About Me
I'm 50 years old, I'm female, I'm happily married, I'm retired from the work force... and I spend way too much time gaming. I enjoy long walks on the beach, with a gun, often with my husband - shooting n00bs. We can currently be found shooting random people in MAG or Killzone 3, but we also like to travel and are looking forward to an upcoming adventure in space with Dust 514.
I not only like to shoot people, I also enjoy cooking and crafting. Mostly I make my own armor in games like Skyrim and cook my own potions after a busy day of hacking and slashing my way through various critters, guards and bandits in most any WRPG game.

If you're into a threesome or foursome with a mature couple, then come join us - only be sure to bring a med kit. We're old, sometimes we fall down and can't get back up without some help!

So feminists got all riled up about the game "Fat Princess" - a simple fun game that showed that eating too much cake will make you fat, that the Kingdom's loyal subjects love their Princess regardless of whether she is fat or skinny... and a game that allows for female warriors to help rescue the Princess. Huh?

On one side are the "feminists"... and frankly I have no idea what their argument is... well, maybe aside from the tired old cliche that a Princess even needs rescuing... and on the other side there appears to be everyone else that simply likes games, but also seem to hate "feminists".

Big picture kids! We women today are lucky that we are able to vote, to own land, to become educated, to earn an income... we women today were raised with the idea that we can be anything we want to be... even an astronaut. We owe this to ... yes, you guessed it - feminists. Feminism at it's basics is a doctrine that advocates for equal rights for women, for the female gender to be treated equally under law and by society.

Men, ask yourself...
Do you want the little lady to be able to go to the corner store and pick you up a case of beer?
Do you like to look at sexy pictures of women?
Do you like to see a woman walking down the street in a skirt and sexy high heels?
Do you want your wife/girlfriend to earn an income... and help pay for your beer?
Do you want your daughter to be educated in a school?

If you answered yes to any of these questions... then smooth out that "No Fat Chicks" T-shirt, put down your beer, sit up straight and say out loud "I am a Feminist".

In areas under Taliban rule, women are not allowed outside without a burqa (covered from head to toe), they may not leave the house without the escort of a male relative (and should they have none, they simply may not leave the house). They may only attend school until the age of 8 and may only learn about the Qur'an. Bottom floor windows of houses must be painted over or screened so that a woman may not be seen from the street without the burqa. Women are not to be employed. They may only receive limited medical care due to the fact that male doctors could not visually examine them and had to diagnose based on verbal questions. In other countries, honor killings of women are common... women who are raped and become pregnant, women who in any way are seen to bring "dishonor" to their families may be killed... pretty much with impunity (no punishment).

This woman is NOT a feminist. She is a fat chick concerned with weight-discrimination.

This woman IS a feminist. Her sign reads "stop violence against women".

The man holding the gun... no, he is not a feminist.

This man, yes, he is a feminist.

It's sad that in our society, "feminist" is becoming a dirty word. Just in my lifetime within the United States the Equal Pay Act (1963) was passed giving women the right to the same pay as men for the exact same job, the first state law was passed in 1976 making it illegal for a man to rape his wife, and other laws have been passed to allow women many of the same rights as men. It seems that in the western world we take for granted many of the struggles of early feminists that give us the life we lead today. Much of the fault does lie with women... who expanded the word "feminism" to encompass an "anti-men" rhetoric and to pursue agendas that had nothing to do with equal rights for men and women. At it's heart however, "Feminism" simply seeks for women the life and rights that we western women have already achieved.

I am a feminist... and I like the game Fat Princess.

Wow, I really didn't realize that there was such a controversy surrounding this game. Hoping that I might be able to pick it up. If I'm lucky, maybe I'll get all riled up over its treatment of women. Yeah!

But, yeah, I think you're right in that people really seem to misunderstand what feminism is supposed to be. Luckily, we have the word feminazi to describe someone who's doin it wrong.

:] That last line made me laugh so hard as did your blog title :D Gotta love Bill Bailey :)

Women played their part in the war too, making bombs, grenades, ammunition, weapons, all that shit, without them, there' would have been even less ammo, and soldiers were short on it anyway. Women definitely helped the world get freedom as well as all the male soldiers that died too.

