[insert picture of Anti-Christ...or Peter Moore since they look like brothers]
As I've been saying,
XBox Live should be free. It's a generic service when compared to what's out there on the PC market, and I think Microsoft learned that the hard way. No one on a PC is going to pay to play a shooter. That's strictly talking non-console PC gamers. What Microsoft originally did was plaster all of the good features from PC gaming onto a console so non-PC gamers could go "whoa" and drool at such terrific features as voice chat with kids, friends list that doesn't suck as much as the Wii's, and up to 16 player multiplayer! Well, granted that hundreds of politicians use feature number 2 and the PC world has had the others for a while (aside form 16 player multiplayer... try thousands per game), this Windows Live feature didn't really work out like Microsoft bargained, so they did the best they could and made it free. So that means it's time for me to get my Gears of War back out and get those achievements.
Life's sort of like an RPG, and I'm just a crazy gold farmer. But my gold is Trophies and Achievements.

!What++
If nobody pays for it, they'll have to do something to make people to use it. This is just one more thing that makes paying for live look stupid.
A. No.
2. Math?
D. Under $4? What discounts?
5. Peter Moore is still the MS mascot to me. A tool.
623. Which games? Halawls?
Oh, buying a card for 12 months. Yeah, not so keen on that. Ya see, I'm about to start school again so if I have to pay for a service, I'll feel more obligated to use it. And I won't have the time.
Plus, pretty soon in the great US of freakin' A, Comcast, AT&T and the TimeWarner Nazis have a plan to ban the internet for gamers by charging us per GB used. So, nah, Xbox Live needs to be free. Quit being a tool.
Heretic, already got one and can you honestly see a real reason to pay for their crap if they made it free on Windows? I forgot: fanboys love to support their company, even if their wallet gets raped.
b/c they can.
unless you know another way to play online with your 360?
Why would they charge money on a platform that has never had to pay money ever. It makes no sense business wise to make them do that to the PC. The 360 on the other hand has the best online of any console whether or not you believe it is a superior console (Which I don't believe it is). For the service you get from XBL the 50 a year is nothing. So stop complaining.
I knew it, heretic! your green fanboy colors are showing all over! oh wait... thats dtoid colors D:
I love you all.
Boo hoo, build a bridge and get over it. They pay people to maintain the service, and people pay for the service, they're going to charge for the service if they can make money off of it. They're not out to help us, they're out for profit.
And they don't give a flying fuck about people like you, because they're making their money.
Drvby do you download loads and loads of software and music for free by any chance? It seems to me you're one of those people that expects everything to be free as if you have a right to have it even though the people providing it need to make money to keep producing. We here in the UK pay more for everything on Xbox Live by the way, so you have nothing to whine about.
In summation shut the hell up and stop crying.
I heard this is where the dancing asian girls are hanging out.
It's 50 bucks a year...get over it.
I'm getting Deja Vu... again
Freedom isn't free
It costs folks like you and me
And if we don't all chip in
We'll never pay that bill
Freedom isn't free
No, there's a hefty fuckin' fee.
And if you don't throw in your buck 'o five
Who will?
The easy answer: Because 360 users are dumbasses.
when did gfw live become free
What Aertyr said. The main difference between XBL on Windows and XBL on the Xbox is that Windows already has competing services and options that do the same things (actually more things I think) all for free. It doesn't make sense for Microsoft to enter that market and charge you for it when there's that long history of free multiplayer and Steam already exists.
Console side, there is no competing service like that and there really shouldn't be because it would fracture the player base.
I don't understand everyone defending Microsoft for charging them money. If you could get it for free would you decline?
@brainderailment
No, but you can't and it's worth the money to me.
@Brainderailment
Do you subscribe to any MMORPGs? Do you feel that the same argument holds for those pay-to-play games as well?
@Aertyr
Can you explain that theory? How is it "the best"? Because it's a shopping mall? Please...
So wait, you're going to post something like this while proudly displaying a WoW badge in your profile? You pay $15/mo to play progress quest.
Umm, thread unofficially locked.
Why not Xbox Live? weeeeeeeeeell. More people use it, the end. Trying to put a paid unified service on a PC was a dumb move.
pwnbliterated.
Someone got OWNED.
See I pay for WoW and Xbox live but you don't see me complaining. :)
This post confuses and angers. Rawr!
Please reword your point in english.
And use paragraphs.
To answer the question posited in the title of the post: Why is Windows Live Free, when Xbox Live is not? That's got a simple answer... if the 360 didn't have Xbox Live, there would be no reason to buy one, however; there is more reason to buy Windows than to play games online. Not to mention the fact that there are a TON of PC games that have free online play on Windows whereas the 360s only competition online is Sony, and they have yet to be as strong as Xbox Live.
Different platforms, different standards.
Its cheap.
Its organized.
It rarely goes down.
I have many handy features to report and or shut someone up.
I like it.
And Heretic just owned you.
Everything is free, including all your stuff. I'm taking it.
GFW = Free because PC gamers don't want it
XBL = Pay because xbox gamers do want it.
GFW = sucks
XBL = awesome
GFW != XBL
* "!=" means does not equal.
Hopefully this new Fall update will make the value of XBL worth it to drvvyby? or whatever your name is.
I on the other hand do not care.
Best Buy gives me 12+1 month cards for 35 bucks.
Actually, fagwipes, WoW isn't really a burden since I only play when I get free time. Ya see, there's this thing where Blizzard gives you money to have someone sign up. If one of my friends (referring to the ones that I can physically hang out with) is going to buy a copy to play and hasn't yet, I just email them a guest thing and when they buy it, I get a month!
SHAZAM!
Shouldn't the internet have known that you can do that by now? Bunch of 2 year olds on this site.
BUT OMG PWND ON THE INETERNET! YOU BETTER GO TELL YOUR BLOW UP GIRLS YOU PWND SOMEONE. UBBER.
