Pendelton Store Update: Halloween Sprites and Such
DestructoidArtisans | 4:22 PM on 10.05.2009 5 comments

For my birthday earlier this year, I received an unexpected gift from my sister; a package of glow-in-the-dark Perler beads. At first, I didn't think much of them, and tossed them in the back of my closet. Well, a couple of days ago, I stumbled on the bag, and thought that I needed to use them. Seeing as my Etsy store was getting a bit light on content, I decided to come up with a Halloween sprite collection, all using these glowing plastic beads! Here's what I came up with:

A zombie from Ghosts N' Goblins. The black beads do seem out of place, yes, but when it's glowing in the moonlight, it looks pretty awesome.

Dry Bones. My favorite of the collection; he's just so damn cute!

Boo. Simple as that.

Drakee, from Dragon Warrior/Quest. Got to use all the glow colors in this, which looks really cool in the dark.

Also, if you'll check my store, you'll find some new additions, like a happy Wario and my favorite new piece, shooting star Kirby. So take a look, find something you like, and you too can decorate your home with some awesome bead sprites for your Halloween festivities!

Epic 8-bit Art: Piranha Plant Scarf
DestructoidArtisans | 9:08 AM on 10.05.2009 10 comments

DO WANT.

I've always been a fan of crocheted game art, from the awesome goomba hat my mom made me, to the creations of our own Shadowsinthenyte. There's just something so awesomely nerdy about wearing this stuff around. And, with winter coming up, warm videogame hats and scarves should become more popular.

If I could have my choice of the many different gaming scarves out there, I would definitely want this awesome crocheted Piranha Plant scarf. Not only is it functional, it's a pretty interesting take on Mario art. Now to print off the pattern and give it to my mom...

Artist DigitalMushroom has put put his sculpting skills to use and created some very nice Earthbound minis.

These Sanctuary minis are my favorite. I hope he gets around to doing all eight.

Here's a few enemy models:

Lilliput Steps has already sold, but the rest are still available at his shop.

Epic 8-Bit Art: Nintendo Cartridge Art
DestructoidArtisans | 5:38 PM on 10.02.2009 8 comments

Created as part of the Handmade Brighton Art Event, these old Nintendo cartridges were given a second life with a splashy paint job and a basic black frame. I've always wondered what to do with broken cartridges and now I know - frame them as art.

The artist, Please Flush, seems to be constantly involved in community art events in his hometown of Brighton, UK, so if any of our Dtoid community members are from the area, I would suggest checking out more of Please Flush's artwork around town. You can check out his blog for more information.

Or better yet. Check out the Handmade Brighton Event happening October 4th. Details here.

Epic 8-Bit Art: The Death of Mario
DestructoidArtisans | 10:00 AM on 10.01.2009 11 comments

The Destructoid Artisans Group is going to be going through some changes over the next month. Sort of under new management, the group has decided to add some new features along side our monthly contest and one of those features will be the Epic 8-Bit Art post which will highlight videogame artists from around the net.

We will cover all types of art: from bead art to drawing to lego to custom toys. Anything that's fanmade and videogame themed.

Today's artist, Pakotoo is a Flickr friend of mine that cover pop culture icons in all his drawings and pixel art. Today I thought I would showcase his newest Mario themed pieces, The Death of Mario but he also has more work on his flickr page that is worth checking out.

Look for more Epic 8-Bit Art post on a regular basis as well as new features for our blog soon.

UPDATE: Win Tales of Monkey Island with a Picture of Guybrush
DestructoidArtisans | 2:09 PM on 09.30.2009 16 comments

On Monday, the Destructoid Artisans Group announced their SCUMM contest and all the sweet details that go with it; however we decided to sweeten the contest deal to ensure all your hard work making that life-size purple tentacle out of beer cans is worth it.

Not only will you be able to still win all three of the prizes we listed earlier but now each prize winner will also receive a full season (that is 5 episodes total) of Tales of Monkey Island (worth $34.95), thanks to our friends at Telltale Games who were awesome enough to sponsor our contest.

Even better is the fact they have given us 5 game codes to give away, so we are changing the prize lot to include 5 winners! Now 5 people can walk away with a custom made SCUMM item made by one of the Dtoid Artisan members as well as a full season of Tales of Monkey Island.

So I suggest all everyone get working on their art piece because you only have 3 more weeks to make something in order to win one of these fabulous prizes. Check out below for the revised contest details and new prize lots.

Entry:
The contest is open to anyone on Destructoid. Submissions, or reliable links to the submission, should be posted in the comments section. Submissions will be accepted from now until Midnight, EST, on 10/19/09.

Submissions:
We're looking for original works of art. The following mediums will be accepted: original images (photography, photoshop, paint, chalk, etc.), crafts, statuary/models (any real life object you can make), textiles, and food. All submissions must be original and specifically created for the contest. All submissions must have the Dtoid Artisans Team logo displayed even if it's just in the bottom corner. Attempts to submit photographs of your purchased Sam & Max t-shirt from the 1980s with the ketchup stain on it or Indiana Jones aka Harrison Ford’s lock of hair which you got after he got drunk with you one night at a legion will result in community mocking. Also we'll convince Hamza to send his shark after you.

