Room of Doom/Gaming Setup (LOOONG, Pic Heavy)
Dao2-SKP | 1:36 AM on 02.26.2010 63 comments

Hey!

So finally got around to doing a setup blog :P It's gonna be pic heavy :< And possibly wordy :P Oh and sorry for the slightly off angle and not amazing photography :< I always take bad pictures ;p Well that said here it is!

Oh and there's a fair bit of stuff I decided to leave out for when it's all done, but still the meat of it is there ;p

I'm gonna start off with the bins, since it's the only part of my collection I'm gonna get rid off eventually.

The stuff on it is a Dragon Quest controller, looks spiffy but terrible button layout :P 12" Red Canti, Outlaw Star controller, Outlaw Star Caster replica, Samaritan Replica (big and heavy :P) Arcadia from Harlock and a PS2 Shinobi standee thing, which I like because the eyes light up and down (bright as hell too ;o). Most of that stuffs gonna go somwhere else. And the bins are gonna be replaced with bigger roomier ones made of metal. Inside of em is just a bunch of extra stuff, cables, controllers, my space dreamcast, and some other stuff. Sitting ontop is my Gun X Sword "lazy van" wallscroll, one of my favorite animes.

Another wallscroll, this time for FLCL, one of my favorite animes.

Continuing with the wall loving, here's whats to the left of my TV.

-Star Wars Return of the Jedi Poster Painting - It's actually a painting, of the Return of the Jedi poster. It looks good, and was actually cheaper (clearance) than a copy of the poster.
-The Fallout poster is not the one that shipped with the game it's a bigger (and thicker one) that I got from Blockbuster.

-Down the middle is the a japenese Disk-Kun handbill to promote the Famicom Disk System (don't have the system but I love the mascot, I mean look at him!)
-Under that is a small laser cel art for Tales of Abyss for PS2, I believe it was a preorder bonus.
-The last one is a bunch of 35mm film cels from The Fifth Element, my all time favorite movie. I'm gonna get a way to light it up from behind eventually because otherwise they cells just look black :P Here's a closer pic where you can make a couple of em out.

Next up is my coffee table! When I got the table there was a bunch of big blisters on it which made it look horrible, and I don't know anything about carpentry or how to fix it so I just nailed a pirate flag ontop of it :P It's adorned by a bunch of crap in the pic (yay fifth element) and the 2 sharkies that sit in the corner a Boba Fett statue-ish thing.

And the TV it sits infront of! For some reason dtoid refused to upload this picture so I don't know if it'll fit 100% :( Sorry! Hooked up to the TV is a Model 1 Genesis (S-Vid/AV modded and region switch added so it can play jappo,uk games as well) connected to a model 1 Sega CD. To the right of that is a launch Wii, which I love and I don't care what anyone says :P Below that is a 60 gig PS3 which I got for a steal at $250. I required full BC so it would replace my PS2. Below that is an AV modded top loader NES, also the capper is switched so there's no lines yay \o/

To the right is a model 2 saturn sitting ontop of a switchbox so I can connect everything to my TV without having to go through to many inputs. Next to that is one of my 10 dreamcasts (my favorite system, this happens to be my plain white one, the others are all different shells or some case mod). It's sitting ontop of an old surge protector for a moniter. All my electronics are hooked up to that, and 2 other surge protectors behind the TV hook into that so when I turn it off the power to everything over there goes off. Saves a little bit of electricity and the old console power bricks don't heat up (they warm up even when they're not being used, not sure why but it bothers me ><)

On the right side is my gold edition SNES, original XBOX, and original N64. The n64 is my second favorite console, I don't know how people can hate on the controller ;| It's awesome! Here's a pic of the wire madness going on behind the scenes.

The custom flag sitting ontop of my TV. Skies of Arcadia is my favorite game of all time :P

And the only "part" of my extremely messy desk in this setup blog, the side-table! It sits comfortably under the right wing.

