Grats! Definitely check out Bioshock and Crackdown, both are now $30 I believe. I enjoyed Beautiful Katamari as well, it was $20 new although you'll be spending another $10 to get the DLC levels. Ignore the presents/cousins packs.
On XBLA, some of my favorite games are E4, Puzzle Quest, Pac-Man: Championship Edition, Uno, and Catan. Check out the trials and see if any of them are for you. I'm totally loving Bionic Commando: Rearmed, although I'm not very far in it. I just downloaded Bomberman Live as well, and enjoying it as well.

Seeing as how you just got a new 360, you'll most likely have the newest revision of the motherboard with a cooler running GPU and overall lower inside system temp.
Play as much as you want! Even if it does red ring, you'll get it replaced.
I thought Mass Effect rocked, Gears of War is an amazing game, GTA4 is at least worth a rent, Ninja Gaiden 2 has great additions over the first if that's your thing, Assassin's Creed is breathtakingly gorgeous/huge and is worth playing once (turn UI off)...

i remember my first weekend with the 360... and GoW... if you like FPS, be sure to get that, its dirt cheap by now and the second one will be coming out by the end of the year :-)
Dead Rising is the absolute BEST game on the 360. Surely its less than twenty dollars.
Also you can download demos of games for FREE.
