February NARP events

Hey DtoidSF!

[embed]192825:35802[/embed]

February is the month of LOVE!!! You know what I love? Meeting up with all you awesome community members in SF! (Not to mention Snickers ice cream and SSF4) Anyway, as always we have a list of great events for you to take part in! Come meet up with your Dtoid Army soldiers as we start to take over the world!

What: Geeks vs Geeks Trivia Night
Where: Fly Bar
When: Monday, Feb 7th, 7:30 PM

Are you a geek? Do you know what Oz's band name was in Buffy? How about who's singer's head was in an entire episode of Futurama? Well, on Feb 7th, Geeks vs Geeks is having a trivia night over at Fly Bar, and it would be awesome if we could get a DtoidSF team to represent! And fear not, there actually are prizes awarded for the winners :D.

What: Super Nerd Night!
Where: Rogue Ale's Public House
When: Tuesday, Feb 8, 7:00 PM

From the facebook invite:

"Super Nerd Night is the monthly gathering of the geeks at Rogue, where the usual bar crowd is replaced with a mini-convention of comic book, video game, role-playing game and general nerd culture aficionados. Super Nerd Night has mutated from a simple video game tournament between friends into an all-encompassing meet and geek."

Many more DtoidSFers have been showing up to this event and meeting lots of cool, new people! So if you haven't made it out to one (like me) try to show up! :D

What: The Room Midnight Showing!
Where: Piedmont Theater in Oakland
When: Saturday, Feb 17th, 12:00 AM

The Room. In a movie theater. Spoons.

You need to make sure to join in on this, I promise if you have not experienced The Room, you havent lived. The Oscars nominees like Black Swan are crap when compared to this masterpiece of a movie. Tommy Wiseau is a fine Shakepearean actor and brilliant director.

Make sure to join in the emailer to organize the car pool trips and such. OMG THIS WILL BE THE BEST NARP EVER!

Anyway, that's whats planned this month for DtoidSF! As per usual, join our emailer, and follow us on facebook and twitter! Hope to see you at an event!   read

December NARP events

HO HO HO!

[embed]188669:34467[/embed]

Hey DtoidSF! Its getting chilly here in the East Bay, and what better way to fight off the cold than by meeting up with your fellow Dtoiders and having some awesome events! Below are some things that are planned for the month of December in and around San Francisco for you guys!

What: Kihten's Bday party
Where: Rogue Ales Public House
When: Dec 3rd at 8:00 pm

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KIHTEN! New DtoidSF member Krista just turned 27 this week, and to celebrate, she has invited all of DtoidSF to meet up at the Rogue Ales Public House starting at 8pm. A new hangout for the DtoidSF community, this place usually offers a monthly "Super Nerd Night" that we are starting to make our presence known <3.

On this Friday, we will meet there to eat, drink (homemade rootbeer floats!) and watch movies such as Scott Pilgrim and Dr. Horrible! So I hope to see you all there!

What: Umloud!
Where: DNA Lounge
When: Dec 9 at 7PM

UMLOUD! This is an AWESOME charity event that takes place every year to benefit the well known Child's Play Charity. This night involves people performing Rock Band songs on the main stage of DNA Lounge with full lights, smoke effects and and amazing sound system, all for charity. By going, not only will you be getting a great show, you will also have the opportunity to buy raffle tickets for awesome swag that has been donated by various game companies.

There will be also be a silent auction which will give you the chance to win some really awesome rare items that are too good to be merely raffled off. All this for only a $10 entrance to the event, the full proceeds of which go to benefit Child's Play. So check out more information at the Umloud website, and come rock out for charity! And if you buy your tickets online here, you can get two pieces of swag!

What: DtoidSF Holiday Celebration
Where: DtoidHQ
When Dec 18th

Finally, what would December be without a holiday celebration? Our community will be getting together to have a little holiday get-together on Dec 18th. The event will take place at Dtoid HQ, and we are planning on having a Secret Santa, wear our tackiest holiday sweaters, and play some holiday themed games! This party will be live streamed on the Justin.tv stream for the rest of the dtoid community to check out!

If you are interested in the holiday meetup, it is really important to join the emailer! You will need to sign up to get into the Secret Santa list!

These are all the events that are being planned for this month! Hope to see you guys at one, two, or ALL of them! If for some reason you cant make it out, though, HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

And dont forget to join the emailer, follow our facebook page and twitter, and check out the youtube channel for awesome community things!   read

October NARP events!

