Jeffgate: Where Do We Go From Here?
Ed Cetera | 12:09 PM on 11.30.2007 9 comments

They deleted the video. They deleted the Kane and Lynch banners. They locked down as many threads concerning the drama as possible. Last, but not least, they deactivated the e-mail address. We may never know the complete truth surrounding the fate of Jeff Gerstmann.

I have been a fan of Gamespot for many years. I remember when Gamespot had a notorious reputation for being the most honest and critical reviewers, with Greg Kasavin giving games such as Soul Calibur II and Chaos Theory middle-8 ratings when everyone else gave 9s and 10s.

2007 remains a turbulent year for Gamespot. Aside from Greg leaving, Gamespot changed the review system from individual decimals to .5 increments (to the chagrin of longtime fans). Gamespot, owned by CNet, had ads for years, with the ads more in-your-face this year (especially with Kane and Lynch) than before.

While it may or may not be true that Jeff was fired due to the review (we still don't know for sure if Jeff "resigned" or not), one thing is for sure: Destructoid is the last robot standing.

I used to buy magazines such as Electronic Gaming Monthly, but I got sick and tired of the tardy news reports, the outdated previews, and the corrupt reviews standard in the magazines . So, I turned to the websites such as Gamespot for my reviews.

Now, we're all stuck in a maze. The last shred of honesty among game journalism has fallen. I want to know some things:
1.) Will Destructoid face the same pitfalls that Gamespot has fallen into?
2.) Nobody's buying DToid, are they?
3.) Where Do We Go From Here? Is there any other free website that offers unbiased reviews without outside influence?
4.) I want the truth: Is Jeff still there? Did he "resign"? If Jeff was fired due to Eidos, then why were the Kane and Lynch ads removed anyway?

Is this post awesome? Vote it up!

What are you talking about? The video review is on GameTrailers, banners don't tell you anything (after a review like that you can be sure they pulled their advertisement and will no longer support gamespot), and to know the truth all you have to do is ask the guy. He will reappear somewhere, people like him.

And you MUST be new if you ask if Dtoid will face this "pitfall." So at this point I'd like for you to go look at the reviews on this site.

I've always hated GameSpot (and Jeff) since that douche bag gave a Tonky Hawk game a 10. Anyway, I don't go there for their reviews as much as their news stories. I'm sure there will be plenty of morally bankrupt game sites that will hire him on the spot (pun intended).

But Tonky Hawk deserves a 10 with that Tonky walk and that Tonky talk!

I never liked it cause I felt their were biased against Nintendo, this proves it I suppose (the biased-ness).

Yeah I prefer Tonky Hawk over Tony Hawk anyday, but he's not as great as the 'Honky tonk" Man though.

When was the last time Eidos made a good game (besides Hitman)?

@Ron

It's understandable why he questioned it. That's a Rev Anthony "3".

If it's Rev giving it a "3", then you're basically telling people it's a "10".

Remember?

:P

Rev needs to keep a handy guide when reading his reviews to avoid this confusion in the futurez.

Right now, the reviews on Dtoid are great. What I was trying to say earlier was that I wonder if, five or so years from now, outside influences will cause reviews will start to change and face the rest of the problems Gamespot is facing right now.
