Another Brick to the Xbox Wall
Danshir | 8:47 PM on 12.16.2008 30 comments

As you may have guessed, my Xbox 360 just became a useless brick. I was just idly watching a movie when I was visited upon by the Reaper of Red. The system died without even a whimper. Apparently I got a very popular error (E 74). While this can sometimes be JUST the av cables, in my case it's not.

So my lil 360 *with Mass Effect Faceplate =(* is going to become some type of showpiece or..something.

Anyway, Both myself and my wife decided to just say fuck it and get a Playstation 3. There is no way I'm going to get a system that can live for a single year*My NES is alive to this very day...just gotta blow in it sometimes..*

So, soon as I go pick it up I'll post my PS name or whatever system the damn thing uses.

Go blu-ray and free online play...

Y`know what, I sympathize. I almost bought a PS3 when this happened to me, both the first and second times. I am strongly considering buying one, but when it gets some games that I want to play it will be a definite buy.

I avoid using disk based games in my 360 whenever possible.

If it weren't for the fact that the 360 fails in so many ways (disk scratching, over heating, hard-drive killing), I probably wouldn't have even bought the PS3.

Damn, I must just be lucky although I've gotten 1 rrod. (Waaay back before it was a known issue) I play games constantly on my 360 without any overheating, and I haven't had a disc scratched yet. Good luck with the PS3, I'm probably going to get one sometime.

I bought a PS3 hoping to avoid the 360 debacle, only to wind up having it break down out of warranty to cost me 150 bones. And I'm still waiting to have it returned. If I were you I wouldn't automatically jump to make a larger investment out of principle unless there's games on the PS3 that legitimately interest you, especially after investing so much in peripherals and games for the 360.

360 RRoD + place to type rant = instant internets fame.

Sorry, not trying to be a hater here, I know you have good reason to vent. It's just that whenever this topic pops up, people flock to it like moths to a flame. Again, not trying to be a hater, but one'd think with the frequency these posts pop up around here that they'd just be...well, ignored, because of sheer volume.

That said, IMHO bringing up the 360 RRoD, while the issue is bad, is beating a dead horse at this point. Msoft has been feeling the pain of it and has been working hard to correct it in future 360 models, there's really nothing else that can be done about it, unfortunately. I don't think talking about it anymore is going to magically correct it.

i can see alot more people doing this when confronted with multiple buys and just giving up and switching. i'm waiting for my best friend to switch, when i got my semi-launch 60 gig he gave me so much shit that was unwarranted and since then he's gone thru 4 360's. i really hope he gives up soon.

I own a PS3 and love it. I also own a "new generation" 360, and so I hope I have no issues with it. First game you should pick up (or one of the first) is Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Not kidding, it is (to date) still the most beautifully compiled game on the system. The environments are breathtaking and the gameplay isn't bad to boot.

I wish you luck, good sir, and less misfortune in your future!

(Also, LittleBigPlanet and MGS4)

I wasn't really ranting. Obviously I'm upset about the system breaking just barely a year old. But it was more "Hey I'm getting a PS3 now, so soon as I get my username*what ever the hell the PS3 uses* I'll post it up and add people and all that madness.

Also I can't send my 360 in for a free repair, due to it being a E 74 error which isn't under the extended warranty.

Anyway, back to posting random MMO crap as is what I generally post here. Oh, and Yojimbo, I would love to play you a match of Street Fighter =).

I love my PS3. It's nice and stable. It also enjoys letting me play games.

The fact that I occasionally give it a cookie and let it sleep in my bed with me helps too.

it must also be cleaned by sticking a vacuum cleaner to the rear end, turn it on, then while its on, blow duster thru it. because just blowing duster in it will move dust to where it wasn't before while with the vacuum on it'll be sucked to the back and out, works on all systems really.

Hey, I can respect that, heck, I have a PS3 too, got it from a co-worker who hooked me up with a sweet deal on a 20 gig. Mine's almost full, though. :( Look me up when you get online, my PSN name's Webimpulse.

I agree with Sadistic.

Also, I'm sorry that this happened. Honestly, consider a PS3. I actually sold my 360 for a PS3 without my 360 dying, and I've still been happier. It's all preference, but at least nothing ever really does happen to the PS3.

Both systems have some horrible hardware issues. Let's face it, systems haven't been really reliable since cartridge systems. If I were you I would see if I could force my 360 to red ring so that it could be sent back and fixed. Or if you have the hardware knowledge yourself, I've heard that most of the problems with the 360 can be fixed after spending only like 7 bucks on parts.

Cremation sounds interesting....
