ArkCo News #23 -Early Access!!

What a week!! When Edge of Space Greenlit back on May 1st, the community exploded, and we couldn’t believe what a great response we had to the game. The support was amazing, and we had so many people rushing in to congratulate us. Last Friday, the 28th of June, we launched on Steam Early Access. To say that this last week has been crazy for us is an understatement. The game has done better than we could have hoped, and we have been humbled by the response to the game, and to us as a team. We have been delighted by the feedback pouring in from all of the new players, helping us to continue to make EoS the best it can be. It’s going to be even more exciting for us now as we roll out the new content and features, and watch everyone experience it for the first time. With one patch already out since getting on Early Access, we’re moving right along with squishing the worst bugs that crept up on Steam. Overall, the launch went very well, Arkdrop didn’t even explode, so we are definitely grateful for that as well.

On the community side, the team is planning some late summer fun in the form of another event. It will be a blast to get all of our new players involved, and give everyone a chance to win some free games to boot! This event is going to be a different direction for us, so we hope that we get plenty of feedback when it’s done, and that everyone has a good time with it. We encourage everyone to sign up for Divisions before the event hits, you can find the signup here:

Divisions Signup Thread

We’re going to be doing more frequent community polls in the coming weeks as well, as a way to get to know our new members and hear your thoughts and ideas on the community as a whole. We’ve got some fun ideas, but we know you guys have even more, so we look forward to that feedback and really ramping up the community experience.

Tonight we will be livestreaming for the first time since getting on Early Access, so we’re excited to talk to everyone, hang out, and answer all of your questions. If you haven’t already, we encourage everyone to follow our channel to get notifications when we stream. The fun kicks off at 7PM Eastern time on our channel:

We can’t thank everyone enough for the amazing support and feedback over the last week, and we’re more excited for the future of Edge of Space than ever before. Stay awesome, and we’ll see you next time for ArkCo News!   read

ArkCo News #21 - It Keeps Getting Better!

This last couple of weeks have been a whirlwind for the team, working to re-integrate everything back into the game after the Rebirth patch. We're very pleased with the way things are coming together, and we think the community will agree. So many exciting features are close to completion now, with more being added to that list every day. One thing that players are taking note of is the visual improvements to the game. Our artists continue to amaze us and the community with better work all the time, and Edge of Space is taking on a far more polished look.

On the community side, we are working on several fun projects for the summer. The community team is hard at work on planning another event, as well as a surprise that we won't give spoilers on just yet. Let's just say we think it will be a nice little perk to being around the forums. We're excited to see how everyone reacts to the summer event this year, as we're going in a different direction than previous events. Keep an eye on the forums for information in the coming weeks!

Tonight's livestream should be plenty of fun as well, with a preview of the upcoming new patch. Work has been going so quickly, and we have plenty to show off. The power grid is undergoing changes, as well as new features coming into the game. Be sure to come and check it out tonight at 7PM Eastern at:

ArkCo News #20 - Full Speed Ahead!

ArkCo News #20 - Full Speed Ahead!

With the Rebirth patch a couple of weeks behind us now, the team has been working at a phenomenal pace, already pushing 2 more patches, and with a 3rd on its way. The game's death system is now in place, introducing players to consequences for dying for the first time. Luckily, everything a player needs to survive is craftable, meaning that if you are paying attention, you can avoid losing your items when you die. The system involves crafting and binding yourself to a cryopod, and using cryorods to control the number of lives you have. The max number of rods is 10, and if they are not replaced, the 11th death would result in most of a players inventory being dropped.

With yet another patch imminent, we can definitely say that things are coming together much more quickly now. Testing on the Rebirth patch has gone very well, with plenty of community members pitching in to report bugs and help us track them down. We are thrilled to have so much feedback available to us to keep polishing and improving the game. With the patches coming together well now, Steam integration is now under development. We know everyone will be happy to hear that, as it brings us one step closer to being able to launch on Steam. While we still have a ways to go, we're excited to be getting started on it!

This afternoon we will be livestreaming at 2PM Eastern time to show off the latest patch, so be sure to check that out! With new features being added so fast, we really want to encourage everyone to keep up with the news and announcements. Thanks for reading, and we'll see you next time for ArkCo News!   read

ArkCo News #19 - Rebirth!

