Destructoid Artisans Profiles:

Pendelton21
"Long ago, in an ancient and divided land, a great sorcerer was called upon to bring joy and unity to the nation. He was Pendelton21, known throughout the land as the one true plastimancer, the true wielder of all things plastic. Known for his proficiency for tiny plastic beads, Pendelton21 was asked to create works of art that would cause enemies to unite as friends, kings to bow to one another, and people around the nation to become content. So, the great plastimancer got to work, creating ontold beauty out of the lava from Mt. Vargauna, "sacred perler beads" from the Michaels down the street, and a rather reliable video game sprite database. Those works of orgasmic pulchritude, lost to the sands of time, have now been recovered, and are available for sale at good sir Pendelton's Etsy store (with shipping included). So, come all ye seeking the true beauty of the old land, and obtain the true works of plastimancer Pendelton21 (or, just go buy them because Pendelton is poor as shit and needs cash)!"

Craineum (aka BabaGEEK)
"I have been a father for three years and a geek my whole life. My geekiness is being passed to my kids without any thought or effort from me. I have been creating items and activities for my kids since they were born. I started to think that maybe others might want some of these things for raising their own kids, thus was born BabaGEEK. BabaGEEK Creations will be bringing you items for you and your growing geek family. Whether its a t-shirt that express's your inner geek, or a baby mobile that will get your young 'uns heading in the right direction early, or custom costumes for your families favorite cosplay events, BabaGEEK has the goods you desire."

Rio McCarthy
"My name is Rio and I've been crafting for as long as I could hold a pencil, which coincidentally is about as long as I've been playing video games as well. I like to do almost any and all crafts, especially drawing, sewing and painting. I'm most well known for making character hats, but that's not all you'll find in my store, so be sure to check back for future surprises. I'm all about the cute, so you never know what you might find in store for you at Rio's Renditions!"

Welkstar
"Adam Welker is Welkstar's handsome, mild-mannered alter-ego. Best known 'round these parts for his work on the RetroforceGO! t-shirt and arcade cab, he is an art school monkey with aspirations of one day becoming a famous cartoonist/animator/designer/pimp. But for now, he'll just settle for being decent at playing video games. (He's kind of lazy like that...) Adam specializes in pixel-perfect-paintings, custom character commissions, super sweet shirts, and all things retro. Join him in the games-as-art (or was that "art-as-games"?) crusade! Visit his Etsy store, "Welkstar's Wares," he'll create a special work of art that will look perfect in your game room, living room, rec room, bathroom, or creepy-ass dungeon lair. BADICAL!"

Taticakes
"epicWorks Creations started out in a small kitchen with big ambition. Originally known as epic SugarWorks, it consisted of a couple of friends who liked to bake cakes for friend’s birthdays. Gradually, as epic SugarWorks incorporated unique handmade lollipops with video game and anime themes, we began selling our ‘edible art’ at anime and video game conventions. Now we have incorporated charms and jewelry into the mix, giving birth to epic CharmWorks, and bridging the two through epicWorks Creations!"

Faith
"I started creating bead sprite art back in May 2007 when I came across another artist’s work named Foglera on Flickr. It was then that I got the itch to combine my love of art with my love of videogames. I open my Etsy Store, Pixelated Creations, a couple of months later and I haven’t stopped created my bead art since. I always try to put a little bit of everything in my store for videogame fans, but if you don’t see what you want for sale, remember that you can email me at thegirlgamer.net@gmail.com for a custom request."

Shadowsinthenyte
"My Grandmother taught me to crochet when I was eight or so. I dropped it, and didn’t pick it back up until I was 22 and my husband needed a scarf to keep him warm at his outdoor job. Once I’d relearned, I didn’t want to loose it again, so I started making odds and ends including a hat that looked like a Moogle. When I decided to switch careers, my husband recommended making and selling hats on Etsy to keep me in gas money while I went back to school. We came up with a few designs and the floodgates just let loose; for every design I’ve made I’ve got three more that I think would look sweet. The longer I do it the more I learn about crocheting, materials, business, and people and I really feel I’ve grown as an artist because of that. Even if no one is buying, I don’t think I could stop. I’ve just got to see how the next design will turn out."

spaztam
"Well im 22 years old, i have a son that was born september 11 09, ive been sculpting with polymer clays since i was about 12-13. i started off making rather undetailed girls/fairys, and baby dragons... and over time i grew to do more and more detaile. I do custom orders, id say im fair priced. I grew up in southern new hampshire (USA) when i was 18 my mother moved to Alabama.. and i went with her, i moved back and forth a few times, but ive been in alabama now since feb 1st 2008, i met my husband over the internet.. like the uber dork i am harhar. and like i said, i now have my son. love getting new ideas for things to make, so feel free to drop me a line!"

