I'm 50 years old, I'm female, I'm happily married, I'm retired from the work force... and I spend way too much time gaming. I enjoy long walks on the beach, with a gun, sometimes with my husband - shooting n00bs.
I not only like to shoot people, I also enjoy cooking and crafting. Mostly I make my own armor in games like Skyrim and cook my own potions after a busy day of hacking and slashing my way through various critters, guards and bandits in most any WRPG game.

So... according to this the new code word for pics of half naked ladies is going to be kittens? My, how original. The question asked was would we like to see more "kittens" on Destructoid.

My short answer is "no".

I remember when I first came to Destructoid some years ago. At that time there was a propensity for using header images of partially clothed women on many of the front page stories. The half naked women had absolutely nothing to do with the story - but there they were. Today we're more inclined to find random pictures of puppies, kittens or crudely drawn photoshops that looked like a 5 year old was let loose with MSPaint - but it's still better than the plethora of half naked women.

I personally have no problem with half naked women, I often am one - but I do have a problem with seeing half naked women on a video game site.

1. When I first joined Dtoid, I tried to encourage some of my friends to follow. A few did, but I often got feedback from the women that "it's a guy's site". They felt more comfortable moving over to one of the more general sites, or alternatively to some of the sites that specialized in "girl gamers". They didn't like the half naked gals on many of the headers and the "guy's locker room" feel to the site with the boner and fap jokes. I had hoped that there would be a time when there wouldn't need to be "guy gamer" and "girl gamer" sites, and I thought that time had arrived... but if Dtoid goes back to pandering to the majority audience of males, then I think it's a backward step. Gaming sites should be about gaming. They needn't feature pictures of half naked women to entice males (good writing should do that). If there absolutely must be pictures of half naked women, then equal time should be given to pics of attractive half naked men (code word "puppies" I guess!)

random half naked gamer girl picture!

2. Many of the complaints about the half naked women headers were actually from men. When anybody (male or female) is cruising a gaming site in a public space or from work, they shouldn't have to have one finger on the "close application" button in case they are caught. There shouldn't be confusion over whether they are viewing a gaming site or a porn site. They shouldn't have to make explanations to the wife, girlfriend or in some cases, boyfriend.

3. It's been a long time since I got asked what I was wearing while playing an online game. It's been a while since I got a penis picture sent to me over PSN, or got those wonderful "pic??" or "u got a cam?" messages. I almost miss them... but not enough to go back in time those few short years. A few years ago, the well known girls in gaming were generally those "wanna be models" that went to gaming sites and posted provocative pictures of themselves to gain popularity and possibly get their big break in the modeling/spokemodel industry. There used to be all kinds of "top 10 girl gamer" lists... and all were entirely based on pictures, and not at all on their gaming abilities. There was even the ill-fated "Miss Video Game" competition... again, based entirely on submitted pictures though they did include a gaming competition at one point (after people had voted on their pictures). The standard welcome for a female on most any video game forum was the quintessential "Tits or GTFO".
Times have changed. They've changed for the better. No one doubts that I'm actually a female who *gasp* likes to play video games. Being a female in an online game is no longer a big deal and the majority of PSN notes I currently get are usually complimenting me on my strategy and team based gameplay, or alternatively calling me a dickhead or a bitch for teamkilling them (it was an accident... honest!).
In short, we do NOT need to go back to a time where the perception of girl gamers is that we are all gaming in our Victoria's Secret underwear and will send you free topless pics of ourselves (because of course, we all want to be models).

4. In line with the above, we also do not need to go back to a time where the perception of male gamers is that they are all zit-faced horny teenagers who've never touched a real boob. Male gamers are married, they're parents, they're gay. Most of them have actually touched a real boob, and most also know how to type "xxx" into google and find real porn - free porn.

