So I'm waiting at a bus station for my bus to come around, and I see this kid pull out his DS Lite and start playing it. After getting a closer look, he was playing one of the re-released NES games for the Game Boy Advance. That was pretty neat. But it brings up a question for me.
Are you the kind of person who would pull out their handheld in public and just start playing it?
I've only done it a few times, and I've got good reasons not to whip out my DSi and start playing Pokemon Platinum. For one, it's a goddamn Pokemon game. It's that thing where if you're caught playing it, people will look at you and ask "aren't you an adult?" Okay, well, nobody would outright do that, but personally, I like conformity.
Another reason I don't do it is because when I game, I'm not aware of what's going on around me. If I'm in public, I would be playing with headphones on so I could hear the music and sounds, and that itself helps distract another one of my senses. The only way I'd be pulled out of a trance like that would be to be physically moved, or to just ragequit.
Also, it's the community. I remember pulling my GBA out in the middle of Science class a few years back and started to play MegaMan Battle Network. The local fatass (With the last name Legros, which translates to "the big" if it's said correctly) came by after doing nothing, asked what I was playing and proceeded to call me MegaMan for the rest of the year. Sure, it was a school-situation, but it still sorta turned me off of playing videogames in public.
What about you? Do you play your handheld systems in public, or keep all of your gaming at home?
(I think this would be tagged "About Destructoid," but I don't know. Let me know if I got it wrong!)
My name is Diaport. I enjoy long walks along the beach, a quiet, fancy dinner and someone who can bring a smile to my face when I'm at my lowest, and...
What? This isn't for that sort of thing? God dammit.
Okay, let's try that again.
My name is Diaport. And I fucking love videogames. Growing up, I played the hell out of MegaMan 2 and 3, Super Mario Bros. and so on, then moved onto other awesome games. As a little kid, you know when your stay-at-home-dad would give you story time? He played Final Fantasy 1 and my two brothers and I would watch in awe. Talk about story time.
We weren't a Nintendo family, though. We were always fortunate to get more and more. Soon after that, we got the Genesis. Then the Super Nintendo. Didn't get the Sega CD or any of the stupid Genesis add-ons. Years went by and I remember after coming home from the hospital once (I was one sick kid), I came home to a Nintendo 64. Nothing is more awesome than having pneumonia, coming home and having the newest game system still in the box, waiting for you. Well, y'know, family thing, wasn't completely mine.
After that, you know. Playstation, Gamecube and Dreamcast, PS2, X-Box, two Wiis, 360, PS3, another 360.. We don't like sharing anymore, 'nuff said.
I'm not too picky when it comes to game genres. If it's not a sports game, I'll play it (Samit must be the only person to ever like sports games, haha). RPG, platform, FPS, I'll play (and do horribly on) RTS, uhh.. Jeez. My favorite games are too many, but I guess I'll throw a list out there.
MegaMan 2/3/9, Resident Evil Remake/2/3/Zero, Pokemon Yellow/Silver/Platinum, pretty much the whole Touhou series (Though they're near fucking impossible), and Final Fantasy 1/3/4/7, though the only one I've beaten is FF7.
I currently work at a gas station doing overnight shifts. It's not a horrible job, really, since most of the work is putting up with my boss (Which is surprisingly hard). The best part about it is that I'm allowed to bring my laptop with me, and with the wireless signal, I'm able to connect to the internet. Since I sleep at day, I usually come to Dtoid during the night to read the stories and, now, to post blogs, I suppose.
Anyways, I have a question for you guys. I'm getting myself a Wii points card and Microsoft points card tomorrow. After Castle Crashers and Pulseman, what games should I get?
