Dtoid Chicago March: The Convention Month

Dtoid Chicago is gaining steam slowly. As the winter weather begins to part and more of us emerge from our winter shelters that we built on our couches, made of blankets and littered with half-eaten Pringles, we're looking at a spring/summer season of NARPing that should solidify our kindly community group as one of the big boys. Attendance has ranged from handfuls to only a single attendee, but everyone that has shown up has been an awesomely entertaining individual. Now if we could only get them all in one place at the same time.

We have another GAMENARP blowout planned at Ignite Network like last month, of course. And if you missed it these last two months, you're missing out. We had a blast playing Rock Band on a massive projector, busting out MvC3 to my continued embarrassment, and even relived the old days and dove into some Diablo II!

Ignite Network
Where: Ignite Network
When: Monday, March 21th 8:00 PM - 2:00 AM
Cost: $15 (With cheaper packages for less hours, too!)

For the uninitiated, Ignite Network is a computer gaming LAN center, complete with a full suite of high-powered desktops, consoles on big screens, and Rock Band gaming studios! These sort of gaming centers are a dying breed, so let's not squander the opportunity! And to top off the perks, every Sunday through Thursday night, Ignite offers an unlimited gaming special!

For $15, you can play for six total hours, an amazing rate, from 8 PM to 2 AM. This gives you access to ALL THEIR EQUIPMENT. The place is a superb resource to gamers, returning us to a world of social gaming, like you once did in your rich friend's den as a child or in a basement somewhere as less-of-a-child.

C2E2
Where: McCormick Place
When: March 18th

If you're a Chicagoan and you missed C2E2 last year, shame on you. This is Chicago's first ever city-specific convention. There are many others like it, but this one is ours. It had an inaugural run last year to great success. And this year proves to be not just a continuation, but a HUGE leap forward. The guests are bigger, the shows more interesting, and they have some amazing events to pay attention to.

Tickets are on sale currently. I've set the event for Friday, because that is the only day I can make it down there. But if you're going, GO ALL WEEKEND. It's worth it and, do yourself one better and send me a message on Twitter or post on the Facebook page to get other organized all on your own. You can do it!

A meetup prior to the event is being planned, so keep track of us on Twitter and Facebook to find out where and when to meet your gaming brethren!   read

Dtoid Chicago February Events: Chicago Loves Dtoid

As we hit the eye of the winter-season storm here in Chicago, the city tends to stay locked in doors. Sometimes even more so with gamers, who already have a spot worn in that couch or chair. So let's break up that sedimentary monotony!

The Room screening
Where: Music Box Theatre Chicago
When: Friday, February 11th, at 10:00 pm
Cost: $15

For the uninitiated, The Room is an exercise in entertaining bewilderment. Released in 2003, the film entered the world rather unceremoniously, but has received a second life as a new cult classic. It exists as a baffling shining star of the "so bad, it's good" film genre. Poorly-written, but quotable. Awkwardly filmed, but watchable. It's a mystery.

In Chicago and particularly at the gorgeous Music Box Theater, the film has become a monolith event. The 750 seat gorgeous amphitheater built in the late 1920s fills to full capacity with attendees. They shout lines, toss footballs lazily in the aisles, and hurl spoons at the screen. It's the jokes that come with watching a bad film on the couch with your friends x1,000.

But it gets better. This upcoming screening will have a special guest. TOMMY WISEAU himself will be there to join his fans in the viewing of the film. He'll be signing things and tossing footballs. You can even get your very own Tommy bobble-head. Fan or not, this is the time for you to come out and see The Room.

Unlimited Gaming Blowout
Where: Ignite Network
When: Monday, February 21th 8:00 PM - 2:00 AM
Cost: $15 (Or, possibly a reduced rate if you guys show up!)