Essential for many tasks, like holding dinner.

om nom nom nom

Onto the goods then! Just a note about my collection: I don't just collection every game, they're all ones I like ;p At least 99% of them, a couple weaseled their way in there by being free and are considered expendable :P

A lot of stuff! I don't know how many games I have, haven't counted in a while, but somewhere between 500-600.

The PC games make up the bulk of my collection, almost 300. Here's most of em.

And here are some of my favorites that are old enough to have big boxes.

The Left:

-The fps that everyone loves - Duke Nukem 3D (also have the kill-a-ton collection and atomic edition sitting on the jc racks)
- Total Annihilation: The Core Contingency - total a is one of my favorite RTS, and core contingency really made it what it was. The commander pack jc set is on the racks as well.
- Sitting above that is the original Fallout, of course one of my favorites to claim one of the top spots there. I have the triple pack interplay put out on the shelves as well.
- Shogo: The Mobile Armor Division - My absolute favorite fps, if you want to hear me drone on about it for a few minutes watch my youtube video about it here -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-iUA0jMwoU&feature=email
-Homeworld - absolutely amazing story and multiplayer gameplay, wish for a 3rd and have wet dreams of owning some sort of copy of the unreleased dust wars :(
-Space Hulk ontop of that - a lot of fun for an old game, and I'm a huge fan of the 40k fluff, both the CD and floppies in there.
-Freespace 2 - Absolutely the best combat space sim out there, hands down.
-Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight - kyle katarn needs no introduction.

To the right (and middle)

- Between the 2 shelves is the Fallout 3 CE Lunchbox - Wasn't the fallout sequel I wanted but it was still a lot of fun.
- Tribes 2 - Old school fps goodness mixed with vehicle madness and aerial combat, if you haven't played tribes 2 online I feel for you.
- Ground Control - Another amazing RTS, The best singleplayer RTS campaign ever, and a real 3d camera, I have a video for that as well here -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrcSP6F5lz0
- Jump Gate: The Reconstruction Initiative - My 3rd favorite MMO, althought it was shortlived due to them nerfing it terribly. My favorites EVE and SWG don't have big boxes to fill the spot so Jump Gate got the honorary mention.
- Wing Commander IV - space combat with story and amazing production values, the whole package, and it better have been for the budget it had :P
- Elderscrolls II: Daggerfall - I wish morrowind had a big box (not the long one!) to take the spot, but Daggerfall was damn good regardless and easily fills it's shoes. I was extremely unhappy with oblivion though :/
- Some good PS1 long box games up there as well, my favorites being Rayman, Twisted Metal, and Wipeout. I also love the hell out of off-world and it seems no one else does :P

The PS1 Games

My favorite (not including the ported CT) is by far Xenogears - Great and extremely long JRPG.

Under the PS1 games, The PS2 games!

My favorites would have to be Ring of Red and Zone of the Enders: The Second Runner, MAKE ANOTHER ONE!!!

Under that: The ps3 of course.

My favorites being Valkyria Chronicles which was amazing and Wipeout HD (which I also have a digital copy of)

Sega Master System

Favorites - Asterix and Castle of Illusion.

Genesis

Favorites - Zero Wing (I don't know why people hate on it, it was damn good game ontop of having the best translation/opening ever) and EWJ

Dreamcast!

My favorite being Skies of Arcadia by a longshot but the DC was had a wealth of amazing games.
My look-back videos of Soa are http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4DPOOwphvc and part 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Zk9gckSMII

Sega Saturn

Favorites - PD Series, Dragon Force, and Daytona. The ones on the bottum right are replacement cases

GC/Wii

Favorites: SoA Legends, Hulk Ultimate Destruction, Zelda, MP Trilogy, NMH.

Xbox (no 360 yet)

All time favorite racing game - Burnout 3: Takedown

NES

Favorites - Same as everyone, SMB, SMB 3, Zelda

SNES

Favorites - Chrono Trigger, Star Ocean (repro)
Other repros - The Fireman, Little Magic (surprisingly fun puzzle game), DQ V, Secret of Mana 2, Star fox 2.

