I'm going to try and keep this relatively short.

So I'm waiting at a bus station for my bus to come around, and I see this kid pull out his DS Lite and start playing it. After getting a closer look, he was playing one of the re-released NES games for the Game Boy Advance. That was pretty neat. But it brings up a question for me.

Are you the kind of person who would pull out their handheld in public and just start playing it?

I've only done it a few times, and I've got good reasons not to whip out my DSi and start playing Pokemon Platinum. For one, it's a goddamn Pokemon game. It's that thing where if you're caught playing it, people will look at you and ask "aren't you an adult?" Okay, well, nobody would outright do that, but personally, I like conformity.

Another reason I don't do it is because when I game, I'm not aware of what's going on around me. If I'm in public, I would be playing with headphones on so I could hear the music and sounds, and that itself helps distract another one of my senses. The only way I'd be pulled out of a trance like that would be to be physically moved, or to just ragequit.

Also, it's the community. I remember pulling my GBA out in the middle of Science class a few years back and started to play MegaMan Battle Network. The local fatass (With the last name Legros, which translates to "the big" if it's said correctly) came by after doing nothing, asked what I was playing and proceeded to call me MegaMan for the rest of the year. Sure, it was a school-situation, but it still sorta turned me off of playing videogames in public.

What about you? Do you play your handheld systems in public, or keep all of your gaming at home?

I don't really have any opportunities to play a handheld in public, since I drive to wherever I want to go. Even when I'm not driving, I'm usually with other people and have somebody to talk to. I have no problem with playing games in public, I just never get the chance to do it.
So basically you stopped playing because some fat dumbass called you MegaMan? Dude... seriously... grow some balls.
I turn on my DS waiting for the bus or at the bus. Sometimes when I am in WiFi spots because my local modem is dick cunt on detecting the WEP key from my DS.
So basically I stopped playing video games in public because of a number of reasons. I don't like playing on the bus so that I can miss my stop, I don't like playing at the mall because I'm pulled in a trance, and I don't like playing around strangers because it makes me look like a statue with motors in his thumbs.
I think playing in public has nothing wrong. In fact if people watch you playing they could be cutious on what you are playing so it's all simple stuff. There are also some that don't give a shit so go ahead.

Of course, if you want to feel sexy and be a pretentious flirter (like me) you can save it on your pocket and if they find it just be cool of it.
If I have a handheld with me and I'm not in a hurry, I don't mind playing in public if I can find a nice, shady spot.

I find it amusing when people question my gaming habits. The funny thing is that I get more guff from kids than anyone else. One day at the last place I worked, the boss had his daughter and son with him. The son was obviously won over, but the daughter asked 'You still play video games? You're cuckoo!' Over the next 10 minutes, I systemically broke down that question in a way to make her think what would happen if she gave up everything she loved just because she grew to an adult. The boss heard the whole thing and laughed. Priceless.
I recently got a good round of Rhythm Heaven going while sitting at one of the rest areas in my local mall. I always take my toys with me when I get my car serviced and I have a few hours to burn in the waiting room. And of course... airports.

So naw, I don't have a problem with gaming in public. I've never once had anyone approach me and make a comment. Everyone's got their friggin' iPhone whipped out anyway, so who are they to judge me?
I play on the train. People might give me funny looks, but who cares? I don't like those people anyway.
Chocobo Knight: Fucking awesome.

Nintendoll: Actually, I remember last year on our (older brother and my) train ride back from FanEXPO, there was a kid sitting behind me who was on Pictochat. I joined with him, drew some stuff (Not dicks), and the kid had Pokemon with him. So I beat his ass into the ground on it.

Don't judge me.
I used to when I was younger, but once I entered college I started play my DS/PSP regularly between periods or whatever. Helps me relax.
Almost never now; I jam out on my DS sitting on my porch now.
I also think that pulling out your gadget in public; be it DS, PSP, iPhone or iPod; is the new smoking-in-public "check me out" depending on where you are.
To be honest, I wouldn't back in the day, but now that I'm married I could give a shit. I think a lot of people are like that, haha.

Hell, I played NBA Jam/Demon's Crest on my laptop sitting next to some old couple and got a few looks.
I have no problems with playing my DS Lite or PSP in public. And like Diverse, I'll usually play something before my classes start up.
I only play while walking. Well I don't usually play while walking, mainly just listen to RetroForceGo! on my iPod.
I play everywhere I go.
I play at work.
I take the PSP to play between classes at uni (have 4 hour breaks sometimes), no one cares (i am in computer programming tho rofl) and i wouldnt care if they did lol Im more afraid of the uber nerds watching me play and trying to tell me what to do, then snide comments lmao
Fuck jealous haters. Anyone who gives you greif for playing a handheld in public is wishing they had one too.
That's kinda what a DS is for, isn't it?
At gamestop i get compliments for being good at GH/RB.

Then when im bored at school i just play Street Fighter on the psp. Fuck science, im doing combos.
It never occurred to me what people thought of gaming in public. I always play my PSP or DS on the 50 minute train ride to and from work, sometimes (actually most of the time) I almost miss my stop. I rarely see other gamers on the train though.

I have also noticed that the majority of the time, the person next to me on the train watches my game. The most obvious was when I was playing Crisis Core and there was a long cutscene and the guy next to me watched my PSP the entire train trip.
At work playing my PSP or DS on lunch makes me feel like a bit of a dork. Especially when I'm asked what I'm playing and answer with "Retro Game Challenge" or "Dragon Warrior V." Like when a boy I worked with said Call of Duty was a normal game and your playing "shin fagami fagsi tree."
I saw an old lady playing a DS on the train last week. I gaurentee she doesn't give a crap what people think!
I can't concentrate on my games with things happening all around me.

But I'm always looking over to see what the person plays with their handheld. (*inner talk* Cool. God of war : Chain of Olympus..... but I totally pawned this game, and not you, *inner laugh*)
I play my DS at work while I'm on a lunch break because I need a good way to kill 20 minutes.
On a semi related note, I used to teach 3rd graders not to long ago. I usually played my DS on the bus rides going and getting back from that. One day one of the kids saw my ds in my bad and was all like "Why do you have a DS? That's for kids and you're a grownup. You're not allowed to have a DS!"

I cried a little on the inside. And then I proceeded to kick his ass in Mario Kart.
I used to fly around the country about once every 2 weeks, which meant I was constantly waiting in airports and on planes around random people. A lot of that time was spent on my GameBoy DS. If I had an internet connection I might even pull out my laptop and log into World of Warcraft. I didn't care what people thought of me.