I salute you :] XD That made me laugh for some reason.

Bill Bailey is the guy in the "This is what a Feminist T-Shirt looks like" if you didn't know. English comedian.

Without wanting to open a kettle of fish, I've always wanted a "Feminist" to explain this...
Wimbledon Championships 2009.
Men's Prize Money - £850,000
Women's Prize Money - £850,000

Looks equal.
Women play a best 2 of 3 match. That means a Maximum of 3 Sets.
Men play a best of 5 match. That means a Minimum of 3 sets.

Assuming each match reaches the maximum possible amount of sets.
Men are paid around £24,000 per set.
Women are paid £40,000

That's not even factoring in Men's tennis being a much bigger attraction and higher quality sport.

Go equality!

There is an amazing in for a discussion about the fine line of acceptability that lies somewhere between Lara Croft and Fat Princess in terms of what is deemed appropriate in relation to body image by the so-called "feminists" that insist on attacking video games.

In fact, I would say that, in a media full of muscle-bound meat tower men like Marcus Fenix and Kratos, it's more sexist to imply that the only appropriate female body type is a vanilla, completely average, Jane Doe that lacks any sort of character whatsoever.

Couldn't agree more. I think the very fact that someone can say that their not a feminist, and still be socially accepted, shows just how warped the word has become.

The thing that blew my mind about the blog of that woman in the first picture is how off the rails she went. I mean, it's just a video game! It doesn't really say anything in inherently negative about either fat people OR women. I can't believe some of these people can't "get" that Fat Princess is just meant as a humorous twist to the age old "rescue the princess" thing. I mean, I seriously doubt hardcore feminist bloggers would be angrily rushing to their keyboards if, say, a new Mario Bros. game was coming out. But if the developers JOKINGLY change the landscape by making it so that the Princess was purposefully made fat to make her harder to rescue, the joke somehow embodies the destruction of all feminist thought everywhere! That is the lamest thing to get indignant about considering all the real problems there are in America (and the world) with women's rights, sexism, and misogyny.

LOL... I had no idea who the guy in the Tshirt was... but a google search finally came up with a pic of an average looking guy in that Tshirt!

@Kauza... the "feminist controversy" over the game Fat Princess was in large part started by the woman in the first picture who wrote a blog denigrating the game (though I don't recall her labeling herself as a "feminist" - but the press seemed to label her as such).

@Zippy... yeah, people forget that the men and women still fighting in Afghanistan aren't just fighting terrorists... they are also there to help ensure that Taliban rule is not expanded and so that women may remain somewhat safer and receive medical treatment.

@Aurain... as I said, feminism seems to have expanded well beyond it's initial intents of "equality" between men and women, which seems to have created a backlash against those early women who simply fought for human dignity and legal rights for women. :(

The sad thing is that modern day feminists have seen their original message and hopes perverted by women/girls that essentially want pure role reversal and want to be considered "players" (in regards to sexual conquests) instead of true equality.

Enough serious talk, time for a joke:
Q: Man hits a woman with his car, who is at fault?
A: The man obviously, what was he doing driving a car in the kitchen?

@Joseph... too late! I'm already married!

@Scary... nice to meet another "feminist" :)

@suitcoatavenger... YES.. great point about body image being a "female" issue... but it's not a "feminist" issue in my eyes. I do think that females in video games should not be as idealized as they sometimes are, but the key word is "sometimes". There are lots of well portrayed female characters as well (Alyx Vance for example).

Reverend Macro... you managed to sum up my blog in much fewer words! That's entirely the point I was hoping to make only you made it much more succinctly!

@Arch and Eternal... yeah, body image changes over time. We're actually entering an era where being a "healthy weight" is finally becoming more acceptable again (for men and women).

@jamnontheone... exactly.... and it is sad that people have perverted the original intent of the word "feminist"

My mother teaches women studies in college, so I was always raised with the notion that men and women are equal. I think that these so-called "feminists" should concern themselves with the fact that 60% of women have a lower income then men, regardless of position.

Thanks Zyr... that clarifies how Shakesville (the woman in pictured in my blog) got the "feminist" label!

