What's with games today half-assing dialog and storyline? Every game I play recently throws in the standard "Explain plot through cutscene then player plays then another cutscene" formula. Why do I need to beat a level to learn the deeper plot points? Is there anyway to mix plot and playable together? I hope to god there's a way because if games evolve, the cutscene needs to go the way of the Dodo.

Have you played Bioshock? It has story line that does exactly what you want it to do.

I'm one of the ones who actually likes cutscenes, but I also appreciate a game that can tell its story during the playtime as well. One of the best efforts ever put forth in that respect wss Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Yes, it used cutscenes, but during one part of the game, you're playing as normal while The Prince is having an internal monologue, wondering whether or not he loves the female character in the game. It made a list of best game moments in one mag, and deserved it for such perfect implementation.

A recent example of a game that tells its story with minimal cutscenes is BioShock. Save for the beginning, end, and one other scene, the exposition is realtime. There are games that do away with cutscenes and they work well, so I wouldn't worry about there not being a way for plot and playability to join forces.

All that said, I still love a good cutscene regardless. Screw the haterZ, dawgz.

Game seem to have a serious problem with too much exposition. And yes, games really need to interweave story with gameplay. I look to Half Life whenever I want an example to great storytelling without breaking immersion. As for other games --

"You know that epic cutscene?"

"Yeah? What about it?"

"Why couldn't I play through that instead of just watching it?"