N64

Favorites - Too many :P Smash, Winback, MK64, Starfox, SM64
If you're wondering about the boxes they're plastic clamshells made to hold geni/snes/n64 carts with end labels I printed out. I forgot where I bought em from but they sold em in packs of 100, so I have a few left ^^.

I'm not sure what I want to do with the shelf above it, possibly for my Virtual Boy games (of which I only have 2 atm).

That's pretty much it! It's by no ones complete, there's PLENTY of games I want to buy and other epic stuff to add to it! Look for an update in I dunno, a year or two ^^ Thanks for lookin!

If your interested in reading/seeing more about the figure related stuff visit my the extended version of the blog on dtoid's sister site tomopop! -> http://tomopop.com/post.phtml?pk=11325&un=dao2

And as always, thanks for the great sites.

Is this post awesome? Vote it up!

Hell yes SHOGO. Favorite PC game of all time.

Of course I've moved on to consoles. You've definitely got me beat on PS1, SEGA and Nintendo games. Although I'm noticing a distinct lack of Shenmue in that Dreamcast collection.

Do we need to have a talk?

I'm not a fan of adventure games :P Yakuza for me ^^ and damn you read it hella quick! A good few DC games that I want that are missing, it's all a WIP! I don't have unlimited funds :< I haven't bought anything in a few months actually.

I need to start building too. My retro collection is borderline pathetic. I have like 50 something each PS2, Xbox and 360 games, but everything else is lacking severely. My NES and SNES are just average at best.

/sigh

Really though, you should give Shenmue a chance. It's just like Yakuza minus the Yakuza parts.

I have ;p I just can't like it though :( I'm not saying I don't recognize it as a good game, but it doesn't got a spot in the collection :<

I know, I know. I guess everyone can't love Shenmue like I do.

You do have Jet Set (Grind) Radio, though. So I can forgive you.

You have the Steel Batallion controller as well? You should display it somewhere if you do. It makes a great 'wtf is that thing?' piece when people come over.

I know, there's quite a lot of hardware that I skipped intentiolly since it's just sitting about randomly. I'll find a shelf and get everything sorted one day. The controller does get a reaction sometimes but most ppl who see it for the first time get a bit googly and or weireded "has he ever been laid" look ;p I also have the DC virtual on stick which I like more then my SB controller.

I have jet grind radio future, and jet set radio future :P Also the poster for jet grind radio, not sure what I want to do with it.

Just looked up Xenogears on youtube (I've seen it mentioned a lot on gaming sites, but never took the time to check it out). AND IT LOOKS AWESOME! Then I saw the $200 pricepoint on Amazon. Bummed, but DO WANT!

@ lil it is amazing, it's not cheap but $200 is way overpriced. heres a bin on amazon for 50 http://cgi.ebay.com/XENOGEARS-Playstation-ORIGINAL-BLACK-LABEL-MINT_W0QQitemZ400104557873QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVideo_Games_Games?hash=item5d28170d31[/img] if you hunt around a bit u can get it for like 30 or so. Or get the rom and an emu.

Looks like we have another fellow collector! ^_^ Nice collection and setup mate! d('-'d) I'm VERY jealous of your continuous shelving you have, as my collection is starting to become a clusterfuck, due to my lack of space. I'd also suggest using a spreadsheet or something similar like myself, in order to catalog and keep track of your games! =P

I'm SUPER envious of your physical copy of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 on PS3, especially since we didn't get those up here in Canada. I'm also pretty jealous of your Sega CD and Saturn collection. I have to ask though. Are those custom cases for your SNES and N64 games? Or did you cut up the boxes and such? Kudos mate!