LOL Silverdragon!!... and yes, I can go make you a sandwich, bring you a beer... and we can both still be feminists! :)

@Zippy... I'll have to check him out.. and yes, I knew you were speaking of WW1/2, but just added the bit about Afghanistan as it seemed more current. :)

@WanderingPixel... that's a whole other issue. The early feminists sought for women to be paid the same as men if they did the same job as men. There is now legislation in place to support this. Women do tend to earn less as a whole than men... but in large part this is due to the fact that many women prefer to work part-time and also many women are not willing to make the career sacrifices that many men do... willing to move for promotions, work the very long hours that some men do, etc. For women that want it... the opportunities are there and legally supported... but back to "make me a sandwich", we women also have the choice to be stay at home moms, or to be secondary incomes and many women avail themselves of that choice. Again, it's a complex issue.

I guess they could have called the game "ANOREXIC PRINCESS". One team tries to fatten the princess up to make her harder to carry, and the other team tries to get her to throw up to lose all that weight to make her easier to carry.

On second thought, the feminists might have a serious problem with this game as well.

It's as if the "feminists" are worried that a bunch of people are going to appear around them and try to shove cake down their throats in order to keep other people from taking them. Just as bad as people who say violent games turn kids into snipers.

It's a game. Chill out.

Also, SilverDragon1979: it doesn't work unless you say "sammich" and tell her to get back into the kitchen when she's done. Should make sure she has no shoes on as well. Bonus points if she's pregnant.

I like the game, Fat Princess and I am somewhat a Feminist. I agree that women should have all the rights that men do and no special consideration. If we get time off for maternity leave, then guys should get an option of parental leave. Equal rights should always go both ways.

Don't agree with that tennis thing, but I do agree Marilyn Monroe was hot. Women had curves back then. Meow!

My only problem is with the uber fems that have to pick apart my favorite games because somehow they find it demeans women in some strange Freudian message that only they can find. It's Mario, its not meant to change the world, so either play it or shut the fuck up so the rest of us can.

There's a large difference between "equal rights activist" and "feminist" these days as no self respecting women wants to be that kind of "feminist" as they've done a lot more bad than they have good by trying to spread around the concept that girls can't just do everything anyone else can but girls are somehow than everyone else. I fully support this article!

On the matter of "special consideration"

...that was one of the things growing up that I had the hardest time with. I would often get asked to do things for my sister or mother that they could have done, but expected me to because I was the male in the situation...usually heavy lifting or physical labour. I also remember one instance where I got into a fight with my sister when we were kids. However, I was the only one that got punished because "boys aren't supposed to hit girls". Apparently the fact that she instagated it by pushing me down the stairs paled in comparison to me slugging her on the arm.

Things like that still do my head in.

I may be wrong, but isn't someone vital to the game (lead programmer, the chief artist, the person who came up with the idea?) a woman? I remember this controversy when it started and many groups called foul on "yet another male stereotype against women" or the like, and the revelation that at the helm was a woman...whoops.

That said, many people today see feminists as man-haters. Chief example? Look at the opening to Boondock Saints. That lady is what most people see when they hear the word "feminist."

Maybe we can make a new term. What about equal-rights humanists? =P

If you want equality fine but don't get upset because I didn't open a door for you every time. Also the maternity leave thing for women and not men is fine with me, women sacrifice thier bodies for 9 months, getting some time off after that is fine by me. I disagree.
I think the first group of people were probably a bunch of crazy hippies, so I think the word was ruined from the start. And anyway, the meanings of words change all the time, so there's no use trying to reclaim it at this point.

I think If someone really wants to distinguish themselves, they should start using a different word, like equalitist, or something...

I don't think you should call that lady with the sign a feminist, because like as seen in the other picture, that's the word that crazy, angry, bloggers use to describe themselves, . You can if choose to though, because it's a free country for all. Or you're from Canada, right? Even better if you are. There is even more libery over here, I believe.

You've been reading my screenplay thing, Esla, so one thing I want to mention is that one of the things I want to stress when I write more of them is making strong female characters. I'm not a fan of Princess Toadstool (I guess the kids call her Peach these days) when she's kinda just captured, but when she starts kicking some butt and making some actual "princess" decisions, that's really something.

Pretty much agreed with all this.