Hey guys!

Where did September go? September was an AWESOME month which brought us PAX and my birthday, but now its over. But thats ok, cause we have the amazing month of October to look forward to! And thus I bring you our planned events for this month! Its a big one!

What: Extra Life 24 hr Gaming Marathon
Where: South van Awesome
When: Oct 16-17th, 8am-8am!!!

As of now, there is one major event being planned, and thats the Extra Life Gaming Marathon. As you may or may not have heard, the Extra Life charity organization is one started by Sarcastic Gamer that puts raising money for charity our gamers' hands. Its an annual marathon in which we take donations to raise money for the local Children's Miracle hospital. Alex Sanderson and I are planning a 24 hour gaming marathon where we will take donations. This event will be on Oct. 16th and run from 8am to 8 am!

We have a variety of games and systems that we want to showcase throughout the day, which will include modern favorites such as Halo:Reach and Super Street Fighter 4 as well as retro games such as Ninja Gaiden and Chip and Dale's Rescue Rangers! 24 hours is a LONG time to have just one person gaming, so we are asking for the DtoidSF crew to come help out and game with us all day/night!

This event will be streamed online using Ustream, so the greater Destructoid community will be able to watch, join in, and donate money for charity! We are also hoping on giving away some swag and prizes throughout the night, so everyone should feel free to tune into the stream!

There will be tons more details about this the sooner it gets to the date, and the more finalized the plans get....but make sure to make it out to South van Awesome to help us get through the day! Also we need to spread the word early to those who want to support us before the event even starts...so tell your co-workers, friends, and family that you will be going to a charity event and are asking for their help!

Look forward to the Extra Life cblog coming later!!! Or start your donating at our donation page below

September NARP events

Hey SF!

Have you recovered from PAX yet? I haven't, but that doesnt mean I can stop planning the events for this month. There are two things that you definitely want to check out! Read about them below!

---------------------------------------

What: Learn To Play
Where: Euphrat Museum of Art at De Anza College, Cuperino, CA
When: September 17 at 5:30pm - September 18 at 9:00pm

Community member JohnPierre has worked really hard to set up a games as art exhibit called Learn to Play. Taken from the flier, Learn to Play is "an exhibition with games that challenge us to to look at who and what we are, or can be - so we can explore life directions driven by our choice and conscience" A good amount of Dtoiders are planning to check out this exhibit on the 17th, so you should too!

-------------------------------------

What: Tactix-con
Where: South van Awesome
When: Sept 18th 7:00pm

The benefit of managing a city group is that I can through my own birthday party!!! This is less of a NARP, then a TOTALLY APPARENT REASON PARTY, because I will be turning one year older on this day. This party will be similar to the Worldwide NARP party in that we will have Rock Band projected on the wall, lots of games to play, and lots of booze and good people to hang out with. I also promise a showing of the greatest movie of all time (for now) The Room, on our projector screen. Details about the party will be forthcoming in the emailer, so stay tuned!

Hope to see you at one of these events!   read

SF Worldwide NARP Recap

Hey guys!

Its been about a week since the worldwide NARP was held, and yes, its taken that long to recover. So many good times were had that night that we wanted to share some stories and pics with the greater Dtoid community! South van Awesome was the place to be in San Francisco that night, since the whole house was open to NARPage.

For a little description of the place, South van Awesome (SoVa) consists of two apartments in the same house full of Dtoid community and friends of Dtoid. The NARP at SoVa was split into two areas, Upper SoVa had fighting games on 360, classic Atari and NES games, as well as PS3 setup, while Lower SoVa was home to Rock Band on a projector, beverages, and a Wii setup. All in all, this was a very awesome and gaming centric party, where there was always an available console to play games on.

And many games were played! One of the most visited consoles was the Atari, for the purpose of playing Halo 2600 and Custer's Revenge. Yes, Custer's Revenge. In fact, early on, DtoidSF decided to hold a retro game contest to see which community member would get the highest score. Wired|GameLife's Chris Kohler had the highest score for a while, but our own CTZ quickly beat his score on only his second try.

He's a natural.

That score was largely untouched until one moment, late at night, when Crimeminister (host of Dtoid's Communicast) beat his score to the cheers of the crowd and became the Rape King of the NARP. With this title came some swag, which included a Dtoid "Become T-shirt", Puzzle Quest gem, and a copy of Hello Kitty Online. Jealous much?

