How a guy got frustrated with his stick, or Problems with Soulcalibur 4 on PS3
ElfAngel7 | 3:01 AM on 07.30.2008 13 comments

So a couple months back I decided to look for the PS3 arcade stick that Aaron Linde
suggested that people buy. Well, I managed to find the very same Hori stick that he was
talking about and I've been enjoying it ever since.

HOWEVER

I pop in SC4 into my PS3 and find that the game doesn't recognize my stick at all except for
the Home button on the top. When I press it, it jumps to the XMB and then all of a sudden the
system recognizes the stick. So it'll work with every other fighting game EXCEPT the game
that I originally bought the stick for. Is anybody else having the same problem?

Other than that I'm really enjoying the game. The create a character is a blast, the gameplay
proper is amazing, the online mode worked like a charm without any lost frames. The only
thing tarnishing this great game is the fact that I'm forced to use the Dualshock 3 with a game
that is clearly meant for a stick.

It would help if you named the stick you are using

I use the Hori Fighting Stick 3, and it works fine. However, the buttons are skewed the opposite way that they should be. Minor issue though.. at least it works.

Game-wise, its a great game but wow it feels really short. I've only had it for a few hours and I beat story and arcade mode with every character.

The "Tower" is the only thing I have left and even then I'm flying through it quite competently.

Really? A story mode with only 5 stages?

Also, I'll be trying out my own Stick later now that I remember I have it.

I've had no problems with the Hori Fighting Stick 3 or my X Arcade Solo. Did you have the stick plugged in before powering up the system? Did you turn off your standard controller?

GANTZ

I must suck, because I've only beat story mode with 4 characters and only made it to floor 10 in tower mode. For the reviewers that said button mashing works in Soul Caliber is full of shit.

Story Mode is only 5 stages, but you're also fighting 3 or 4 people in each stage.

Its not like any SC game before it was epic long or anything.
I have still yet to play it since I am a bit broke this month, but I hope to pick it up soon.

Sucks to hear about the arcade stick. I was thinking of picking one up :( The game itself is pretty amazing though. I just wish it had a better singleplayer. Tower of Souls in no replacement for the incredible Chronicle of Swords from 2.

BTW, what's you're PSN so we can fight?
Aurvantoid's Destructoid Blog
@Gantz - Yeah, I kinda feel that way as well. I can pretty much go through Story mode for a character in about 3-4 minutes on normal so after about 15-20 minutes of playing I've unlocked like 4 bonus characters.

Also, I have no idea why people built up Hilde because I find her to be insufferable. However, I'm totally digging Shura and Algol.

I'm definitely picking up a stick as soon as I know I have some free money. I have no idea how I played this game on the Dreamcast.
Crunshii's Destructoid Blog
yep ditto, getting this game hopefully today after work.

Darth Vader version :)

Was the sexual innuendo intentional in the blog title? If so, bravo.

Is anyone else underwhelmed by Algol? I mean, Abyss/Night Terror is a hard act to follow, but he doesn't give off the sense of "intimidating final boss" to me. I haven't checked out all of his moves yet, so maybe there's some kickass stuff lurking in that command list.
whormongr's Destructoid Blog
@Aurvantoid I can see why ppl like hilde, she's kinda cheap- still need to unlock stuff- brought it home last night and just played my GF a bunch in vs. to try out the feel of the game and some of the moves... I am still a voldo fan though I just like the way he moves- so I created a hot half naked chick with voldo moves in the character creator
ElfAngel7's Destructoid Blog
It's the Hori Fighting Stick 3. I didn't have it plugged in from booting up the system and i didn't turn off the other controllers, I'll have to try that.

and yes, the innuendo was intentional :-)

 about me

Nintendo gamer for life, begrudging owner of a PS3, aching for games for both of my consoles. Sigh.

I'm all about the RPG's, starting with Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG, all the way through Final Fantasy 6-12 (skipping 11) and ending up with Persona 3 and Ar Tenelico. Square is where its at, as long as its premerger. My opinion thereafter is low at best.

I'm also a HUGE anime fan, getting my cherry popped by a set of Dragonballs and a transexual boy/girl named Ranma. In the intervening years I've discovered the greatness of 'School Rumble', 'Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien', 'The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya', 'Elfen Lied', and basking in the glory that is 'Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo' and 'Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann'. I try to empty my wallet as quickly as possible collecting inglorious amounts of PVC statues and figures.

Speaking of statues and figures, I write a some-what weekly feature on sister site Tomopop called Go For Broke where I focus on a single series (both anime and non-anime) and provide pictures of different statues and info on where you can pick them up. Think of me of the pusher that doesn't directly sell you the stuff but points you in the right direction.

Enough pimping, let's rock!
