My new PS3 and impressions thereof
DrNutt | 11:41 AM on 05.15.2008 25 comments

Well, finally decided to go the way of several other Dtoiders as of late and pick up a PS3. I was planning on waiting until the MGS4 bundle so I could not only get everything I wanted in one package, but also backwards compatibility. There were two reasons I decided not to wait. 1) My tax return and economic stimulus money came in at the same time and left me with a chunk of money larger than my paycheck burning a hole in my pocket. 2) I decided that backwards compatibility wasn't as much of an issue for me, as I have tried playing PS2 games on my roommate's 61" TV through component and found it to be a little too big. My PS2 games just seem to look better when played on my 37" Sony Trinitron that sits in my bedroom, and that's fine with me.

So I dropped some bills and got the 40gig PS3 along with Uncharted and, because I just had to buy it for the fourth fucking time, Ninja Gaiden Sigma. I just managed to plow through Uncharted by last night, and it mostly lived up to the good things I'd heard. After playing GTAIV, the gunplay was definitely a little disappointing, but I think it has to do with the better physics engine of the latest jaunt through Liberty City. There were time's in Drake's adventure that I felt I was skating around in a world greased with butter, and the way the enemies moved was unnatural and frankly, kind of retarded. I was not expecting third world mercenaries to dance around like marionettes, but that is what they appeared to do. Overall the gunplay was just too fast and loose for my tastes, but the cover system worked reasonably well, and despite the cracked out animations and unsettling accuracy, the enemy AI was at least decent in the "flanking the fuck out of you and tossing well-placed grenades" sense.

The story was sparse in the beginning, but did seem to flesh out towards the end, and despite the supernatural "twist" (which didn't bother me that much since it had already been spoiled for me) was about as satisfying as any Indiana Jones movie. In fact, I daresay that playing through this game has made me much more excited about the new Indiana Jones movie coming out this month.

I've been putting off playing Ninja Gaiden Sigma, and decided to be a complete sucker and pick up Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, also know as GLORIFED DEMO THAT WE ARE CHARGING AN UNREASONABLE PRICE FOR. After a download and installation that took too fucking long, I got my chance to see what all the hype was about. I honestly have not played a GT game since the very first on my original Playstation, but I think the experience may have been ruined for me by Forza and Forza 2. I prefer the physics engine and damage modeling in those games, but I'll be damned if I didn't spend every race in GT5 Prologue with a smile on my face because of how pretty the game looked from the steering wheel camera. I'm really excited for the full game because of real time damage modeling, and my hope for GT5 rests on 1) actual damage modeling, and not, LOL your tires wear in real time, and 2) that those of us that boned up and paid the 40 bucks will get some sort of discount code so as to avoid paying 100 god damn dollars for the full version of the game.

Anyway, I realize that probably seemed pretty critical, but overall I have been pretty satisfied with my purchase, and with Metal Gear Solid 4 on the horizon I have a feeling it will be well worth it. If you want to add me as a friend and invite me into your online gaming fold, go ahead. My PSN id is PadreChester (curse you PSN for not allowing spaces!) and I imagine that I will be picking up Unreal Tournament in the near future, if only for the oddity of being able to play with a Master Chief skin on my PS3.

Get Unreal, that is definitely one of the fastest, good looking FPS ever. If you plaeyd Gears of War, it is the same characters, but on more detailed worlds and the action is fast paced, 0 lag over PSN, 16 player carnage.

Glad you are happy with the purchase, hopefully I will have time to play again after a current project im working on. but you can add me: Crunshii, and get Sadistic, SadiG, brain and yojimbo, these peeps will make you have an orgy when you play.

I purchased mine under the same circumstances, got my tax money back and picked up a 40 gig as well. So now I have my 360 and PS3.

Thanks for the info on the online play... Will probably not be purchasing GTAIV since I already have it for the 360, but will definitely bepicking up Unreal Tournament when I get a chance (and probably after paying off some pesky medical bills).

That stimulus money was tempting me, but I'm staying strong and holding out for the bundle. I really want one with BC...

I love Uncharted. That game is so awesome.

have you played Everyday Shooter yet? I think you would really like it. You should give it a download. :)
Takeshi's Destructoid Blog
Listen to Chad, he knows his stuff. Also try to find someone to share your downloaded games with. I can't do it because I'm sharing with 5 people right now (which is the max amount).

PSN: JohanHin you can add me if you want.

I'm waiting until I move into my new apartment in July and get myself an HDMI switch so I can have a 360 and PS3 both hooked up to my 7 ft screen/projector combo. Until then I'm gonna wait and enjoy my 360.

I'm excited to finally play R&C and Uncharted, as well as UT3.

Yeah, I've been loving Ikaruga and Omega 5 on my Xbox, so I'm definitely going to pick up Everday Shooter. However I will probably wait until I can finish the shmups I already have because they are making me feel like a real bitch at the moment. Are there any other games out there that might be a little more under the radar that I should keep an eye out for?

