About Me

Let's see...

My PS2 broke down in Octoboer '05, and I was so irritated because that was the 8th time that had happened, I swore off systems. Fast forward to December '06, and my friend and I wanted to find an activity to do, but I live in Detroit and he lives in Houston. I broke down and pursued an Xbox 360, and I came out of my year long retirement from gaming.

I dig mostly on sports games, but I fell in love with sandbox GTA games. I don't spend too much time playing, as I try to divide my free time up as much as possible. But because of my narrow gaming tastes, it does not mean I'm closed off to other game types. No WoW though, I'm geeky enough as is.

Away from gaming, I love sports, comics, cartoons, anime and movies. I don't watch as much television as I use to, but I keep up with what I love as much as possible. Cartoons are all I watch on tv besides sports anyway. I also love to write. I write leisurely and sometimes I utilize blogging. I stick to short stories more than anything. I gotta find a spot to slap a link to my myspace, if that's an acceptable action around here. I'm still unsure.

GTA III Outfit Easter Egg, Soundtrack Gripe, Plus Other First Week GTA IV Thoughts
Darkknight37 | 5:28 PM on 05.07.2008 18 comments

A week or so after, I'm very pleased with GTA IV. At first, the physics engine made me feel like I was in the beginning stages of overcoming ten years of paralysis. Neverthef'ngless, I'm at my usual GTA comfort when it comes to driving, piloting, boating and whore-banging. As much as I understand the lack of a few vehicle/equipment options from San Andreas, I really would have liked to have a parachute at the very least. If anything, to slowly descend in Algonquin during night or day. Taking that visual is breathtaking as is, but I would like that option anyway. Plus, I'd like to land on top of the Empire State Building with more ease than just bailing out of a copter.

I thought the interaction with friends/girlfriends would seriously annoy me, but I find that aspect of the game to be fairly enjoyable. For the first time, I really like the minigames. Darts could be a tad more difficult, and incorporating minigames into multiplayer are my only gripes. The side stuff with friends really extends the story mode for me, as I'm trying to take my time with it as much as possible. A week later, and I'm still less than 40% done, gnarly!

One thing I'm constantly annoyed by, and is my only official knock against the game is the soundtrack. I consider myself fairly open about music, but there isn't much to go with. Is it just me, or is the music very anti-climatic? I listen to the classic hip hop, the beat, LCHC and the latin hiphop stations only. With the awesomeness of the game as a whole, and the prior soundtracks to measure up to, and the worse: lack of custom station, I, with great displeasure, declare GTA IV's soundtrack FAIL.

The outfits took time for me to get accustomed to. The initial off-the-boat outfit took little time to get on my nerves, but everything available to you at first was bleh. Thank god I got to Algonquin to get some decent clothes. When it came time to get a suit, I couldn't help but think of myself as Jason Statham, ala The Transporter. The fun came not long after when I found Claude's outfit from GTA III as an easter egg, chilling in my closet. So fresh.

I've done very little with multiplayer, as I've only been doing free roam for the most part. I'm not ready to deal with my suck just yet, as frustration could bleed over to my wanting to complete the story mode. All in due time with ranked matches.

Much love for the weapons system. It's nowhere near perfect, but its worlds better than prior games.

I'm proud to say I've gone the longest in a GTA game without the assistance of cheat codes. Since there is no properties to buy, you can use your money on weapons, ammo and armor. It works out perfectly.

The taxi system is a lifesaver when I don't feel like driving miles away, listening to the shitty soundtrack. :/

My final first week thoughts are mostly win, with the exception of the soundtrack. Any other things that bother me are primarily me begging for more when I have plenty to play with. Maybe updates down the road will supply me with a parachute, but I'll live if that doesn't come to pass. Maybe they could provide a slot for that custom radio station as well. But other than any negative I have, I'm happy to say I've gotten my money's worth in just a little over a week.

The soundtrack, while not as good as earlier games, is still pretty damn good. So you are wrong. D:<

I jam out to the talk stations (<3 WKTT), Vladivostok FM, and JNR, normally.

I agree with most everything here except your opinion of the soundtrack. I love it, from the music to the talk programs I think the sound track is the best since they started licensing songs. I especially love that radio DJ Lazlo is back from vice city's soundtrack.

I agree that the soundtrack this time around is pretty terrible. The game is set in a facsimile of New York, but where are all the New York hip hop / rap artists? KRS-One, Public Enemy, Run DMC, Beastie Boys, B.I.G., Wu-Tang, Jay-Z, DMX, etc., etc.

Most of the stations are utterly forgettable. I usually just turn the radio off and stream my MP3 player through the 360.

I don't think they could afford all of those big names. I mean they could but I'm sure those cats cost an arm and a leg.

I wish more for a custom soundtrack option. I don't mind the stuff I hear as i'm switching mainly through the vibe, Liberty City Rock, Classics, and Electro, but custom soundtracks would've been one of my first thoughts into this game.

everything else well..that's on you. I generally like to channel surf with the stations when nothing I want to hear on my main stations are on....which usually leads to me watnting to listen to a new station.

Yep. Not a huge fan of the soundtrack. They got some good ones but its not enough. Kind of made me wonder if most of the money went towards production instead of securing rights to music for the game. If that's the case, I'm not to mad but hoping the next GTA will do better in this area and raise the bar on everything else as well.

Question where did you find Claude's suite? I can't find it! Can you wear it?

When you use the "Change Clothes" option in Playboy X's suite after you, uh, "aquire" it. Scroll through the clothes and it's there.

I woulda liked some more clothing options, and customizable cars. That said, great game, and I look forward to "GTAIV: Vice City" or whatever it turns out to be (fingers crossed for London).

Yeah, I'm kinda with you on the soundtrack. The talk radio is hilarious, but the music is getting a little repetitive for me. I had to start expanding my horizons and checked out the jazz station, which is actually pretty cool to listen to as you mow people down.

I like the soundtrack, but like Char Aznable, I also had to expand a little to fully appreciate it. I went on a rampage while listening to Journey; trippy.