I think you may like my tattoo (yes I'm fully aware it's a complete faux pas to have a game related tattoo but screw you haters):

It's slightly altered (an example being the fact that there's another skull hidden in the eye) and it's designed to look like it's been drawn on parchment, but otherwise pretty accurate.

It's also a really crap picture because I took it freehand at an awkward angle so it's slightly stretched.

@ hkun - haha yah, the good thing though is you can't see it unless go and look behind the tv

@funk - yup, been collecting bout 3 years now, my collection doesn't grow at the amazing rate yours does. I keep up with your blog it's fun to read. The shelving is actually 2 of the shelves just pushed together, looks good though. I've tried a lot of different ways to manage my collection, but the only way that ever does it for me is on hard paper in a notebook. Unfortunately that makes counting difficult :P

The boxes are plastic clamshells made to hold geni/snes/n64 carts with end labels I printed out. I forgot where I bought em from but they sold em in packs of 100, so I have a few left ^^.

And don't feel envious of the retail MvC2, it's crap. There's nothing in there, no artbook or music cd or physical game disc, it's an empty box just a little piece of paper with the code on it, at least it didn't cost more but damn what a rip.

@lst wow that tatoo is awesome! It looks great and the angle isn't too weird. The wings on mine were stretched out, and of course crimson on black isn't the standard colors. I never really thought about getting a tatoo of it though, doubt I will but if I had to choose your choice is the way to go!

I have some other SoA related good stuff if you look at my last blog, and some more to come but thats far away into the future ;p

@ Dao2-SKP.

I look forward to it! I've personally just ordered the Japanese limited edition copy of SOA, really looking forward to getting it in the mail. I also have the novel - I don't know a lick of Japanese though - it's more a collectors thing.

I believe I read your blog a while back when you were tying to get someone to lengthen the wings for you so that you could make a hanging out of it. I may possibly be imagining things again though.

Didn't someone vector scale the image up for you?

(Yup, no blog but I've been lurking around Dtoid for quite a while now.)

@ lst - Don't look too forward to it, it'll be at least a year :P I have the "best navigation guide" from a while ago, it's ok.

It was on tomopop I held a contest for some SoA figures for someone to clean up the fuzziness made by the lengthening and I got it in vector in the end yup. Your not imagining things ^^

Ah that's alright then, I was starting to think my mind was playing tricks on me. You have the navigation guide? That's my next purchase after the limited edition - worth the price of admission?

PS: Love your custom SoA Dreamcast controllers, the Dreamcasts are cool too but those controllers are something else.
Dao2-SKP's Avatar - Comment posted on 02/26/2010 04:21

@ lst - yah I really like how the controllers came out. The navigation guide is just a strategy guide, and there's not as many pictures as the ebay listings try to make out, so i wouldn't buy it again. There is a picture of one ship I don't recognize at all though (which got me interested in it in the first place, thought it was gonna double as an artbook which woulda been epic :P)

Also the picture cover on the listing I saw was just a little glossy cover that wasnt even't attached, there's a different one beneath it.

That's cool, I knew it was just a guide book but if it's as lacklustre as you say I may knock it down my list a tad. I still need to pick up a copy of the soundtrack so I might make that my next purchase, I've got all the music on my PC already but I want a physical copy.

Nice to know I have some readership for my hauls, hahaha! Tis greatly appreciated good sir. But yeah, don't become compulsive like me, it's terrible . . . -_-' And I'm still jealous you have enough space for your games, and it does indeed look very good! The fact that you keep track of your games through a notebook and all just makes my brain hurt . . . hahaha! =D

Interesting to know about the SNES and N64 cases. If I ever get a proper way to display the games, I may look into it. And well, I know that there's nothing inside of that Marvel vs. Capcom 2 case, but it's still a physical thing that I'm still looking to add to my collection, due to the fact that I'm a big fan of the series and have all the other iterations. =P

Much better solution :P Sorta same thing with the walls, I had it lined with posters at one point, and it works well at some places but mine didn't look good so I decided to cut down to a few choice pieces ;p