It's been awhile since our last issue of ArkCo News, but the team has been locked deep in the labs, working to bring out the latest patch. After a wait that left some of our ArkCoNauts on the brink of insanity, we have finally done it! The Rebirth patch rolled out earlier this week, and players were left quite shocked by all the changes. Rebirth was more than just a typical patch to the game, it amounted to a near complete re-write of all the code, setting us up for a much easier and more streamlined integration of the rest of the game's upcoming features. We'll take a bit here, and outline a few of the most striking changes.

This patch marked the first time that Edge of Space has been playable in true singleplayer mode, without having to connect to localhost. Players have been giddy over the simplicity and ease of booting up the game, clicking singleplayer, and hopping in to start exploring their new world. Along with this change comes the first time that locally saved characters can move between maps. Characters, and their inventories can be used across as many maps as a player chooses. This is to prepare for later server functionality, where a server host will have the choice to let people onto their server with previous characters, OR lock the server to new characters only.

The UI is another massive improvement, featuring much more intuitive controls. Switching between tools now is as simple as pressing Q or E, allowing you to scroll quickly and easily between anything equipped to your toolbar. Equipped items are changed via the inventory screen, by adding items to the toolbar slots. Mining has become easier and more convenient as well. Rather than having to hold down right click to mine back tiles, or left click to mine foreground, changing modes is now as simple and direct as a single right click, even while holding down the left click and continuing to work. The player response to it has been very positive so far, though we realize it takes some getting used to.

The best news for our fans however, is that from here on out we can return to our much shorter dev cycles, and far more frequent patching. We have already pushed a full bug fix patch, and a hotfix patch in the short couple of days since Rebirth was released. Players can now craft cryopods and bind themselves to them, armor is back in and craftable, and the first parts of the new death system have been implemented. Features that were still under construction are already on their way back in, and we can now focus on finishing the re-integration of those features as well as continuing to add new ones. We really want to say again that we appreciate everyone's patience over the last couple of months, you guys have been amazing! We are looking forward to being much less silent in the weeks to come! Stay awesome, and we'll see you next time for the ArkCo News!   read

ArkCo News #18 - WE DID IT!

ArkCo News #19 -WE DID IT!!

This has been an incredible week for us here at Handyman. We did it!! We got through Greenlight! To say that we were all completely shocked by the announcement is an understatement, it's still just sinking in for the team. Needless to say, we've been busier than ever, but it's an amazing feeling! We want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone that voted for Edge of Space and supported us, we owe this all to you. The best is still yet to come, and it's wonderful to see the even more rapid growth in the community now!

Our celebrations haven't slowed us down, and we are working hard to complete work on the Rebirth patch and get it out to our players. We will be showing plenty of it on tonight's Livestream, so if you aren't around at 7PM EDT, be sure to catch the recording of it! We can honestly say this takes Edge of Space to a whole new level. There is very little we've left untouched, and we are very excited to hear the community's thoughts on what we've done. This is a tiny glimpse of just one of MANY exciting changes to the game:

As long as we don't blow up the labs, everyone will be exploring the new patch in the next week or two. We know it's been a long wait, but it will be well worth it. We very much appreciate everyone's patience over this last month. It's awesome to have such a supportive community!

On the community side of things, we definitely want to encourage everyone to come to the forums and get involved. Come and hang out in the IRC and meet us! We are always happy to see new faces, and answer questions about the game. Stay awesome you guys, and we'll see you next time for the ArkCo Weekly News!   read

ArkCo News #17 - We're Doing Science, and We're Still Alive!

ArkCo News #17 - We're Doing Science, and We're Still Alive!

This last couple of weeks, we've talked a bit about the game undergoing massive changes. This week, we bring you an exclusive look at where some of those changes are being made, and we think players will be quite astonished to see it! Without going in depth and giving TOO many spoilers while things are still changing, we'll just leave you with a brand new screenshot, showcasing quite a few things for the keen observer. Get your speculation caps on, ladies and gentlemen, and have a look at this:

If any of our readers are still with us, and haven't been TOO completely spellbound by the screenie, we want to give a couple of reminders this week. The first of those is about Greenlight. We know many of our fans and players were pretty bummed out that we didn't get picked, but things are far from dismal. 18 games were selected, and that means a HUGE jump up the ranks for Edge of Space. We're close enough to taste it, guys, please keep up the amazing support and keep those votes coming in!