List of Games You Can Use:

Maniac Mansion
Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Loom
The Secret of Monkey Island
LeChuck's Revenge: Monkey Island 2
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
Day of the Tentacle
Full Throttle
Dig
The Curse of Monkey
Grimm Fandango (Not a SCUMM Game but too good not to include)

Judging:
A panel of judges from the Destructoid Artisans Team will scrutinize all works, looking at factors such as beauty, complexity, skill, dedication, and of course sheer awesomeness. The top five entrants will be awarded prizes beyond their wildest dreams, and receive the adoration of the masses. There may also be hookers and a fruit basket. No promises.

Prizes:
Each winner will win a copy of the PC version of Tales of Monkey Island from Telltale Games. The game code will entitle the winner to the full season of Tales of Monkey Island featuring 5 episodes. Game codes were provided by our sponsor, Telltale Games, who rock the retro adventure game world! Plus each winner will have a choice of a handmade item from the list below. 1st place winner will have first choice, 2nd place winner second choice and so on.

1. ShadowintheNyte's Crocheted Purple Tentacle from Day of the Tentacle

Destructoid Artisans Profiles:

Pendelton21
"Long ago, in an ancient and divided land, a great sorcerer was called upon to bring joy and unity to the nation. He was Pendelton21, known throughout the land as the one true plastimancer, the true wielder of all things plastic. Known for his proficiency for tiny plastic beads, Pendelton21 was asked to create works of art that would cause enemies to unite as friends, kings to bow to one another, and people around the nation to become content. So, the great plastimancer got to work, creating ontold beauty out of the lava from Mt. Vargauna, "sacred perler beads" from the Michaels down the street, and a rather reliable video game sprite database. Those works of orgasmic pulchritude, lost to the sands of time, have now been recovered, and are available for sale at good sir Pendelton's Etsy store (with shipping included). So, come all ye seeking the true beauty of the old land, and obtain the true works of plastimancer Pendelton21 (or, just go buy them because Pendelton is poor as shit and needs cash)!"

Craineum (aka BabaGEEK)
"I have been a father for three years and a geek my whole life. My geekiness is being passed to my kids without any thought or effort from me. I have been creating items and activities for my kids since they were born. I started to think that maybe others might want some of these things for raising their own kids, thus was born BabaGEEK. BabaGEEK Creations will be bringing you items for you and your growing geek family. Whether its a t-shirt that express's your inner geek, or a baby mobile that will get your young 'uns heading in the right direction early, or custom costumes for your families favorite cosplay events, BabaGEEK has the goods you desire."

Rio McCarthy
"My name is Rio and I've been crafting for as long as I could hold a pencil, which coincidentally is about as long as I've been playing video games as well. I like to do almost any and all crafts, especially drawing, sewing and painting. I'm most well known for making character hats, but that's not all you'll find in my store, so be sure to check back for future surprises. I'm all about the cute, so you never know what you might find in store for you at Rio's Renditions!"

Welkstar
"Adam Welker is Welkstar's handsome, mild-mannered alter-ego. Best known 'round these parts for his work on the RetroforceGO! t-shirt and arcade cab, he is an art school monkey with aspirations of one day becoming a famous cartoonist/animator/designer/pimp. But for now, he'll just settle for being decent at playing video games. (He's kind of lazy like that...) Adam specializes in pixel-perfect-paintings, custom character commissions, super sweet shirts, and all things retro. Join him in the games-as-art (or was that "art-as-games"?) crusade! Visit his Etsy store, "Welkstar's Wares," he'll create a special work of art that will look perfect in your game room, living room, rec room, bathroom, or creepy-ass dungeon lair. BADICAL!"

Taticakes
"epicWorks Creations started out in a small kitchen with big ambition. Originally known as epic SugarWorks, it consisted of a couple of friends who liked to bake cakes for friend’s birthdays. Gradually, as epic SugarWorks incorporated unique handmade lollipops with video game and anime themes, we began selling our ‘edible art’ at anime and video game conventions. Now we have incorporated charms and jewelry into the mix, giving birth to epic CharmWorks, and bridging the two through epicWorks Creations!"

Faith
"I started creating bead sprite art back in May 2007 when I came across another artist’s work named Foglera on Flickr. It was then that I got the itch to combine my love of art with my love of videogames. I open my Etsy Store, Pixelated Creations, a couple of months later and I haven’t stopped created my bead art since. I always try to put a little bit of everything in my store for videogame fans, but if you don’t see what you want for sale, remember that you can email me at thegirlgamer.net@gmail.com for a custom request."

Shadowsinthenyte
"My Grandmother taught me to crochet when I was eight or so. I dropped it, and didn’t pick it back up until I was 22 and my husband needed a scarf to keep him warm at his outdoor job. Once I’d relearned, I didn’t want to loose it again, so I started making odds and ends including a hat that looked like a Moogle. When I decided to switch careers, my husband recommended making and selling hats on Etsy to keep me in gas money while I went back to school. We came up with a few designs and the floodgates just let loose; for every design I’ve made I’ve got three more that I think would look sweet. The longer I do it the more I learn about crocheting, materials, business, and people and I really feel I’ve grown as an artist because of that. Even if no one is buying, I don’t think I could stop. I’ve just got to see how the next design will turn out."
