What a week!! When Edge of Space Greenlit back on May 1st, the community exploded, and we couldn’t believe what a great response we had to the game. The support was amazing, and we had so many people rushing in to congratulate us. Last Friday, the 28th of June, we launched on Steam Early Access. To say that this last week has been crazy for us is an understatement. The game has done better than we could have hoped, and we have been humbled by the response to the game, and to us as a team. We have been delighted by the feedback pouring in from all of the new players, helping us to continue to make EoS the best it can be. It’s going to be even more exciting for us now as we roll out the new content and features, and watch everyone experience it for the first time. With one patch already out since getting on Early Access, we’re moving right along with squishing the worst bugs that crept up on Steam. Overall, the launch went very well, Arkdrop didn’t even explode, so we are definitely grateful for that as well.
On the community side, the team is planning some late summer fun in the form of another event. It will be a blast to get all of our new players involved, and give everyone a chance to win some free games to boot! This event is going to be a different direction for us, so we hope that we get plenty of feedback when it’s done, and that everyone has a good time with it. We encourage everyone to sign up for Divisions before the event hits, you can find the signup here:
We’re going to be doing more frequent community polls in the coming weeks as well, as a way to get to know our new members and hear your thoughts and ideas on the community as a whole. We’ve got some fun ideas, but we know you guys have even more, so we look forward to that feedback and really ramping up the community experience.
Tonight we will be livestreaming for the first time since getting on Early Access, so we’re excited to talk to everyone, hang out, and answer all of your questions. If you haven’t already, we encourage everyone to follow our channel to get notifications when we stream. The fun kicks off at 7PM Eastern time on our channel: http://www.twitch.tv/edgeofspace
We can’t thank everyone enough for the amazing support and feedback over the last week, and we’re more excited for the future of Edge of Space than ever before. Stay awesome, and we’ll see you next time for ArkCo News!
This last couple of weeks have been a whirlwind for the team, working to re-integrate everything back into the game after the Rebirth patch. We're very pleased with the way things are coming together, and we think the community will agree. So many exciting features are close to completion now, with more being added to that list every day. One thing that players are taking note of is the visual improvements to the game. Our artists continue to amaze us and the community with better work all the time, and Edge of Space is taking on a far more polished look.
On the community side, we are working on several fun projects for the summer. The community team is hard at work on planning another event, as well as a surprise that we won't give spoilers on just yet. Let's just say we think it will be a nice little perk to being around the forums. We're excited to see how everyone reacts to the summer event this year, as we're going in a different direction than previous events. Keep an eye on the forums for information in the coming weeks!
Tonight's livestream should be plenty of fun as well, with a preview of the upcoming new patch. Work has been going so quickly, and we have plenty to show off. The power grid is undergoing changes, as well as new features coming into the game. Be sure to come and check it out tonight at 7PM Eastern at:
With the Rebirth patch a couple of weeks behind us now, the team has been working at a phenomenal pace, already pushing 2 more patches, and with a 3rd on its way. The game's death system is now in place, introducing players to consequences for dying for the first time. Luckily, everything a player needs to survive is craftable, meaning that if you are paying attention, you can avoid losing your items when you die. The system involves crafting and binding yourself to a cryopod, and using cryorods to control the number of lives you have. The max number of rods is 10, and if they are not replaced, the 11th death would result in most of a players inventory being dropped.
With yet another patch imminent, we can definitely say that things are coming together much more quickly now. Testing on the Rebirth patch has gone very well, with plenty of community members pitching in to report bugs and help us track them down. We are thrilled to have so much feedback available to us to keep polishing and improving the game. With the patches coming together well now, Steam integration is now under development. We know everyone will be happy to hear that, as it brings us one step closer to being able to launch on Steam. While we still have a ways to go, we're excited to be getting started on it!
This afternoon we will be livestreaming at 2PM Eastern time to show off the latest patch, so be sure to check that out! With new features being added so fast, we really want to encourage everyone to keep up with the news and announcements. Thanks for reading, and we'll see you next time for ArkCo News!
It's been awhile since our last issue of ArkCo News, but the team has been locked deep in the labs, working to bring out the latest patch. After a wait that left some of our ArkCoNauts on the brink of insanity, we have finally done it! The Rebirth patch rolled out earlier this week, and players were left quite shocked by all the changes. Rebirth was more than just a typical patch to the game, it amounted to a near complete re-write of all the code, setting us up for a much easier and more streamlined integration of the rest of the game's upcoming features. We'll take a bit here, and outline a few of the most striking changes.
