Destructoid - Dtoid 360 FNF's Community Blog

About Me
Welcome to Dtoid's Friday Night Fights for Xbox 360!

FNF is a weekly, community-run event where Dtoiders get together to play videogames online! Planning starts in the forums, followed by posts here in the cblogs and on the front page on Fridays. It's easy to get involved, so why not start today?!

<-- You can read the blog for more info, but here are the basics:

How to FNF

To Play
• Leave a comment in the blog or forum post with your Gamertag and which games from the schedule you want to play. More people will show up if they know other people are playing, so speak up!

• Send an Xbox LIVE friend request to the person hosting the game and let them know you're from Dtoid and you're ready to FNF!

To Host
• Leave a comment in this blog or the week's forum post listing game you want to play, the time you want to play it, and your Xbox LIVE Gamertag.

• Don't worry about hosting the same game or hosting a game at the same time as someone else. Instead, think of it like a movie theater; more than one game can run at the same time!

Still confused? Click here for a full guide to everything FNF!

360 Friday Night Fights: Let's KICKSART this week's FNF!
Dtoid 360 FNF | 11:40 AM on 02.10.2012 14 comments

You may or may not have heard the big news this week, Tim Schafer and Double Fine Entertainment want to make a game, for you. Tim and his company want to make an old school, point and click adventure game, for the fans and with an unprecedented amount of fan input as well as behind the scenes access.

Now, it costs money to make a game, lots of money. More money than I currently have that's for sure. Since Double Fine didn't want to go through any big time publishers, (because let's be honest, none of them would have touched an old school point an click game with a ten foot pole) they put out a call to all gamers everywhere, gamers who are interested in having a say in a game that will be made just for them.

Enter Kickstarter. The goal to make this unnamed game was to raise $400,000.00 by March 13th, 2012. In less than 24 hours the Kickstarter fund had hit the 1 million dollar mark and is showing no signs of slowing down. As of this post the total amount pledged was $1,364,923.

This has caused much conversation and controversy however, it seems that most gamers are all for it, pledging their money to have a game made that normally would never see the light of day. There are those however who do not agree with the way Double Fine is going about this and they are not shy about voicing their opinions.

So what say you, good reader? Is this an amazing idea that could change the way games are made or is this sending a negative message to smaller game companies who don't have the brand name that Double Fine carries with it? Or maybe, do you think gamers should donate their money elsewhere?

I'm not so sure that there is a right or wrong answer, but I can tell you this, it's Friday and we've got some games to play, so check out the list below and see what's what.

New to Friday Night Fights? It's easy to get involved!

Each week, a bunch of us Dtoiders get together to play videogames online! It's a 100% community-run event, so feel free to join in or even host something yourself!

The planning for FNF starts in the forums, where community members volunteer to host matches and post their pertinent details (game, time, Gamertag, etc.). Then, every Friday, reminder posts go up here in the cblogs followed by a recap post on the front page on the front page for last-minute planning.

To join in, simply send a friend request to the match host! (Don't forget to say you're from Dtoid!) If you'd rather host something yourself, just post your details below in the following format:

Game: Game Name
Host: Dtoid Username
Gamertag: Xbox Live Gamertag
Time: Time (Eastern please!)

We hope to see you online!

Damn, guess I waited too long, but I'll be hosting Super Street Fighter IV AE. 8pm EST, ShinigamiBV.

Also, if anyone wants to play Simpsons Arcade, X-Men, Castle Crashers, or any other beat-'em-up, let me know.

WTF? SSFIVAE? Shit. I (basically)completely stopped playing it months ago but if it's on FNF, I have to play it.

@Char: Can you get/use a mic, this time? I wasn't sure if you wanted me to bust out my main or not when you kept choosing 'Gief. :P

Sorry, Rammstein, my mic is busted. Use whoever you want, I usually switch around between 7 or 8 regulars and then get down to serious business with Gief for a few rounds. I would like to see a T.Hawk vs Gief battle at some point, though.

Gamers should put their money where they want to put it. I have no problem with a bigger team 'kickstarting' a game like Double Fine just did. If publishers wouldn't give money for this adventure game to be made, then they don't know what gamers want - and what's more, they haven't even asked.

It's just one of those things: Publishers want low risk and high return. They copy another game that has had big success like Call of Duty or Angry Birds. They don't ask themselves what gamers want. This kickstarter event is just evidence of that.

The good news is that there is room out there for people to make a lot of money when they truly bring something awesome to the table.
