliteGrlSniperKilledUwhileDoinUrDaddy"

Oh come on, it's a perfect tag! :)

Sometimes I have more fun checking out tags than actually playing the game. It is annoying as hell when you keep getting killed by someone with a tag like "elitesniperz", and I have a bad tendency to go hunting them down just to prove a point. So yeah, I guess if they've chosen the tag to irritate people then it sure works on me.

A tag like "ugotkilledbyachick" is annoying to me because it's shouting out "Hey, I'm special because I'm a girl", and I don't want to see female players treated special, just equal. I don't want someone to represent my gender, just my team for a win.

It's funny that the only time I get called out on my tag (SNAFU2go) is when I start talking over the mic. I'll usually have one person call me out or send a message asking me if I even know what it means. I've even had younger players asking me if it means something sexual.

My favorite tag so far - "ImYourHuckleberry". He/she usually topped the list in points, so it was well earned.
Talking about stupid gamertags reminded me of my all-time favourite: "Campy McNeverMove".

Completely agree with your thoughts on all of the 'EliteSnipaKilla72344335"s out there. One thing that's always surprising to me is how the dumbest names always have 3-5 digit numbers in them, like there were 25,987 other people clamoring to be 'Poopybum25988".

Isn't that true? I understand it can be hard sometimes to pick a unique tag, given how many there are out there, but why so many numbers?
@Karutomaru... in online gaming, I'd just shorten your name to "Karu"... but I'm referring to 789R3PSSM66YZ... and the like.

@Occams.. I LOVE your nick.. but yeah, some of them you have to wonder "what were they thinking?"!

@Scissors... online gaming is fun... but yeah, you have to keep a sense of humour or the little irritants (especially if the keep killing you) can grow into huge annoyances!

@Glitch;... LOL! Yeah, I guess if there is enough bad in a name it becomes good! I too tend to prefer simple, though I also love humourous names.

@gareth... ok, I'm showing my age... but I had no idea "kush" was a weed reference (and I live in BC!) Oh.... and getting killed by Ikea Furniture is awesome!!!

@Epic... somehow I always picture Andy's mom in a pink bathrobe... but with curlers in her hair! Again, I like when women show their gender in online gaming, but for some reason those gamertags I just found to be incredibly annoying. I'm not even sure if I've figured out why I find them annoying. :(

@Jaded... you may have pegged why I found those nicks annoying... though in some ways, men have lots of annoying tags, so I guess women being equal, they're allowed to as well! SNAFU2go is an AWESOME tag!

@possumwranger.... "CampyMcNeverMove" is another fun tag... yeah, sometimes lots of bad definitely equals funny good! Never noticed the 3-5 digit rule... but now that you mention it... so true!!

Beauty.
I'm sorry, but I love PlonkPlonk so much I'm changing my Dtoid name to it, and my Steam name.
@PK... plonkplonk is already taken... one of our very own Dtoiders uses it as his alt and yes it does make me smile! :)

Kinda like Smurfee McGee... who I kept running over in Starhawk last night... and everytime I squished him under my wheels I had an image of a blue leprochan getting flattened for some reason. I even felt a little guilty! LOL!
Funny, honest, humble, introspective...

Then came that venom about your sister. That- THAT was just a little fucked up, and you know it, young lady. Oh I don't want to hear any "She'd laugh too, and agree!" or, "It's nothing I wouldn't say to her face." Bullshit. I've got a difficult sister too, but damn, Elsa. Damn. Call her up today and tell her something nice. If these kids around here don't have your good example, we may as well close the zoo. :)

Great blog!
My first handle in Counterstrike was UncleBetsyShotU.

Because no one knows how to feel about getting shot by Uncle Betsy.
You have to change your nick to that last name you mentioned, your kd ratio would skyrocket as juvenile gamers would go amazing lengths to kill you. I'm loving the visuals you are getting , it's always fun because they will be different for everyone because they are shaped by our experiences. Man those superiority nicknames sure are annoying! Great blog Elsa!
Oohh! I just remembered one of the best stupid nick moments! When you lose your temper and call your killer something silly like freaking propeller face. Only to realize that his nick actually is propeller face , get out of my head!ddddd
As a partaker in all things related to marijuana, one would expect me to have something to say about the stereotypes lodged against people who incorporate their recreational use into their gamertag/online ID/whatever.

Unfortunately, almost everyone I've ever encountered online who has a blatant reference to smoking pot in their name has been an absolute moron, and generally gives those of us who smoke and DON'T act like idiots bad names by conforming to those stereotypes. DAMN THEM.