This patch marked the first time that Edge of Space has been playable in true singleplayer mode, without having to connect to localhost. Players have been giddy over the simplicity and ease of booting up the game, clicking singleplayer, and hopping in to start exploring their new world. Along with this change comes the first time that locally saved characters can move between maps. Characters, and their inventories can be used across as many maps as a player chooses. This is to prepare for later server functionality, where a server host will have the choice to let people onto their server with previous characters, OR lock the server to new characters only.
The UI is another massive improvement, featuring much more intuitive controls. Switching between tools now is as simple as pressing Q or E, allowing you to scroll quickly and easily between anything equipped to your toolbar. Equipped items are changed via the inventory screen, by adding items to the toolbar slots. Mining has become easier and more convenient as well. Rather than having to hold down right click to mine back tiles, or left click to mine foreground, changing modes is now as simple and direct as a single right click, even while holding down the left click and continuing to work. The player response to it has been very positive so far, though we realize it takes some getting used to.
The best news for our fans however, is that from here on out we can return to our much shorter dev cycles, and far more frequent patching. We have already pushed a full bug fix patch, and a hotfix patch in the short couple of days since Rebirth was released. Players can now craft cryopods and bind themselves to them, armor is back in and craftable, and the first parts of the new death system have been implemented. Features that were still under construction are already on their way back in, and we can now focus on finishing the re-integration of those features as well as continuing to add new ones. We really want to say again that we appreciate everyone's patience over the last couple of months, you guys have been amazing! We are looking forward to being much less silent in the weeks to come! Stay awesome, and we'll see you next time for the ArkCo News!
This has been an incredible week for us here at Handyman. We did it!! We got through Greenlight! To say that we were all completely shocked by the announcement is an understatement, it's still just sinking in for the team. Needless to say, we've been busier than ever, but it's an amazing feeling! We want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone that voted for Edge of Space and supported us, we owe this all to you. The best is still yet to come, and it's wonderful to see the even more rapid growth in the community now!
Our celebrations haven't slowed us down, and we are working hard to complete work on the Rebirth patch and get it out to our players. We will be showing plenty of it on tonight's Livestream, so if you aren't around at 7PM EDT, be sure to catch the recording of it! We can honestly say this takes Edge of Space to a whole new level. There is very little we've left untouched, and we are very excited to hear the community's thoughts on what we've done. This is a tiny glimpse of just one of MANY exciting changes to the game:
As long as we don't blow up the labs, everyone will be exploring the new patch in the next week or two. We know it's been a long wait, but it will be well worth it. We very much appreciate everyone's patience over this last month. It's awesome to have such a supportive community!
On the community side of things, we definitely want to encourage everyone to come to the forums and get involved. Come and hang out in the IRC and meet us! We are always happy to see new faces, and answer questions about the game. Stay awesome you guys, and we'll see you next time for the ArkCo Weekly News!
ArkCo News #17 - We're Doing Science, and We're Still Alive!
This last couple of weeks, we've talked a bit about the game undergoing massive changes. This week, we bring you an exclusive look at where some of those changes are being made, and we think players will be quite astonished to see it! Without going in depth and giving TOO many spoilers while things are still changing, we'll just leave you with a brand new screenshot, showcasing quite a few things for the keen observer. Get your speculation caps on, ladies and gentlemen, and have a look at this:
If any of our readers are still with us, and haven't been TOO completely spellbound by the screenie, we want to give a couple of reminders this week. The first of those is about Greenlight. We know many of our fans and players were pretty bummed out that we didn't get picked, but things are far from dismal. 18 games were selected, and that means a HUGE jump up the ranks for Edge of Space. We're close enough to taste it, guys, please keep up the amazing support and keep those votes coming in!
Secondly we want to remind everyone to get in and sign up for the Spring gaming event. We will have PvP Minecraft, Terraria, Edge of Space building contests, plenty of giveaways and an IRC quiz. It's gonna be a blast, and we have great prizes just waiting to be won. We even tossed 5 Edge of Space keys into the prize pool! If you've been waiting for a chance to score a copy, sharpen your
favorite sword and get in on the fun. We're looking forward to hanging out with everyone and seeing who comes out on top! You can get all the info and sign up here:
The next couple of weeks are going to be pretty exciting around here, and we hope that we'll see more new faces around the community. Stay awesome, ArkCoNauts, and we'll see you next week with the ArkCo Weekly news!