5. The sex industry wants the video game industry... but the video game industry doesn't need the sex industry. Porn is big dollars. It's everywhere. You can watch half naked porn stars play actual video games (credit cards required!)... or for your hard earned dollars you can even have a "playdate" and play an actual video game with a real live girl over at Gamecrush. They want your money... money that could be going to buying games or paying for that lapsed Xbox gold membership. The video game industry doesn't need porn... but porn wants to entice your dollar out of your wallet by appealing to your hobby... video games. Let's just keep them separate.

As a final thought... who the hell is Jo Garcia? I honestly don't know... but in reality, I also don't care. All I'll say is that her "exclusive" high resolution wall paper... how original. I bet nobody has ever thought of combining a half naked chick with video game consoles or controllers before.

Fapped.

Sorry, but if I want to look at porn, I'll go look at porn. Thanks to my draconian sysadmin at work banning freaking EVERYTHING I can't get to Destructoid at work anyway, so that's not my issue. No, my issue is that I'd like this to be a community friendly to everyone.

That exclusive wallpaper might attract an extra few of the male half of the population, but it's probably scaring off far more women. I mean shit, we chase off Elsa and Caiters, and who do we really have here who doesn't have a set of paired X's in their genetic makeup to balance out this sausagefest? And no, the staff and minions (i.e. interns) don't count.
Agreed. I never really liked that kind of pandering. "Look, you like boobs, you like games, GIVE US YOUR MONEY."
I'll go ahead and admit it...

I didn't read any of this blog despite the fact that I scrolled all the way to the bottom. If you were trying to make a point, I'm sure I just proved it.

Although the recent onslaught of boobs is a bit odd for a mainstream gaming site. It does kind of perpetuate the whole sexist jock male gaming thing that people outside of gaming seem to believe us as. Not that I dislike questionably aged girls getting naked and covering their no-no's with NES controllers, but that's what Google is for, not Destructoid.

edit: I just read it after typing this comment. I hope this isn't a trend, we certainly don't want to lose the females, if anything we need more of them. Support all gamers equally, I say!
Again, Elsa, I applaud you.

It's tacky, irrelevant, and somewhat demeaning. I understand that Destructoid is trying to pull in pageviews - but there are other ways to do it including, like you mentioned, good writing. And we have that here. I'm not sure what they're trying to do by advertising something like this. Maybe it pulls in the pre-teen market? But is it really worth scaring away the fast growing population of female gamers?

FYI Meteors I'm technically an intern ;] (although I've been putting it off for quite some time due to work). And it's going to take a lot more than some naked pictures to scare me off anyway!

On a side note - I really should find that picture of me when I dressed up as a PS2 for Halloween, fully clothed from head to toe. Real lady gamers have class when they dress up as game systems. ;]
You know, as soon as I read Niero's "kitten" article, I had a feeling you'd come through with an excellent blog about the topic, Elsa! I agree with all your points, especially #5. Let's gaming sites stick to games, and porn sites stick to porn.
Except for when Dale North or Hamza post... anything, I find Dtoid more ironically homoerotic than anything. It's not bad but definitely unusual, and I'm not sure if that makes women less or more uncomfortable.

I always thought no woman actually wanted to be a model. I always thought a model is what they settled on when their dreams of being an actress were crushed when they finally realized that they couldn't act. Either way I agree it's nice to see the decline of "gamer gurlz". Actual pornography aside (because at least they are honest and up front about what they're doing) that was one trend I'm happy to see mostly die out.
@Caiters

They become them, not wear them to cover their titties?

Speaking of which... I could almost respect it a bit if they said, "Hey, who wants to see more titties on Destructoid?" Almost. But hiding behind euphemisms like 'kittens' just makes the whole thing seem worse.
Did you know that the website Style Project used to be a comedy/fun site? Now it's just streaming porn. Jon Carnage told me about that.

Scary stuff!
Kitten isn't a code word for half-naked women. That article is a re post of an article that is a few weeks old with a new added video. The reason so many people were talking about kittens was because the original header image used was that of an adorable kitten, that header image got removed in the repost.

I had originally commented on the post and said.

"Honestly I'm more interested in the kitten."

All the people commenting about the need for more kittens on Destructoid, actually meant they wanted more pictures of cats.