Secondly we want to remind everyone to get in and sign up for the Spring gaming event. We will have PvP Minecraft, Terraria, Edge of Space building contests, plenty of giveaways and an IRC quiz. It's gonna be a blast, and we have great prizes just waiting to be won. We even tossed 5 Edge of Space keys into the prize pool! If you've been waiting for a chance to score a copy, sharpen your
favorite sword and get in on the fun. We're looking forward to hanging out with everyone and seeing who comes out on top! You can get all the info and sign up here:

The next couple of weeks are going to be pretty exciting around here, and we hope that we'll see more new faces around the community. Stay awesome, ArkCoNauts, and we'll see you next week with the ArkCo Weekly news!   read

ArkCo News #16 - Staying busy!

Hey ArkCoNauts! Another busy week is behind us, and we continue to work on the next big patch to the game. So much work is going into it, but it will definitely pay off, and we look forward to getting it into the hands of players in a few weeks. We want the game to look at feel a lot more polished, and be set up for more of the upcoming features, even if it means a couple more quiet weeks on the development side of things. It will be one of our longer patch cycles, but the community is always wonderfully patient, and eager to see what's next for the game. We are very excited about the features we are getting in this time as well! The response to the current build has been very positive, and it is definitely starting to show more balance for new players. Making early crafting easier was absolutely the way to go, and players seem pleased with that, as well as the addition of basic torches and a tutorial in game.

We are 4 days from the next Greenlight pull on April 17th, so we really want to encourage supporters to get out there and vote, and get others to vote! We need to keep the pressure on so we can make it through. Once we're on Steam, we have a special surprise planned for the community to thank everyone for their ongoing help and getting us to where we are today. We're almost there, just keep up the good work! To get people even more excited, we have released a brand new teaser trailer. Get out there and share it, it's awesome!

On the community side things are quite the opposite of quiet. We have already announced our big Spring Showdown gaming event, and opened signups! Get in there and join the fun! That's not all we've got up our sleeves. We have also just revealed a massive expansion to the Divisions experience and we can't wait to see the reaction to that. Ever want to level up in a community, and
earn special rewards and privileges? Ever want to JOIN the corporations involved in the game's back story? Then you've come to the right place! Things are definitely going to get interesting around here. Show us what you've got, ArkCoNauts!

We are looking forward to a busy but rewarding rest of the month, and we hope everyone will be
along for the ride. Stay awesome, and we'll see you next week for the ArkCo Weekly News!   read

ArkCo Weekly News #15 - Back To Business!

With PAX in the rearview mirror, it's back to business here at ArkCo. We had an amazing time, met so many great people, and most importantly, it was a tremendous learning experience. The most important lesson a developer can learn, is that you can never be afraid to go back and rework something to make it even better. Watching people interact with the game, and enjoy it was awesome, one of those moments where it really hits you that you've made a GAME. Since getting home, we already deployed another massive patch to the game. While a bit later than we had hoped, it is already proving popular with the community.

Since the beginning, we have been adamant about spending time with the community, and listening to their feedback. This patch definitely shows that in action. Many players felt that the learning curve was too steep, and we came to realize that they were right. While still embracing how far we want people to be able to GO in our "scaling difficulty" systems, we brought the beginner level aspects down to a far more reasonable level. In crafting this means that early schematics now use raw materials, pushing the need to refine to tier 2 schematics. You now craft a refining kit when you need to start using it, rather than being confronted with refining and random stats right out of the gate. Our power system will be getting an overhaul as well, bringing in simple torches that people can use to explore, rather than the more advanced means of lighting. As you progress, you will find that there are added benefits to powering things through the grid, but those will be opt-in benefits to the player willing to go the extra mile and delve into what PIOS can do. Chests are now scattered through the world in place of the pet eggs, which offer not only pet drops, but also rare loot, cosmetic gear, and materials.

On the community side, we're gearing up for a Spring event in April, and will be releasing details on that very soon. We look forward to some great gaming, and the chance to toss some fun prizes at the winners! Additionally, our Divisions will be getting a big push, and the chance for community members to actually rank up on the forums and in the community! Dedicated members will be able to shoot for a coveted Division Leader title, which will gain them rights to helping select games for future events and much more! We're really excited to see where this goes, and we hope that it's something people have a great time with.

