Hardest Levels in Video Games of all Time.
Elder Scrolls Altmer Hater | 7:57 AM on 05.09.2008 28 comments

Okay so I read on my reader an article about the five hardest levels in video games of all time. I was just curious as to what others thought because my ideas of hard were different than those in the article.

1.
"Through the Fire and Flames" -Dragonforce on Guitar Hero III 'nuff said.

2.

Trying to get the "Hiduken" capsule in Megaman X seriously it took me so long to get it. That and the battle against Sigma in at the end of the game.

3.
Psycho Mantis was a real pain in the ass! Until I figured out the controller port trick I was royally pissed off.

4.
Seriously the Zombies Ate My Neighbors level where you're chased by the chainsaw guys was nearly impossible.

5.
And yes I thought Final Fantasy Mystic Quest was a real pain in the ass especially the level where you had to use the shovel to dig up an artifact but the game didn't seem to give you one damn clue as to where the son of a bitch was located I'm still angry about that.

Is this post awesome? Vote it up!

TMNT for the NES: The whole game was hard

Ninja Gaiden for the NES: fucking ridiculous
shipero's Destructoid Blog
1. Yeah, that song is a bitch.
2. Not really a level, more of task. Still a bitch though.
3. Again, not a level. Not even really that hard.
4. I hate those chainsaw guys. That weren't that big a threat to me but they slaughtered the people you were supossed to save.
5. ...What? I think you're confusing Mystic Quest with FF7.

You can also put the last 3 levels of Super Ghouls and Ghosts in there. I found the last stage in God Hand to be a real bitch. One more Red Star, once you get to level 8 the game really fucks you up.

The bike level in Battletoads is the hardest level in gaming history.

@reaprar and @vwgti

I totally forgot about that stupid game. I never and will never be able to beat that level.

FUCK BATTLETOADS!
BlackSheep's Destructoid Blog
Top Gun - Level 2, refuel or die.

i do agree with battletoads and TMNT too.

argh i miss the crazy difficulty level to make up for short games :)

This list needs a little more substance - can you write more than a sentence about each one?

I don't know if this is more of a "hardest level" or "most annoying level," but how about the spiked things in Hades from God of War?
VWGTI's Destructoid Blog
@ Kryptinite

Yea, I never EVER beat that level. Suprisingly, I still have nothing but fond memories of the game. It was so great.

Here's a video of one incredible gamer owning the bike stage: Perfect Bike Stage

Yeah, there's no shovel in FFMQ.

5. The Hudson River bomb defusing level in TMNT.
4. Ghosts N' Goblins -- Any level. Pick a level. Seriously.
3. Cybernoid. The entire game is one level of dicking.
2. Ecco The Dolphin -- Welcome To The Machine + Final Boss.
1. The bike race (OR ANYTHING AFTER THAT) level in Battletoads.
NegFactor's Destructoid Blog
Oh, and really. I would love to debate to the death with you my list versus yours. :P

My girlfriend was able to get the hadoken-powerup back when she was a kid. The Psycho Mantis encounter wasn't as difficult as it was simply a neat concept. AND I STILL DON'T SEE ANYTHING ABOUT BATTLETOADS.
blehman's Destructoid Blog
Are you thinking of "Link to the Past" with the shovel line? Because if you're equating Mystic Quest with hard you should ride one of these:

Also, the sewer levels on TMNT for NES.
ScottyG's Destructoid Blog
What the hell? There's shit much harder than the bike race in Battletoads. Yeah, it's balls hard, but it's the exact same level every time. There's no random obstacles being thrown at you just to fuck you up and piss you off. You remember what's coming up and hope your reflexes are good enough. A combination of memorization and reflexes... a good kind of hard that makes it all the more satisfying every time you beat it.

Besides, there's a warp to skip the final section. Don't be a bunch of pussies. :p

All I have to say is:

Spider-Man/X-Men: Arcade's Revenge

Fuck that game.
VWGTI's Destructoid Blog
@ DrkAdonis

Yes, Storm's underwater levels were a nightmare. Ugh!
bbrigg1's Destructoid Blog
ScottyG is right. You are pussy if you say the bike race is one of the "hardest levels in video games of all time". The bike level is a fucking cake walk compared to the level where you're in the jet. Even the snake level is harder (the one after you warp).

The last part of FarCry is the absolute hardest shit I have ever played. I never beat it. Right when you get inside the base, there are like 4 dudes with m16's, then if you manage to luckily kill even one of them, some motherfuckers walk out with rocket launchers. Not to mention those asshole are hurling grenades the whole time.

And why does that Transformer at the bottom of your banner have fingernails?
king3vbo's Destructoid Blog
Battletoads.

That is all.
Gen Eric Gui's Destructoid Blog
Why does everyone say the River Bomb Defusing stage from TMNT was hard? Is it really that hard to not touch the edges of a stage? The sewer levels in area 3, now THOSE are hard.
Char Aznable's Destructoid Blog
Isn't that the Beast Wars Optimus Prime? With that said, fingernails on a robot gorilla still make no sense, but go with it.
Aerox's Destructoid Blog
I would assume that the final level of Ikaruga is the hardest level, but I can't make it that far even with continues so I'm going to have to say Level 4 of Ikaruga since that's the furthest I can get.
Scientist tz's Destructoid Blog
Battletoads and TMNT come up in every discussion about "the hardest games ever" and I'm getting sick of seeing them mentioned.

Those games were so hard that they were *prohibitively* difficult. I wonder what percentage of people who bought those games actually completed them. I know I didn't and I was a pretty stubborn kid.

If a game is prohibitively difficult it is a bad game and not worth discussing. Battletoads and TMNT were bad games.

Kudos to Hater for not mentioning any of those pieces of shit.
NegFactor's Destructoid Blog
@ScottyG: You're saying people are pussies by NOT using a warp to skip to the final section? I think it takes a lot more balls (and skill) to go through the game straight-on.

@scientist tz: I've beaten TMNT and I will say that it was ridiculously difficult, but definitely doable. I'd take a walk through the TMNT memories park any day of the week over considering playing Ecco again.

Any game where you can be practically one-hit killed at anytime in an entire level, have to navigate a tricky maze that autoscrolls AND attempts to push you toward a direction during that autoscrolling AND you have to redo the entire level if you manage to die in the final boss fight (which if you've played the final boss fight, is just kinda silly -- pop the eyes, break the jaws what...three times? Then charge it, all while avoiding decaptitating alien-thingies and the queen trying to swallow you) is ridiculous.

Also, insanely long parenthetical description amidst long run-on sentence.
ScottyG's Destructoid Blog
@NegFactor
Erm... no. I'm saying that the bike level in Battletoads isn't really that hard, it just takes memorization and actual skill. The mention of the warp is really a tangent, but it is there if you don't possess said skills. :p

@Aerox
Heh, good call. Maybe someday we'll get to level 5 together. :p
sevink's Destructoid Blog
solstice for the NES, enough said. I want everyone to goto youtube and look at that game, and try to tell me the entire game isn't the hardest thing ever. Theres really no overview maps. and they don't tell you ANYTHING on what your doing or where your supposed to go and what goes with where. Go now

Solstice
NegFactor's Destructoid Blog
@sevink -- That game was more retarded than hard, I think. I blame awkward controls and a sheer need to thoroughly explore and remember rooms to a tee that made the game difficult. I've seen a speed-run that was only six minutes long. :P Mind you, I know I could never do it...but that's mostly because I don't care enough about the game to try and beat it. I owned it when I was a kid, played it a bit, hated it, and left it alone.