As for the half-naked women posing with videogame controllers I've never liked it. I really hope Dtoid doesn't go down too much further down this route.
Not much to add except that there is a difference between pandering and genuine Inclusion. A lot of this stuff is simply pandering. It's hollow calories and tasteless.
"I really should find that picture of me when I dressed up as a PS2 for Halloween, fully clothed from head to toe."
I've seen plenty of naked women but I want to see something like that more! :P Seriously though I enjoy the nude variety of women but only very sparingly mixed with my gaming hobby and reading.
@Jonathan

Damn, I haven't been to stileproject in like a decade! You're right, though: it did use to have more than just the porn (though the porn was always a part of it).

Anyway, you just made me feel OLD... and you're WAY older than I am! :D

@Elsa

While I agree that we shouldn't go down that road, a bit of fun now and again is a good thing, and I'm sure that that's all this was supposed to be :)

After all, other than the post in question, Dtoid rarely posts pics of half-naked women these days. Like ScottyG said, you're much more likely to see homoerotic men making out with each other on the front page than you are T&A. So at least there's that :)

PS - now that you (I) mention it, someone really needs to go back through every front page post in the history of Dtoid and figure out the ratio between gay dudes making out and women wearing nothing but controllers. (For science, obviously.)
Forgot to add great blog, but like I said it was a repost and we were legitimately talking about cats when we said "kittens" (at least most of us were). More cats on Destructoid Yes, Half-naked women that have nothing to do with news No.
I really should post the pic of me dressed as a sexy Mario for Halloween... All I had on was the hat. ;)

In all seriousness, I've seen nothing but respect for women on gaming sites. In fact, some gamers go so far in "respecting" women that they act like puritans! That's what I find wrong! Some gamers act as if women should have no sexuality whatsoever, but comments like that are fine and never challenged, even though they put women down.
I kinda knew there was going to be some backlash about this. And it's indeed totally genuine and necessary. I don't think we understand how really hard it is for women in pretty much every sphere of life. Recently in the Skeptic movement, Rebecca Watson (Founder of Skepchick) attracted a lot of attention for speaking about sexism and harassment in the Skeptic community. Even in that field - which is for equality and understanding- there was blatant objectification of women.

Katamaya on twitter had a somewhat similar criticism about the term "girl gamer". I'm paraphrasing, but it was approximately what she was saying:" I don't want to be identified as a woman when I play video games. I just play them, that's it. My gender has nothing to do with it. And even if I was a guy, I'd still play the game freaking games."

Gender neutrality and equality. It's so simple. Can we at least give our Dtoid ladies that? Make them feel totally comfortable about talking about what they love with us, without expecting a "OH HOTNESS I WANT TO BANG YOU!".

I think it's the least we can do.

Boys are going to be boys, and I for one don't think it's necessary on Dtoid.
@meteorscrap... "community friendly to everyone" - exactly!

@Wrenchfarm... yeah, it usually does come down to money (in Playboy's case I guess they hope you go to the site and then opt for a more "premium" site membership... what with all the free porn on the internet nowadays I would guess that Playboy's subscriptions are down.)

@RenegadePanda... I doubt any of the existing female population would leave... they'd likely just complain loudly! LOL! (still, it could deter other females from joining.. as it did in the past).

@Caiters... YES! You must post that classy pic! (and congrats again on the internship!)

@Handsomebeast... yeah, that article sort of had "Elsa-bait" written all over it! :)

@Scotty... yeah, the switch from half naked women to the homoerotic stuff was pretty quick... and still a bit uncomfortable for many people I'm sure. There is a "middle point" of having fun and not being serious... while still being inclusive that seems to elude Dtoid a bit. I'm not bothered or truly offended by much myself... but then again, I'm old (and I game online LOL!)

@Jonathan.. haven't heard of that site, but I don't doubt that a lot of sites gave into the money-allure of sex.

@Sissors.. WHAT? Dtoid would never be sloppy and lazy and simply add on to an existing/previous story that was previously posted and included comments that have nothing to do with the current posting!! Yeah.. I detest it when they do that. It truly is sloppy journalism.
(though you could be just covering your ass for your kitten comment! LOL!)