There were times when gamers yanked the cords out of the back of their PC, blew the dust off the top of the case, and lugged ludicrous amounts of equipment to the pal's garage or basement in great numbers. They gamed, they shouted, and they ate themselves that much closer to death in terrific junk food. But with online gaming evolving and growing in its convenience, our trash-talk and insults has moved to a headset. Technology is a wonderful thing, but you should lament the loss of this tradition.

But you don't have to.

Ignite Network is a computer gaming LAN center, complete with a full suite of high-powered desktops, consoles on big screens, and Rock Band gaming studios!

But it gets better, because the great men behind the face of Ignite are Destructoid fans themselves and they're offering a 20% to ALL packages during our upcoming event there on the 20th! This means the traditional $15 pack gets knocked down to $12!

They don't have to do this, but they want to support the fledgling Dtoid Chicago! So hop in a car, grab your friend, and look for this nerd to get six hours of fancy gaming without a dime from your pocket spent.   read

Dtoid Chicago December Events: The Quiet Month

Dtoid Chicago has had a quiet start, with only three to four events under the belt. So frantic is my current existence, that I missed my OWN NARP last month with the Room showing. If you guys showed up, thank you so much for contributing to the group and real sorry I couldn't make it. The Nintendo Burlesque was phenomenal and those of you fine folks that popped in to say hello at my Halloween party are much, much appreciated.

So what's going on at the end of 2010? Very little! But that's alright. Because this fledgling little group doesn't need fancy events to have a good time. We can compose our own fun. But that can only happen if you hop on board the Twitter account, Facebook group, or Google Group! Why should you care? Because not only can we organize various bad movie gatherings, but you can also get my address for this upcoming grand shindig:

What: New Year's Eve!
Where: The Lounge (My apartment)
When: December 31st at 9 PM

We're celebrating the end of something so very important. The end of an era of being able to wear those New Years party glasses where the 0's are like eye-holes. And what better place to catch up with the little spark that is Dtoid Chicago than my own spacious apartment? I say spacious not as a brag (Our rent should really be more than it is), but because it means more room to fit more of you fine folks.
So come on by The Lounge and drink some beers, play some Rock Band, and get involved with your city's NARP group that so desperately needs you!   read

Dtoid Chicago: November, the Nintendo Burlesque Month

Oh boy, Dtoid Chicago has had a quiet start this month, but I am not deterred!  I got to meet two of you at the Team America premiere and I learned a bit about getting organized.  Things are still coming together, but don't fret.  November looks like it might be my month.  And there's still a party happening tonight at my home, The Lounge 3: Lounge Harder.  Join up on our Facebook or Google group for my address or invite to the event!  Show up anytime!  Drink my beer!  Play my games!  Then leave without even giving me a hug!

HALLOWEEN PARTY

The Lounge

8 pm and onward!

THERE IS BEER HERE THAT HAS YET TO BE DRUNK.  I will be dressed as Rorschach and hand you candy.  Eat it.  EAT IT.

Dtoid Chicago October Events: The get-to-know-each-other month

Upon my first week living in Chicago, a 90 year-old man wearing a Russian commandantís cap rode past me on a rusted bicycle and accused me of stealing his dog. Shortly after, I got to watch an original reel of Evil Dead screened in a massive, ornate, velvet-curtain-draped movie theatre built in 1929. Sometime later, a man in a toga stood in the middle of Water Tower square with a megaphone, handed out cardboard tubes, and goaded myself and other strangers into gladiatorial combat until the cops broke up the melee.

What does all this mean to you?

Well, what I mean to say in not so many words is that I absolutely Love. This. City. Even better, Iím not alone in this. Not even close. Much of the Dtoid army has made known their residence here too. Yet we sit on the sidelines as glorious NARPS surge across the country without us. No more, I say. Itís about time we organize. Form a raiding party for amusement. Turn this single-player into some Team Objective. Morph into one big Katamari of comradery. Comratamari. Katamradery.

