So in regards to Nex’s post, I had heard from Dr. Pirate first. He told me this news about the time Kotaku had it up. Although Nex’s story was about 10 times more informative, I’ve still been freaking out over this for a little while now.
For those of you that know, The HotSpot is Gamespot’s podcast. Not to steal some shine from the Toid podcast, but it was one of, if not, my favorite podcast to listen to. Those guys were hilarious and Jeff being the host had always made the show hilarious. So I listened to it this week and there was no Jeff... I can’t remember the last time Jeff wasn’t on the Hotspot. But I didn’t really question it.
I will admit Jeff has made some decisions for reviews I have never been able to agree with but hey, it’s his opinion. I’ve always respected that guy.. Heck I fucking loved him as a journalist. Isn’t that what they paid him to do? Give his professional opinion on games? Even if I completely disagreed with him on something, his reviews we’re posted in a very professional way so IMO he was a great reviewer. Wasn’t Jeff editor-in-chief since Greg Kasavin left? How could they do that?
Bahh.. I don’t know. They didn’t mention it at all on the HotSpot but it WAS a dull episode. I’d love to think what higher ups think about this. Like other people at Gamespot or even IGN. What about Destructoid? What do Destructoid’s editors think? Nex?
I definitely noticed his absence this week and thought it was odd that they didn't even mention he wasn't there let alone where he was.
I never really agreed with Jeff on any level, and there was always something about him I always liked, and also things I didn't like. But you know, I'm with him on this if this is the real reason he was fired.
Gamespot's journalistic integrity took a massive hit. The second they put advertisement on their front page related to a game, the trust in the review for the game immediately goes out the window. Gamespot has to respond to this, they took a serious hit and it brings into question their previous reviews. Do we not remember that time the PS3 page was full of 360 ads? I'm not saying they're jaded, and being paid by Microsoft, but is it crazy to consider it now?
The second thing that happened, is Gerstmann is now a role model when it comes to objective-based writing and perspective. I have no doubt he'll come back, a man like that doesn't just fade into time, he loves the gaming community too much. He'll start his own website I would imagine.
Good Blog post man, keep it coming.