The final high score for Custer's Revenge

Besides classic retro games, the DtoidSF crew spent lots of time playing more modern games, such as SSF4, Super Smash Bros Brawl, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, not to mention the constant Rock Banding that was happening throughout the entire night. Yours truly ended up passing out fairly early, but from what I heard, the partying kept going until 5 am, when everyone crashed on the various floors. (Sorry for locking your stuff in my room Manic Maverick!)

This was by far once of the most well attended and fun NARPs this year, and we had a blast organizing it. Thanks to all that helped make this NARP a huge succes! Special thanks also goes out Avery Wong and MattyP for taking great photos of the event, and to Nick Hutchins for the video work which will be posted up soon! Check below for some pics, but if you want to see the hundreds of other pics, go to Avery's site here

What: Worldwide NARP

Therefore, Saturda,y Aug 14th, we will have an epic NARP at South van Awesome. For those of you who dont know, South van Awesome is the most amazing place in the city, and home to yours truly :P. NARP recap: Distant Worlds and NARcade party

Hey all!

Its time for our NARP recap! This weekend, DtoidSF attended the Distant Worlds concert as put on by the SF Symphony. Having gone to the concert last year, I was excited to see what new things they had in store. First of, there were a couple of new songs added to the show, most importantly songs from Final Fantasy XIII and even a sneak peak and music from Final Fantasy XIV! The other new part about this concert is that there were lots more performances with vocalist Susan Calloway, who sung Melodies of Life and other FF songs that have had words written for them.

The SF Symphony performs Dancing Mad!

Just like last year, Nobuo Uematsu was in attendance, so most of the audience was enthralled to be in the same concert hall as him. But Nobuo's shining moment came through in the "encore"....Just like last year, they decided to do "One Winged Angel" as the encore song. However, this time there was no chorus on the stage to perform the song. Therefore, conductor Arnie Roth and Nobuo Uematsu himself transformed the audience into the largest chorus performing a FF song, by displaying the words on the huge projector screen.

Yes. You read that right. We did Final Fantasy karaoke with Nobuo Uematso and the SF Symphony. Amazing.

Anyway, this year, we had 11 people from DtoidSF show up to Distant Worlds, which is a great number of people :D So thanks to those who came out!

We look totally classy. Booya.

The next day, was our joint Sunnyvale Arcade/house party NARP down in San Jose! It started out with meeting up at Sunnyvale Golfland! We played lots of Blazblue Continuum Shift and DJ Max Technika (I personally ruled house at SF4 with El Fuerte), before heading over to the house party at SlapYourMammy's place.

He had a great setup going for our house party. On the first floor of his place we had a projector screen set up for some Rock Band action, and on the second floor in his room, we had a TV playing old school retro games like Tetris Attack, Chip and Dales Rescue Rangers, and then switched over to some Tatsunoku vs Capcom.

Rock Band videos
[embed]179286:31559[/embed]
While getting the audio set up, we decide to start the Rock Band anyway

[embed]179286:31560[/embed]
Singing "Sunday Morning" by No Doubt

We also just enjoyed hanging around at talking about whatever...here is some footage of our impromptu DtoidSF video podcast!

DtoidSF impromptu vidcast
[embed]179315:31567[/embed]

After midnight, and after a couple (read: lots) of drinks, the few remaining DtoidSFers decide to go out and get burritos.

Hilarity ensues.

Anyway, if you missed out on these NARPs, dont fret! We will have more in the future, so make sure to get involved! You can join our Google Group. Facebook, or follow us on twitter! Hope to see you at the next NARP :D   read

Currently DtoidSF is working on getting group sales for the Friday event, so if you are interested in being one of the group make sure to reply on the email thread in our Google Group. Its been a while since we've been down to the San Jose area, so we've decided to plan an afternoon at the Sunnyvale Golfland! This is one of the best arcades in the area, full of games like Pop'n Music, DJ Max Technika, and Blazblue: Continuum Shift. We are hoping to meet up at the arcade at around 6:00 pm to play great arcade games with friends!

Once we are tired of the arcade, we are planning to head to SlapYourMammy's place which is nearby for chilling out! Whether it will be a night of gaming at his place, or a wild dance party is still TBD, but you know with DtoidSF its always a good time! For more details about the address and to find out what you can bring to the apartment, check out the emailer!
