About Me
I suppose I'm an older casual gamer who only really plays a select few games with anything close to the usual obsession associated with hardcore gamers. I also don't play first-person shooters or long and involved role-playing games because I don't really have the time or inclination and I unfortunately often experience motion sickness from that sort of gaming. Almost all of my friends fall into the hardcore group, but they tolerate my lack of devotion all the same because they're cool like that.

Also, I'm old, I'm female, and if you're an ass to me while I'm getting my feet wet I will hold a grudge until the end of time.

[color=blue]The current generation of gaming consoles marked out for me the final end of my grasping tendencies of youth. Clearly for someone of my age the latest offering from Nintendo was always going to be of interest, although I preferred it when they called it Revolution, but until recently it hadn't dawned on me that I would have so little interest in what else was on offer.

Don't get me wrong, I love the fact that there are several different options of gaming platform out there each generation (although clearly this puts a dent in the pocket of many hardcore gamers who just have to have every system - you know who you are) but I find myself less and less impressed by the advancing technology and realistic graphics. While I support 100% the production of epic masterpieces that require weeks of gameplay to complete and can smile and nod at movie-like quality of the in-game footage, I still find I have more fun playing something simple yet addictive such as Tetris.

So while Sony and Microsoft sit around congratulating themselves on how much more advanced their hardware is... I think the greater achievement lies with Nintendo and their realisation that the future of gaming is a social one that even your granny can get involved in.

The future of gaming is th-ooo Phoenix! Yay, Jean Grey!

Oh, where was I? Yeah, BBCode needs to be on the same line. As soon as you press "enter/return," it kills the code and you have an eye sore on your hands.

Dude, are you fucking kidding me? You would rather play Wiisports than CoD4?

Competition is a must in any industry or the consumer will get fucked in the ass. Look at gas prices. If we had an alternate form of energy that could comppete against the oil companies maybe we woudn't be paying five bucks a gallon.

Your just mad because your mommy didn't buy you a 360 or PS3. Don't take it out on us because your stuck with a boring system with very few good quality games.

There will always be games for both mediums. Without complex games, we would get bored and move onto a different hobbie. Do you want that?

Oh god, not another "which console is better" discussion.

Now there are different consoles for every kind of gamer, even if you like FPS, childish funny games or wathever. if you like a certain kind of game, buy it and play it. PERIOD

The only thing you can say is that the PS3 is the worst as it doesn't have a good game catalog YET.

He was saying that there should be only one console, and that console only should have basic & easy games because he can't play the "meat & potatoes games" without becomming sick.

I love to debate, thats why I post so much. Don't get me wrong.....short, easy & basic games have there place.

Casual gaming is a mainstay of the gaming world just like disco, hair-metal, and Member's Only jackets were the popular fad back in the day.

Casual gaming has always existed going back to Pong. It's never going to go anywhere or fade away. There's been far more casual gamers who play Spider Solitaire or Elf Bowling on their PCs than there ever have been hardcore gamers. The only thing different is that the major console manufacturers are starting to wake up and realize they can make money off this group of people.

Ohhh poop I should have checked it before I wandered off into the forums to look around. Thanks for the heads up BlindsideDork.

JACK of No Trades, first off just because you intend to sit in your parents' basement until you're 50 doesn't mean the rest of us are still sucking on the parental teat. I happen to work for a living and pay my own way in the world. Also, I clearly stated that I was happy about the current status of competition and availability of different types of gaming experience and was merely expressing the fact that I attributed my lack of interest in the console equivalent of who has the biggest dick to my advancing years. You clearly missed the point.

And Vongore I'm really sorry that you wasted 2 seconds of your precious existence reading a couple of paragraphs. What were you expecting? Some startling revelation about the nature of reality? An insider scoop from someone who heard from someone that's banging a Square Enix staff member? Get real. Nobody held a gun to your head and made you read it. You don't like my aimless musings? Blow me.

Also, I'm not a Dude.

Chick, I use 3D programs all day at my work designing interiors of airplanes. Don't believe me? Ask some people around here.

I have a son, I play guitar, I ride a motorcycle and I play videogames and lol I have my own place lol.

So then JACK of No Trades we have established that your need to vent all over my blog like a demented troll is NOT in fact due to your own lack of a rich and fulfilling existence... could it be that you're compensating for something else?

Judging from your blog you've had a hard start to life and I can respect that might give you a bit of an attitude but I've had enough of being shit on by men and I can hold a grudge forever so why don't you go piss over someone else like a good boy.

It's too bad these comments have turned all flamey, but I can relate to what Discordia was saying (at least in his original post). I'm 30 and never really stopped playing games in the last 20 years, and I find that the Wii is a good fit for me. I have the most fun playing with my real-life friends, and the Wii is great for that.

I take exception to the idea that "casual" or pick-up-and-play games are "short, easy and basic". Geometry Wars, Katamari Damacy and Boom Blox, to name a few, are games that are easy to pick up but difficult to master. They're all about gameplay. Meanwhile, a lot of the so-called "meat and potatoes" games can be beaten just by playing for 20 hours without really getting better. Once I'm finished with the story in these games, I'm unlikely to replay them.

Thanks Hoodie, I appreciate the comment. That's exactly where I'm coming from too.

And yeah, I'm in a bad mood tonight - work was shit, I had an argument with my fiance, and I'm tired. So I probably over-reacted a tad to the negativity. But typically I'm not good about taking abuse from people without hitting back.

Well, your original post was fair and clearly offered as your own personal perspective, but some people are REALLY threatened by the little white box and tend to FREAK OUT if you dare to suggest there might be more to gaming than cutting-edge graphics and feature-film-scale budgets.

People who play Solitaire aren't really casual gamers. People who play the Wii for some of the pointless mini-game... er games are casual gamers. Sorta like emo music. It's been around forever but not the stupid, overly-popular sub-genre/culture we have today that will probably die out in the next 5 years or so.

Anybody remember when freaking Frogger was at the top of the PS1 sales charts for like... ever? It was like the Carnival Games of 10 years ago. Mass-marketed shovelware will always sell to people who don't know better. Hopefully quality endures. And that includes deep but approachable games.

Ok, Ok, Soooorry, really.

But i wasn't pointing you exactly, i was pointing Jack for his "Dude, are you fucking kidding me? You would rather play Wiisports than CoD4? ". That's what really pissed me off.

I actually agree with a lot of things that you stated on your blog, and if you read mine, you will notice that i've been a Nintendo follower since the NES (and Wii being my current-gen console of choice).

And well that might be it, sorry if you misunderstood my post.

Well Vongore I was a bit harsh in my response to you and it was a tad uncalled for on my part, but I was in a pissy mood by that point. Nevertheless I apologise for my outburst.