Pain isn't bad when you're sober. But it's FUCKING AWESOME when you've got a few drinks in you.

My PSN is weirDfunK.
Ill try to remember to add you as a friend when i get home.
Elefunk maybe (if you like those kind of lemmings-type of puzzle games)

I'd give Super Stardust HD a shot too, I found that to be very fun and well worth the $9.99. Also if you want to see another very pretty game on the system give Heavenly Sword a rent, worth it for the voice acting and cut scenes alone.

Thank you for updating us on your life.

Congrats on getting a PS3, dude! Personally, I thought Uncharted was awesome, but I didn’t like the twist. Also, I really should get around to beating Ratchet & Clank Future.

And Everyday Shooter is going to make you its bitch. I think I got to level 4, like, once.
brainderailment's Destructoid Blog
Resistance isn't bad if you want to play a decent length FPS romp. I wouldn't pay full price for it though. My recommendations:
Everyday shooter
Pain
UT3
Heavenly Sword (Rent and finish)
Resistance
R&C:Future Tools
And give Calling All Cars a thought.
I haven't played Super Stardust HD, but I've heard a lot of good things about it.
Too Much Coffee Man's Destructoid Blog
You were better off getting the 40GB, as long as you didn't mind losing the BC & not having the flash card readers didn't matter. Since the 40GB uses the 65nm Cell reducing the power consumption. You can still use a USB thumbdrive to watch vids off of since you don't have the flashcard slots. Just make sure it's a fast one ( Corsair GT or OCZ Rally 2 ) both can be found at newegg.com
Takeshi's Destructoid Blog
Oh yeah, Super Stardust HD is awesome. You can also play your own music which is cool. Tekken 5: Online is good fun because it supports in-game voicechat and rooms up to six players. Talk shit when your friends beat each other up. And Poker supports six player in-game VIDEOchat. It's fun.

Yes..another Jedi in my clutches. You made a wise move to join the darkside my son. Now come..add me to your friend;s list. I have such sights to show.

Also, Super Stardust HD and Everyday Shooters are must downloads as well as Echochrome if you want an Escheresque style puzzle game.

@Samit: Did you ever get around to playing the full version of MLB '08 The Show? I played the demo but would like to hear your thoughts on the full game...

@everyone else: Thanks for the recs and reqs, be seeing you soon on Li, erm, PSN.

Wow, I can't believe noone has mentioned Warhawk yet.

Also well worth the price of admission.

Also, PixelJunk Monsters is well under the radar, and fantastic.
Crunshii's Destructoid Blog
Well warhawk is a must have no matter what :P
DrNutt's Destructoid Blog
RE: Warhawk

I am quite picky about my shooters, and my number one biggest peeve is loose feeling controls. Examples of what I like: Call of Duty 4, Halo, and Counterstrike. Dislike: Battlefield, F.E.A.R.

Knowing that, would you recommend Warhawk or is that even applicable. Also, since I don't have a headset yet, is the one included with the retail package good enough, or should I just download it and buy a better headset?
Corak's Destructoid Blog
Got a bluetooth headset for your cell? If you do that will work. Its what I use.
Samit Sarkar's Destructoid Blog
@DrNutt: Unfortunately, no, I never got around to getting MLB 08: The Show. But from what I hear, it’s loads better than MLB 2K8. Whatever you do, don’t buy that turd of a game.

As for Warhawk, you probably won’t like its on-the-ground controls because they’re loose — but once you get in a plane or vehicle, everything works fine. And yeah, the headset that comes in the box is a regular Bluetooth headset — a Jabra BT125 — and it works just fine, though it can get a bit uncomfortable after a while because it doesn’t have any foam padding.

I'll have to add you to my PS3, dude... I have been so busy with night school I haven't been on CoD 4 much. :)

 about me

Game consoles I currently own: NES, Playstation, PS2, Xbox, 360, Gamecube, Game Boy Advance SP, PSP, and PS3

Greetings D-toid. My name is Dan and I am a 25-year old gamer with the worst case of game ADD you've ever seen. I used to have a "currently playing" list up here, but I change that so often that it's a pain in the ass to mess with here. And frankly, who really cares?

I love all games, even the shitty ones, but my favorites come from the 8 and 16-bit eras. You know, the standard names that get bandied about on this site, like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 3(6), and Secret of Mana. I also really loved Jurassic Park 2 for the SNES, and if you think I'm joking about that one, I strongly encourage you to NOT emulate it right now. It's like Contra with dinosaurs, and if that doesn't seem awesome to you, then we shouldn't be friends.

If you have a 360 or a PS3, feel free to add me to your list of friends, and I'll be up for playing just about anything.

This is me.

And this is a cat in a basket. Enjoy.
