I didn't expect too much from the new Vegas. The first one was played more than Gears of War when it came out, but I still hated the ridiculous "To be continued" ending. It sums up developers as lazy to me. Very lazy. In fact, what I actually did was paid $120 for Rainbow Six Vegas: The Completed Game. So, with that many bones thrown down for a game that I enjoy a lot, what do I get with the 2nd half of the game? MLG ads everywhere. I'm not quite done with the game and only because I'm working too much right now. But the past few levels I've went through on Story have been overwhelmingly hard to play through with the amount of ads in the game. The last level I played (**SPOILERS** the one where Michael has to disarm the bomb on the train) had over 30 ads placed for MLG. You're walking through a mall setting at one point and we (my accomplice has been gaming with me) noticed half the stores were named MLG. Then, around the stores and all over the place are little MLG ads in various places. It made me feel robbed a little bit. I really wanted to jump online, head over to a random modification store, order me a chip, and then download my way to free game freedom. Hey, if I'm going to pay for a game, I don't want to be interrupted by massive loads of ads.
And please, get off that stupid notion of "games are more expensive to make" and "the developers need the money" crap. I don't care about them at all and I care about my wallet more than theirs. When I have to spend $60 a game now, I expect NO ads in games, but sadly, that's not the case. I've been gaming since the mid-80s, since my dad first built me a fort and handed me a grey light gun and had me blasting ducks. I've seen the evolution of a great thing turn into a greedy thing. It's really disheartening. I mean, sure, some ads in games make the game more realistic. Such as a sports game advertising Gatoraide. That makes a lot of sense to me. But MLG for a store name in a game? Axe ads all over the place? How would you feel if Oblivion would of had health potions brought to you by Coca-Cola? Or in Halo 3, Master Chief drives a Dodge truck? Or in Gears of War, your saws are brought to you by Sears? It doesn't make any sense to WANT ads in your games because the way it's handled is horrible. For that reason alone, I back up piracy because if it keeps getting out of hand, I'm going to keep my money and just steal the games that have ads in them. There's no need for me to pay for ads. If those ads are what's paying the bills, then you don't need my $60 anymore.
-dryvby, going back to finish Vegas for the first and second time.
I actually LIKE in-game ads, but it really depends and here's why. Immersion.
I like being able to play The Vegas games, be hunting down some 12 year old kid only to see a "Street Kings" advertisement, it ties everything in to my own world rather than some fake alternate universe where terrorists have captured Vegas for themselves. I love to see Ads, but it's a conditional love, I'd hate to see a dodge sticker on my horse in oblivion or a Mountain Dew potion in Final Fantasy. But they do serve their purpose.
tl;dr I like in-game advertising, WHEN IT'S APPROPRIATE.
Have you played Vegas 2? Only a fool would like in-game ads after seeing that. I find the way they used to do stuff, the fake Coca-Cola machines from HL (original) were nice. I don't need to feel like I'm in the real world. I need to feel like I'm having fun without someone trying to sell me more worthless crap in my games. It bugs me. Again, they keep throwing ads in the games, then those will be the games I'll skip or obtain pirated copies of. Those ads can pay for them missing out on $60.
It may seem excessive, the ads in Vegas but if you compare it to real life it just scratches the surface. People forget we are bombarded with ads everywhere we go. We can't look at anything within a block radius and not be assaulted by billboards, signs, commercials, radio spots..we forget about it because we're submerged in it.
In all honesty..in game ads haven't replicated the realism of real world advertising.
Also, Bring your ass to our Friday Night Fights sometime DryvBy.
I've never been to Vegas, so I don't know, but would Vegas really have Major League Gaming posters all over the place? People argue that in-game adverts can make the game more immersive if it's set in modern times and all the ads are targeted towards gamers, it kills the immersion. Most ads in public places IRL don't cater to gamers. However, it makes sense that ads in a video game would. Don't expect any genuine realism with in-game ads, folks.
I've always thought that if they're going to obviously generate revenue by adding in game ads, then they need to lower the price.
Period.
Well, if you don't care about developers, you should probably just stop playing video games now. After all, they won't be able to make your fancy games without the income to support themselves.
o_o
"And please, get off that stupid notion of "games are more expensive to make" and "the developers need the money" crap. I don't care about them at all and I care about my wallet more than theirs."
Yea cause we all know modern games cost 20 cents to make....no wait they are pushing the limits of budgets and ads are a great way to make revenue. Plus they devs could careless about what you think about ads, they pay bills and add to their profits so they are happy. Until such a time as we stop buying games en masse due to ads or they become unprofitable they will always be there, so you better get used to it.
@razerangel
lol, corporate sucker. Fact: PC games generally look better in most ever case, yet they're always cheaper. $10 cheaper. Some cases $20. They also do care what I think because when people quit caring, software is easy to download without being caught (torrents are never the only way... heck, DCC still works and is still popular).
I agree with Yash on this, a certain amount of ads, without overdoing it, can make a game more immerse if it fits the environment.
Other than that, is there really any info on how much they make from the ads? I mean, the thing in question is whether or not they need the ad money, is there any proof that they do or don't need it?
