Maybe Squre + Triangle + Left Stick + L2 comes up with better control ideas...
So I finally got around to trying the Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance demo and it seems to be a well-produced game for the most part. It froze once, as I heard it can, but it isn't the final game and likely isn't even a recent version of it. Demos are often like that. When a "new" demo hits the online store of your choice and has all the same content as one from E3 last year, chances are it's exactly the same as the one from E3 last year. While I get that they take some time to prepare, I think it would benefit developers and publishers to make sure we get the most refined version of whatever they have available. I thought the DmC demo felt pretty good, but who knows what they've done to it since then? The same can be said for Revengeance.
The actual experience was flashy but initially felt bare-bones; the basics are tight, but I don't feel it's taking full advantage of the setting. You can go unnoticed by enemies, but I didn't discover any real stealth elements beyond just being behind them. Stealth kills involve pressing a button and then watching the game play itself; there's no execution involved. That's not necessarily bad, because this isn't explicitly a stealth game, but I would like more depth there. I can't even peek around corners. I found no persistent block or dodge ability when I played. Parries must be timed with the impact of enemy attacks, but the low-set camera would not infrequently place Raiden directly in the way, leaving me unable to see those attacks coming in or making it too difficult to judge the distance. Apparently there is a dodge ability, but the demo makes no mention of it. I had to look it up and it turned out to be unfortunately sluggish for someone who can run up walls while covered in lightning.
Having attack, parry, and dodge all use the same buttons though? That's just bad. It was bad when Muramasa: The Demon Blade did it too, but at least Revengeance doesn't break your sword when Raiden does something you didn't want him to. I don't want games deciding which of three things I mean to do when I press a button. I couldn't just tap Ninja Run to dodge and use any other button to block? I would also prefer if Blade Mode used the right stick to angle and R1 to execute the swing. Blade Mode turns Raiden into a sluggish turret with horrible range, which could be dealt with more easily if the slightest twitch of your thumb didn't set you up to miss the critical point on enemies and lose the healing and recharge that it provides.
Next time: Blops 2 impressions, as though you won't have decided if you're getting it two weeks from now.

You just need to give us the game, start time, and your PSN name so we can put it on the schedule. Last minute additions in the comments here are fine, but games can also be added earlier in the week by visiting the forums and finding the thread with the coming Friday's date. Adding a game there ensures it's on the blog from the moment it goes up.