@Sheppy.. sex does sell... no doubt about it, but at some point it really does feel like "pandering"!

@Ramminchuck... another vote for the PS2 pic!

@Andy... yeah, these days they rarely do post the half naked and irrelevant girl pics they used to... and it's been a nice change .. and somebody should definitely do that study!

@Sissors... yeah, I do have a love of lolcat pics (a weakness of mine)... so I too vote for more kitties! - real ones!

@VenusinFurs... if all you've seen is respect for women on gaming sites, then you don't get around much! :)
... You are very right though that there should be equal treatment, women are not virginal puritans either.

@Kraid... nicely said! All of it!
Heh, the Faps for this actually feel kinda wrong for once.
Well, to be fair, I don't go to many gaming site, but the few that I do go to; I see nothing but respect. I guess I'm lucky! :P
It did feel a bit Kotaku circa 2009-2010, didn't it?

Hell, not even they post that shit anymore; just Brian Ashcraft's sensational human interest stories about Japanese women I don't know and/or care about. Hey, baby steps and all that.

All those images has the perception of "trying too hard". That's my biggest complaint. The false nature of it all. You know, like when you see a picture where they're in an office fully clothed, chatting with files limply in their hands and you just know from the way its staged (the overtly mundane feel to the look of people out of their recruited element) it's the start of a porno rather than a staff training movie.

It's got that deseperate look of attention with minute relatability. Though, I guess that's why gamers are too smart to fully fall for it. I don't like that kind of half-arsed pandering to a hobby most don't care to understand.

Anyway, I don't know who Jo Garcia is, but those shoes would look lovely in a merlot colour and with an inch taken down. Look, I like good shoes on a woman, okay?!
I remember a time when a blog would easily clear 50+ comments solely if the writer was female. Also, we haven't had a cam-whore in ages! I guess what I'm saying is that the community has matured, despite what it seems at times. I don't mind "kittens" but I really don't need it on my video game sites. I can find a "pet store" for those needs. It may draw more page hits but probaly at the cost of our dignity. Great blog as always!!

If we really need more views all we need to do is send Sterling a thong and a camera anyways.
I honestly don't think there's that much to worry about, in all honesty. Just because Playboy sent Niero a video and a wallpaper of Jo Garcia doesn't mean the site's going to start posting pictures of half-naked women on a regular basis. On top of that, this isn't exactly something Dtoid hasn't done in the past (Need I bring up the fact that on the bottom of the page there's a link labeled "You Might Like Boobies" that links to all posts with that tag) and I don't think it's going to become a regular thing.

Also,as for Destructoid not being safe for work, when has the site EVER been safe for work? This is a place where Jim will post homoerotic pictures of men, and Hamza posted a video whose sole content was of two erotic dancers at TGS. If you're reading Destructoid at work, there's never been any guarantee that you're not going to come across something that shouldn't come up.

I'm not saying that the Jo Garcia post was entirely in good taste, but I don't think it's worth getting worked up over, at least not yet.
*re-reads first sentence in comment*

Dammit.

*puts quarter in redundancy jar*
This was my reaction to today's posting. While I can't speak for women, I don't like seeing this on a gaming website. If I want to look at porn, I'll find plenty of it on other dedicated websites.

I didn't start coming to Destructoid until sometime in 2009, so I never had to deal with any kind of "bro" style. I've always seen the highly refined and interesting stories from the varied talent.

I guess sometimes you just need to get hits, though. Maybe Destructoid is in a slump or they just want to promote something they feel needs extra promotion. You can't blame them for making their own decisions, regardless of how stupid they may be.

We still get the high quality content from the staff, so for the time, I think we should just let this be. The articles in question didn't treat the women like common whores or sluts, so that's still positive.
It definitely can feel like a boys club around here sometimes, pretty much half of the new announcements or any cool trailer is met with the comments section being filled with everyone talking about how much they are jizzing over the game (something I’m guilty of myself on occasion but I just can’t resist a running joke) and while that doesn’t necessarily exclude or “attack” women it does create an atmosphere that I’d bet is hard to jump into.