The upcoming month will be a busier and more quite one on the dev side of things, as the team implements the framework for many of the game's features. We found that some of the code we were pleased with before is now actually holding us back, so back to the drawing board we go. While the next patch will be several weeks away, we look forward to a much more stable and solid build for us to keep pouring in the features we have planned in the future.

We want to thank everyone again for the awesome support and the many Greenlight votes and comments that our fans have left. Please keep up the good work, keep spreading the word, and we will make it to Steam soon! We want to give a special shoutout this week to King Foom and the D-toid community, who have really embraced the game, and the team, and have shown tremendous support for us all around. We are truly blessed to have such a fantastic following! Stay awesome and we'll see you next week for the ArkCo Weekly News!   read

ArkCo Weekly News #14 - Space Madness!

This week is all about PAX. The team is bordering on space madness as we enter the final 4 days before leaving. We are jamming tons of new content and features into the game, as well as preparing on the community side. We are so excited to meet fans in person, and we will have some goodies to hand out at the booth, so if you’re attending, be sure to come and find us! We do have a few things to share before diving back into work this week.

Tonight we will be livestreaming, after a 2 week hiatus. We’ve had to focus quite a bit harder, and so we want to be sure to bring fans up to date on the state of the game and what’s coming as we head off to PAX. We should have plenty of fun things to show, assuming nothing blows up before going live. If anyone spots a zombie on cam this evening, rest assured, it’s only Jake! We’ll be starting at 7PM EST, on our Twitch channel. You can find us here:

We are thrilled with how many votes are pouring into Greenlight now, and we want to thank everyone for the continued support. Please keep up the amazing work! We can make this happen, and Jake’s hair is on the line! Remember, if we make the next pull, he will be appearing on livestream with Destructoid to shave it all! Spread the word, haunt your family and friends, and help us make the next round.

Lastly, this week we want to encourage everyone to keep a close eye on the forums and community as we bring out more exciting news. The community team is hard at work to bring more fun to the forum experience, and laying the groundwork for an upcoming event in the near future! Be sure to watch for details on that in the next couple of weeks. This is definitely an exciting time for us here at ArkCo, and we are happy that so many people are joining the community every day! ArkCo Weekly News #13 - Crunch Time!

ArkCo Weekly News #13 - Crunch Time!!

This week has been absolutely staggering in terms of growth for the community, and as a team we are tremendously grateful for the outpouring of support and love for the game! Starting with our brand new game trailer coming out this week, it has been a non-stop flood of new faces throughout the community, and all of our sites. It has been amazing to see so many rally behind Edge of Space and throw their support behind Greenlight. The madness hasn't stopped there! Earlier this week we also put out a new patch, which introduced a re-structuring of crafting including schematics that don't require refined materials. We felt that this would give new players a much more balanced and gradual introduction to how crafting works, and allow them to get established in the game world before moving on to higher tier schematics. We have also put in place the background systems for MANY new aspects of the game which will be implemented in the near future.

This weekend we are also launching the first test of our 3 day beta key system. Players can snag a 3 day test key, and enjoy the game for free for the weekend! Along with this comes a very much anticipated announcement: We WILL be offering Steam keys to our pre-order customers if and when we get through Greenlight! We are thrilled to let everyone know that it's safe to buy now, and that they don't have to worry about having to purchase again if/when Edge of Space goes to Steam.

There is already so much excitement here at ArkCo, and we have only scratched the surface in terms of how much is coming ahead of and during PAX! We are eagerly looking forward to meeting our fellow game devs, and tons of awesome fans. If all goes to plan, we hope to get in one final livestream next weekend before the team hits the road, and we promise it will be worth the 2 week hiatus! So much work is being poured into the game, and there will be more than plenty to show off.

We see this as just the beginning of great things to come, and once again we want to thank the many, many fans and supporters who have been pouring votes into Greenlight and bringing us that much closer to our goal. Please keep up the amazing work getting the word out! This is definitely a month to keep an eye on the forums and the community for the many upcoming announcements we will be sharing soon!   read

ArkCo News Special Update!