Ladies and gentlemen, Iím here to announce the formation (or possible re-formation) of Dtoid Chicago! An structured hub of gaming and gaming-related events taking place in Chicago. Hopefully, itíll be an excellent avenue to plan parties, get togethers, and perhaps schedule some epic NARPS.

As the Dtoid site in general is on itís way to some upgrades, most social networking group formations are on hold. But there is a twitter up right now, so hop on board at DtoidChicago. Iíll be updating the feed regularly with notes about interesting events and also as a weapon to spearhead events. What kind of events, you say? How about one of these?

Team America Screening at the Music Box Theatre
When:October 8th at 10:00 pm
Where: Music Box Theatre 3733 N. Southport Ave. Chicago, IL 60613
What: You'll be hearing a lot about this place, I imagine. It's one of the greatest film venues you ever seen. Opened in 1929, the theatre still keeps it's original form with velvet curtains, gargoyles, and ornate framework. You'd think a place like that would just play art-house films, right? Nope!

Every weekend, the theatre streams cult classic films like The Room, Demolition Man, and Evil Dead. Coming up next weekend is a special showing of Team America with the Chiodo Brothers, who did all the special effects on the film, as well as on such gems as Critters and Earnest Scared Stupid. They'll be in attendance to talk about their work on the film with the Chicago AV Club. You'll really never see something like this again, so come on out!

Halloween at the Lounge
When: Halloween weekend (Exact day / hourly time TBA)
Where: The Lounge (aka My sweet-ass apartment)
What: You know what Halloween is! You know how parties work! Well, I'm hosting one of latter things during the former thing. What I'm saying is: I'm having a party and Dtoid is invited.

Held at my apartment, aptly named The Lounge, is going to be a party of epic proportions. Held in my spacious home featuring screens for gaming, corn-dog themed art on the walls, friends, booze, and Dead Kennedys playing on the turntable. The party is in planning form and the exact details will be announced through a soon-to-be-created Google Group/Facebook event.

As for possible events, I'm hoping the Dtoid Chicago community can help me out on that part. I know the Piper's Alley AMC near downtown has a weekly Game On! event with cheap admission to play your favorite Xbox 360 up on the massive theater screen! DePaul University has a semi-montly demonstration of their illustrious gaming design school's indie games in development called Indie City Games. Of course, there's also no doubt we've got some of the greatest bars scattered across this fancy metropolis. If anyone's got a favorite (preferably spacious) watering hole, speak up! And we can organize a night of exaggerated discussions and shouting at bartenders.

Changes are coming to Dtoid and more from the Chicago community branch will be coming with it. Please be patient and Iíll start setting up various social networking groups to manage events, ideas, and community members looking to organize. And feel free to commandeer these aforementioned groups at your disposal. Itíll make me quite happy to use the Dtoid Chicago group even for spontaneous events, like getting everyone together to watch a midnight showing of a new movie or gather up to stand in line for a game release. Cheers![img]   read

DtoidChicago is here -- Chicagoans unite!

Yet another city group. Why Chicago? Why now? We can't -- and won't -- answer those questions. But when there is something video game-related happening in or near Chicago that requires an invasion by the Destructoid Army, let us be your Central Command.

Case in point: the near-mythical Cincinnati, OH NARP taking place the last weekend in May. We can confirm that Ron Workman, Joe Burling (a.k.a. BuckF1tches), and tazarthayoot (a.k.a. WiiSucks, electro lemon) will be involved; whether they will be wearing pants is unconfirmed as of now. A few of us are planning on roadtripping from Chicago, and it promises to be good times, decent times, tragic and seemingly meaningless times, and good times again, in that order.

So if you want to be down with your fellow Chicagoans and/or get in on the NARP, comment below. We'll add you to the friends list over on the side. If you feel like giving information about which Chicago neighborhood or suburb you live in, feel free to add that too.

There's also a forum thread with a map where you can see the locations of many other dtoiders across the globe, and add yourself.