I would like to give Dtoid the benefit of the doubt on this one, the kittens post is literally Niero saying “Hey guys, Playboy just sent me this picture out of the blue.” and then debating with himself on whether or not he should post it, basically saying that he’s aware that the picture was tacky and lame but history shows this stuff gets hits, eventually coming to the conclusion that once in a while wouldn’t hurt. And as far as I’m aware, nothing of the sort has been posted since that original blog (and now the update with the video)

As for the post following it, which I’d like to chalk up to coincidence, both the story and most of the comments could be summed up as “Ha ha, that’s really stupid”. I guess what I’m trying to say is that most of the “core” Dtoid community probably checked out those stories so we could laugh at a woman faking an orgasm awkwardly intertwined with retro game footage because it’s dumb, and fun to laugh at.
first of all, i'm a semi-professional photographer, so when i saw that image, i didn't think "porn" at all. i thought "wow, having her lay on that mirror with the 80's light reflections really emphasizes the golden age of games" i thought it was a really good photograph (aside from the placement of her left leg, so awkward). So while i agree with everything you say about porn and game sites, i just don't see this as porn so much as a really fucking cool image reciprocating the allure of retro gaming... and i don't think something should be disregarded just because it happens to evoke or involve something sexual. whatever the reason for the photo being posted, PR, hits, etc, it's still a great image that honestly doesn't belong many other places than a gaming site. now as for top ten videogame boobies countdowns and shit like that...
Great read and I agree 100%.
I have to say it was rather awkward going out to the front room today and having to explain to my son's grandmother that he wasn't looking at porn, but a legitimate gaming site. lol

That said, I didn't find it offensive, personally, to have the two articles on the front page, (mainly because it doesn't happen too often) but I have to agree with Elsa on part of her blog. As a leading game site you set an image, and although all of us women can laugh and joke and go along with the good times, if it were to become more frequent on the front page.....well it really hurts everything we've accomplished up to this point. We really don't want to deal with that crap again.

Came across this right before reading this blog:

Agreed, although I've never really made a distinction between 'guy' and 'girl' gamer. I've just noted that videogames have been a primarily male-populated hobby. As for the half-naked girls with controllers all over them, I find the pictures rather disgusting. They're in very poor taste and look like a mess. The video of Jo Garcia that was recently posted made me laugh because of how silly it was.

I don't think dtoid is going to go "back to the way it was" though. I think that post is just Niero being Niero.
Agreed. Also, I think the porn industry is going to wrong way by trying get gamer's attention. I don't see a market out there for porn with gamers since a lot of gamers out there are entitled pricks who want everything served to them on a silver platter for free. Protip: Good porn can be found for free on the internet.

Now, where the hell are those "hardcore" feminists when you need them? Why aren't they shouting at these half-naked women to tell them that they're not really helping their cause? Its probably because they think these half-naked women are just "victims of a male-dominated society."
I feel guilty for fapping this because...you know.
Here here! Leave the boobs on boobie sites.
To be brutally honest, I feel ok with it being a red blooded man.

On the objective side of things, I don't really see a lot of posts going up in an "objectifying women" sort of manner. And I do side with @Handy's point that Niero came out up front and said something along the lines of, "Hey guys, I know Dtoid has grown a lot since 2006, and I want to make sure our content is respectable, but Playboy sent us this and I feel I should at least let you guys know about it."

It's still a legitimate point, especially with the majority of the speech going around (again, @Handy, the use of words like jizzing and so forth, mostly male oriented language). But I feel it's not as big a deal as it really is, at least, for now.
I look at kitty posts the same way I look at Sports articles. They aren't posted for me, but I can see where some of the audience would like them.
Agreed! Porn is free everywhere I don't need to find it on my video game site. It's the same reason we have posting guidelines in the forums to keep the kids in line with what is and what is not appropriate. Makes it a bit daunting if the front page allows worse then the basement does.
As you guys all know I like to test new stuff all the time and ask for feedback. Sometimes its software, sometimes its editorial. Otherwise I'm working on our Beta, now 2 years in the making!

