Would you say I have a plethora of failed consoles?
El Guapo | 5:00 PM on 02.24.2008 13 comments

Look at me, I’m a statistical improbability. But instead of winning the lottery or some other fun shit, I have bricked three consoles. I’ve seen the RROD twice and now I’m down a PS3. What the hell?

Before you go and say some shit like it’s my environment or something I am doing, you should know that I am ridiculously careful with my electronics, especially after my first red ring. Also, making me positive it isn’t the place I live/keep my systems I moved houses in between the bricking of my 360s and the recent death of my PS3. Every one of my systems has been well ventilated, never left on overnight, etc.

I have a problem that is prevalent enough to be on Sony’s support page. My PS3 now refuses to play any and all discs. Yes, not only the Blu-Ray but DVD, and CDs too! A Google search pulls up others who have had the same problem (the sound goes out on the game you’re playing, you restart and, goodbye). Anyone else experienced this?

I guess I’m just unlucky. However, all this has prompted me to wonder, why am I supposed to be happy that all they are doing is fixing the damn thing for free? I mean, it is not a huge inconvenience to me. Yet, why I paid for the damn thing to play games on it, and I’m going to get a new one in a week. No big deal right? Except how come that’s all I get, what I should have had all along? It’s not like Sony lacks the funds to just ship me a new one before I ship the old one back. That’s what happened with my DS. Oh yeah, the DS, I almost forgot about that. I had a dead space in the corner of my touch screen, maybe two weeks before the warranty ran out. Nintendo customer service took my credit card info and sent me a new one. All I had to do was send the broken one back and they never charged me a thing. This is the one area where I would love to see Microsoft and Sony emulate those crazies.

So now a Sunday afternoon that was supposed to be lazily spent playing games now finds me too damn pissed off to pick up a controller. What would you do? Just say “oh well” and play some 360? Demand free shit from Sony? Paint your fingernails black, dye your hair and cry? Bah.

This is sorta like the kid who kept buying all these pets and they all died on him. I guess consoles don't like you for some reason.

Bacon always helps. I bet PoloGuy could assist you.

I'm unlucky because whenever I try out something new, it never goes the way it does for absolutely everyone else. I could talk about it for hours, but just as an example I find it very difficult to take the claims of the Linux fanbase to its stability and wide compatibility seriously based on my own experiences.

i've had the rrod once, and my wii is broke for the second time now and by the time i get it back from nintendo, brawl will have already been out for a few weeks.

i'm not so happy either.

I have to be the luckiest motherfucker ever. I sometimes leave my 360 on all day and nothing happens to it. I had disc read-errors, and it did eat my Rock Band (I got it fixed for free at a local movie rental shop) but that was fixed really easy. I just bought a disc that cleans the laser inside and it's been working fine ever since.

And your PS3 broke! Those are never supposed to break.

I just wanted to let you know that we are sorry El Guapo for your loss. So the boys and I chipped in, and we got you a little something.

i'm to scared to even look at my 360 after going through 2 already :S and my ps3 has already started to act up.

I think I left my PS3 and 360 on for a week each, next to each other. And my DS is in the bottom of my backpack, scratched to hell... still works though.

That's weird. I mean, we've all heard of RROD's and stuff, but this is the first time I think I've heard of a PS3 failing.

I'm so stoked about El Guapo joining Dtoid. I had no idea he played video games... Do you get high speed interwebs down there in Mexico?

Si Jefe, many peasants had to die for my cable connection.

 about me

I'm into pretty much anything that is awesome, but I have the attention span of a brain-damaged chimp so I am usually playing five games at once and 3 or 4 aren't anywhere near current. I love me some RPG and a good fighter and I have recently gotten into FPS thanks to the 360. Typically I steer clear of online gaming because I am a very very angry person, but lately because I have so little money, Gamefly rules for that reason. I started playing games when I was 4 years old with Mario on the NES, I sucked. Didn't really start liking games until the N64 when I was finally able to beat my older brother at something (Killer Instinct Gold).