That said, I'm not an easy kill while high. But that's because I'm not as cool as Xx420THUG4LIFExX. Maybe someday.
@DynamoJoe... yeah, I'll admit that my sister and I sometimes don't get along and that was a little brutal... but it's somewhat true and gamertags of the "bangingUrSister" type do make me laugh for that reason. Still... I should be nicer. Maybe. :)

@Nihil... like I said, exceptions! "unclebetsy" is indeed confusing enough to bring a smile to my face.

@Kaggen... Yeah, the visuals will be totally different for everybody - shaped by both experiences and age (for example me not getting the "kush" references). Good note too that some people will purposefully hunt down an annoying name... I know I did that with Ugotkilledbyachick... I even switched to my sniper loadout to make her easier to find. I'm not a good person! LOL!
(and propellerface! LOL!)

@shotgun... yeah, it just seems that those that use the reference nicks seem to feel the need to talk about how stoned they are... which totally negates any "cool" aspect they might have acquired! :)
Bad nicks are indeed funny. Like Occams said, someone chose this to represent him and is okay with a nick I for one find ridiculous. Nicks with numbers in them always make me wonder about the users creativity and intent.

After sporting several other nicks (Bandicoot, Anubis, Yee) I found the one for me. Now I go by MortyMnemonic, which represents me quite well. An alliteration, a connotation of death, a reference to cyberpunk and I got a good memory.

Also, how did you report a nick? I tried that, as well, but nothing came of it although the guy was using obvious nationalsocialist insignia in his nick "arisches88" (aryan88; 88 standing for hail hitler). I can see on my blocklist that it's still there.
@Elsa
I totally agree. It's my opinion that you should never have to tell someone how stoned you are, because if it's relevant to them they're likely on that level already, and if they're not, it's probably not relevant to them. I'd say a good portion of it is dumb kids thinking their cool because they're doing something illegal and generally frowned upon, which is never a basis for which to decide to do something, but kids are kids so who knows lol.
I reported the user through PSN... there is a section on the website where you can report a player and "offensive user name" is one of the reporting reasons. They keep changing the website, so I"m not sure how to report someone now, and I'm not sure how to report an Xbox gamertag. :(

At the time I reported him I was also a moderator on Sony's Gamer Advisory Panel, so I also spoke with some contacts there... which probably helped and expedited the matter! :)
@Elsa

I cry tonight in sadness...
I thought I'd commented on this already, but I guess not... weird. Anyway, I love reading other people's gamertags. There are always a lot of good one in TF2. One of my favorites was "Walking Talking Stephen Hawking", who was actually playing in the Dtoid server once.
I got defeated in Virtua Fighter by the "WorstPlayerEver" (or something akin to that) during the Extra-Life Marathon. It was degrading, especially since his schtick was using auto buttons to punch or kick continuously the whole match.

I don't really ever get upset about losses in online (as that's not why I play), but that one kinda hurt my pride.
Lol, glad to see plonkplonk getting namedropped!

I also share a love of good/bad usernames. Sometimes, because I'm boring, I like to browse through the list of people I've played with recently. Gotten some good laughs from that!

Also, I don't think getting annoyed by the fact that someone is sporting the name "Ugotkilledbyagirl" is hypocritical of you. You're not annoyed by the fact that you got killed by a girl but rather by the implication in the name that being killed by a girl is especially bad - worse than being killed by just anybody (by which I mean a fellow, as they are the only people who play games). And why is being killed by a girl-comma-of-all-things so terrible if not because girls are bad at videogames! To be killed by a girl-comma-of-all-things is demeaning!

At least, this is the connotation behind the username. And it's bullshit. You're right to be annoyed by it.
The funny thing about gamer tags are they divided into a few types. Some are just people names, some are character names, some must be nicknames, but you do see some of the type you describe. Long windily you could call them the "I'm gonne name a 'type' of person I assume others won't like and they I'm gonna taunt you with it!" or the boasting type.

That I think is weird type because it goes about telling people about you by ASSSUMING people won't like you and then being belligerent about it. It is the difference between saying, "I’m Librarian." and saying "I’m a Librarian you twit", the first one states a fact and the other person has to interpret. The second one assume a librarian is worthless and props it up poorly. There is obviously a different psychology behind the tag "GrlGamer" and "GrlGameKilledU" choose as a name even without the fact that in either case the name pops up. If in a game "GrlGamer" shoots me doesn't the same point get across as "GrlGamerKilledU" killed me - the same but the second one is redundant.