Despite the success of Hamza's 2006 Nerdcore post we haven't turned into a porn site yet, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. Nobody on staff really wants to post that stuff on a regular basis and if it wasn't for Playboy reaching out to us to give us the exclusive it wouldn't have ever happened. This is a test, only a test :)
Agreed, Elsa. It just seems really out of place to me, but as long as it doesn't become a regular thing for the site then I suppose it's not too big of a deal. It can be very off-putting for some people though, I'm sure. I don't think posting more half-naked men as compensation is a good idea though, I think just less half-nakedness on the front page in general is probably the best solution.

Also, @Andy, I wish they would post less images of gay men making out as well. This isn't GayGamer.net (actually, even they don't post many headers like that, if any). To me, it seems that those images are posted to be humorous, and the reactions tend to be either, "LOL gay guys" or "god dammit get this gay shit off my gaming site," neither of which are very positive reactions. If it's relevant to the article somehow, then I wouldn't mind so much, but when they're just randomly thrown in there for comedy, I get slightly offended.
Complete agree with you, Elsa. I'm disappointed that Operation: Kitten is apparently go. While the majority of Destructoid's audience want this, I don't think they're going to like where it ends up taking them. In my opinion, at least, that path leads to the end of what makes this site just so awesome.
I'm more bothered by the blasé attitude to rape over in the forums than I am about a bit of thigh and midriff that has been Photoshopped to hell and back being show on the front page.
I agree, if you are posting nude girlz, then at least post the same ammount of nude guyz ,well said Elsa!
The rape stuff on the forums is more overdone and stale than anything else, and I've only been around a month.
After being reminded in the comments I guess that Dtoid is pretty keen on posting nude guys too. But I guess the issue is one of suitability. But as I don't think we will see these kind of things posted that frequently I'm pretty assured that Dtoid wont turn into a porn-site anytime soon :) But as stated before, very valid points Elsa!
Yep agree with everything you said. If I want porn I'll find porn. I dont come to destructoid for it, and it just feels like having this stuff cheapens the feel of this site. That playboy video was so ridiculously awful.
I want to agree with you Elsa, I really do. But to do that may also imply that I would refuse to see half naked pics of Joseph Gordon-Levitt on Dtoid and I just cant get behind that.
Thanks so much for this post, Elsa. Not much to say beyond adding another voice in your corner. You rock!
More header images contain half naked men than half naked women. I've never posted any tits, myself, but I've posted a few articles with sweaty, shirtless men in the header. Perhaps I'm just gay for video games.

So I doubt it will get to the point where the site is covered in tits. I can sympathise with the concern that it might, though. This gamer girl porn malarkey has completely gone over my head, I just don't get it and I feel stupid when I try to.
@Niero.. it was the part in your post asking us if we wanted more "kittens" on the website... and my response simply turned into a blog. It was also the sad coincidence of having the Jo Garcia video/wallpaper right next to the unnecessary story about porn stars gaming topless for dollars that made me irritable.

Glad to hear that no new nerdcore gallery is planned - I really don't want to return to 2006!

... though in the end, I think some other really interesting points were raised here by others!
@bbain

Very good point!
"I'm more bothered by the blasé attitude to rape over in the forums [...]"

"The rape stuff on the forums is more overdone and stale than anything else, and I've only been around a month."

Hear, hear. It's things like this that really emphasize how inbred the forums can be at times.

As for the frontpage, I'd much rather see articles lambasting the chauvinism permeating the medium than headers of tits to garner pageviews.
Not fapping as I was led to believe there would be actual kittens contained within. No kitties, no faps.
There is a time and a place for sexuality, but that time and place I hope is somewhat limited on this site. We should be able to discuss anything we want here, but people should think before they post just anything. Respect isn't censoship, it is a choice to be truly thoughful about what you do and say.