Ready for PAX? Not without these!

Yes, I am using my kids again to increase post count.

I got this idea to do helmets for people going to PAX (or anything convention really). The idea of having an army of MrDestructoid's show up at an event, and be everywhere made me a little giddy. So here are the fruits of that thought.

I started with posterboard since it was cheap and I was coming off my papercraft project. I also wanted the helmets to fold up for easy shipping (read fitting into a suitcase).

First attempt, very flimsy.

Second attempt, stronger, but proportions off. Made wearer look like they had a tiny head.

The posterboard was ok, but not strong enough to keep its shape well. It was also not really all that weatherproof. Plus my acid skin proved to be too strong for the posterboard, and made it a huge pain in the butt to work with.

I fell back and rethought my materials. Still wanting something that was fairly inexpensive and would ship well, I went with a mask idea. Enter the first Mr Destructoid Mask:

This is made from sheet foam. It has some wood to keep it rigid and the eye's are made of red acetate. Foam glue holds it all together and an elastic string holds it on your head. Its about 9" x 10" and should cover most heads. The mask does put a bit of pressure on your nose, but you can wear if for a while before it gets uncomfortable (I will be trying to improve on this design).

This was great! But I still wanted a full helmet. Ditching the easy shipment idea (since I already had the mask), I went hunting for another material, and I found one, a very very strong one. Here is the full Mr Destructoid Helmet:

This is made from corrugated plastic (Coroplast), the stuff you see cheap signs made out of. It is hot glued together (so no folding down). Green electrical tape covers the seams, grey and black electrical tape used for the face elements (going to check on getting some vinyl sheets to do this instead). Red PVC sheet for eyes (Makes the eye's darker compared to the acetate used in the mask). The coroplast is hard to work with, but I think the results are well worth the effort.

These helmets will be custom fitted. I will need measurements from you if you are interested in purchasing one. Also, order early as it takes me time to build them, don't wait to the last minute, because if everyone does, I won't be able to get them all done!

If you are interested, please check out my Etsy store. Like I said, I think it would be badass if a crap load of Member's show up with these things on at PAX. I am not saying this to make money, this effort is much more a labor of love for the amount of time it takes to build them. If I can reduce my costs/time I will relate this in the cost of the products.

Here are some more pics:

hmmmm, I wonder how much it would be to have the corrugated plastic ones manufactured in a limited run?

I'd certainly buy one.

Awesome, but how the hell do we get them to PAX? If you wear it, does it count as a carry on?

@Bullettrain If I get enough people together I can look at that. It is a fair amount of build to get it all together, but a bunch ordered at once would help alot.

@Nihon I wonder how Niero gets around with his? His new one is like twice the size of mine.

You could probably get it in a suitcase, and pack cloths in and around it?!?

why not have a bunch waiting there?

I might go seeing it is only a 4 hour drive.

I dunno' picking one up there might be more practical.

Seeing the turquiose-ish color of the last helmet pic it seems that different colored helmets, all within the green-ish spectrum, would be cool, no?

So Niero takes his helmet as a carry on and leaves way early in case there are any issues with security. But his is a little more extensive with the lights and all.

Thanks for the info Niero!

As far as the other suggestions... I will rack my brain trying to design the corrugated plastic helmet so it can break down. I got a couple idea's, but it will be a matter of finding the components and cheap.

I want to come to PAX just not 100% sure on funds. Bringing these there to sell would be a good idea, except I would have a suitcase full of parts to make the helmets.

Haha the amount of epic shit going down at PAX via Dtoid makes it seem less like PAX and more like a Dtoid convention.

Seeing hundreds of people with these would be hilariously cool.