To say that March is going to be crazy for us here at ArkCo is an understatement! We are gearing up for our appearance at PAX, as well as ramping up development on Edge of Space. At our livestream with Destructoid last week, we had a big announcement in the form of a challenge to the community: If Edge of Space can get through the next pull for Greenlight, lead developer Jacob Crane will shave his hair, and his beard! No more shaggy for "Lord Shaggy!" King Foom immediately jumped at the opportunity, and snatched up the right to livestream the shaving, should the goal be met! We need everyone out spreading the word, to get the challenge out there and help us finally push over the top and get on Steam!

We are also very happy to announce our first Test Key Weekend next weekend! We are going to invite anyone that wants to test the game for a weekend to come and join us March 8th-10th to experience the game for the weekend, FREE! While the game doesn't lend itself to making a demo, because of the very rapid development, we felt this was a great solution, and will allow people to see how the game plays for them!

The madness doesn't even stop there, far from it! We have also just announced our first ArkCoNaut of the Month, thanking a special fan each month for their contributions to our community. Winners will be granted a special forum tag, as well as a Collectors' Edition copy of Edge of Space. We want to recognize our amazing fans, out there every day helping make the community the wonderful experience it is. It was not easy to pick one from so many, and we feel truly blessed to have such great people around us.

There is so much coming up that we can't even share yet, but suffice it to say that it's going to be VERY exciting! This is a very good time for everyone to get in and sign up for our forums, to be the first to hear everything that's coming.

With everything getting so very busy, Jake wanted to take the time to share the following with the community:

Hey everyone! It has been a crazy couple of weeks and things have been progressing well. We are now getting our heads down into the nitty gritty for PAX. For those of you who do not know, it's a big deal and we will be there with our own shiny booth showing off EoS!

So we have announced that we are going to not do the stream this week. This is because of all the preparations for a really hard push for PAX are being made. March is going to be a really focused time and that means you might see less of the crew around as we are tucking in to really push forward.

As it stands we might still stream next Saturday, but patches and patch schedules are going to be as soon as we feel it's ready. Keep your eyes out as various patches will be coming through.

We are going to be putting in all of our might to make all ArkCo recruits proud during PAX showing. During this time we are going to need YOUR help. Since we can not get out as much, we need you
making videos, getting active, and getting others active. It's going to be a tough few weeks for us and we ask you to bear with us as we work our brains dead!

Thanks for reading our somewhat extended version of the news, and stay awesome!! See you guys in space!   read

ArkCo Weekly News #12 - Holopets, At Your Service!

ArkCo Weekly News #12

At ArkCo, we definitely love our surprises! Just two days ago we rolled out our newest patch, which was primarily increasing the performance of the game through Paul's coding wizardry. Still, we couldn't resist sneaking in a few goodies, such as a brand new spawn animation, spawn pod, and even the first 3 holopets that have abilities beyond just looking cute! The "firefox" pet has already become a community favorite, lighting the way in dark places and helping ArkCoNauts venture deeper into the dark caves where resources are more likely to hide. Along with him come our nurse cat, who heals you along the way, and our beetle, who keeps you charged with plenty of energy as you explore. They are just a glimpse into some of the ways pets will help their masters.

For our question of the week, we asked Jake to talk about what else we might see from Edge of Space's little companions.

Q:Can you tell us a bit more about the pets, and what players might
see from them in the future?

A: Jake: Holopets will come with a variety of slight bonuses to help the player along. As seen, we currently have 3 test pets out that actually serve purposes. Other kinds of purpose that they can offer could be buffing various stats on the player, procing effects, group buffs, ect. Holopets are meant to be supportive but not necessarily crazy powerful additions. They are an extension of a utility, because sometimes its nice to get that little extra bit of energy/health/light/exposure resistance etc, when you need it.

On the community side this week, we are gearing up for a special livestream event Monday night at 7PM EST, when we appear on Destructoid's livestream! We have cooked up a wonderful surprise to show off, and we also have a very special announcement that will be made during the stream. Both should prove to be very interesting, and more than a little crazy, but that's the Handyman way!

This week we want to take time to remind everyone about Steam Greenlight. Please don't forget about it! This battle is far from over, and every single vote counts. We're gaining momentum, but we have to rise to the challenge and hold that level of interest. Vote, get your family and friends to vote, and don't let up! We need the community behind us now more than ever. You can find the Greenlight page here:

Keep your eye on the community this next week, as several big announcements come your way! Thanks for reading, and stay awesome!   read