Any time people write something boastful, I can't help but think "over compensations” for something in their life. My guess is DubieBlazer76 is probably the last guy you would ask for pot...he probably has none. And, EliteSniper764 probably has never even put his/her eye to a scope in their life. Then again people could construe my name in the way am I saying I'm a king of monkeys with "MonkeyKing", or do people understand that's a well known 'eastern' fictional character? It’s a tricky thing to interpret what people THINK they are saying. I had a friend in college we all called ‘DoobBlaze’ (he smoked pot, but he smoked very little and shared it) , but we called him that because we already had two OTHER guys named Dave…we could not have three guys named Dave, right?

Everythinmg about a nickname or gametag is about how you see yourself at that time, and that is the danger because that name might only fit your mood for a day or a moment. I'd hate to be "ugotkilledbyachick" forever.
@bbain.... Walking Talking Stephen Hawking is indeed a great nick!

@manasteel... I like self-depreciating humour... and getting killed by "worstplayerever" would make me laugh! (similar to getting killed by "atoiletseat"). :)

@Stephen... yeah, I always feel silly when I say your name aloud in a game, but it also automatically makes me smile! I think you're right about the implication that getting killed by "a girl" being a bad thing is part of what annoys me about it.

@MK... I like the names with literary references! You also make a great point about picking a name and it's yours for a long, long time if you care at all about keeping your trophies, gamesaves and history. PSN doesn't seem to yet have a way to change a nick (though I think you can pay to have an Xbox tag changed). DubieBlazer76 might seem cool at the time... but 10 years later when you're a cop or stock broker or something, it might not seem nearly as cool!
@Epic-Kx

You know you want her.

When I played Halo PC a lot back in the day, my profile name was always something like "a baby seal" or "eating too many cheeseburgers" or "choking on his own wiener", because the game would always display "Player X was killed by..." and then show my name. Made me giggle :)
@Andy... those are my favorite type of names! LOL!
@Andy - I do that in Unreal Tournament. Fond memories of 'You were killed by A Rabid Squirrel' and the like. It also led to me using 'Jesus' for quite some time - it's still my Steam in-game name - because it makes basically all the UT messages hilarious. "You were killed by Jesus" is standard, but "Jesus is on a rampage", "Jesus is Godlike!" (very, very rarely :P), "Jesus was shot into space!" and so on are just beautiful.
I laughed out loud at the snipers picture.

My pet peeve is names that end in numbers. Every time I see a name that's something like whatever8589 I think, what, do I have to talk to the 8588 other whatevers first? If I try to create a username and someone else has it, I come up with another instead of tacking stuff at its end. (Someone once pointed out that it's weird to say that when my own username is The Random ONE, but that's clearly not a number, it's a pronoun.)

When I played CounterStrike, in what I think must have been the Bronze Age, I used the player name Nobody. That made for some interesting messages. Nobody is joining the Terrorists team! Nobody has planted the bomb!
How does Pwntubro make you feel? Cuz that's my gamertag...I was 13 when I got Xbox Live okay!! haha
Late to the party, but an awesome post as always.

I think that "ugotkilledbyagirl" can provoke some pretty conflicted feelings, understandably. On the one hand, it is designed to troll the most obnoxious, bottomfeeding teabagging sexist jerkwads - and no doubt they get hysterically angry when they DO get killed by "ugotkilledbyagirl," so job well done. We all like to see trolls get trolled.

But it's annoying and lame because it's a pyrrhic victory - she's resorted to just aping the same macho dumbass elitist behavior.

It might be a little hypocritical, to enjoy when a troll gets trolled, and irritated when the troll-troller kills you - but hey, we're complex creatures. ^_^
I definitely laughed at this and agree to no end. Then again my favorite activity in multiplayer games is muting people. I always roll my eyes at the group of people who go overboard if they think they have something to prove due to sex or creed or whatever. I understand why things like this occur and why the temptation and motivation to do that exists like the amputee who goes onto run like 700 marathons and talks about nothing else. Its fine to be defensive and want to act on what you feel you are being judged on but to only define yourself by that seems to be just as much a disservice. As an example I have hung out with way too many homosexuals who feel they need to mention they are gay in every sentence even to people who could have cared less just because they feel some need to show their empowerment of the situation and eventually it just gets silly. Anyways be yourself be content and don't go overboard it ends up looking insecure rather than confident. You are a girl and you game cool. End it at that and have fun gaming not trying to... um what is the equivalent of teabagging for women?
