"Games, Gaming and Gamers"

Games - We all love them, that's why were here. Yet is that label itself "Games" holding back our favourite hobby? Are the connotations that people associate with the label one of the major problems that the hobby faces today. The term games conjures up images of toys and playthings that are meant for children and not to be taken seriously. I believe this is partly why non gaming society has such a hard time with adult titles like Grand Theft Auto. Despite the fact these titles have ratings on the box, to the wider public they are still just games and shouldn't contain such evil.

Is it time for a new label for the hobby? Something that reflects the wide appeal of the games today as not just play things for children, but interactive entertainment for all.

Are you one of those people who wants to change the name of "video-games" to something else?

I'm just saying that it's that label that causes a lot of the confusion.

Videogames sounds like something from the 70's when it first appeared in the public's awareness.

I think your argument is very thoughtful and bears some consideration. The lexicon of the industry does influence how it is perceived. This post is "kickin' like Jim Kelly" brah! That last bit may get lost in translation if you aren’t African-American….

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?

Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
