Just recently, I picked up a copy of No More Heroes for the Wii. At the moment I'm just past halfway through the game, and I have to say that what everyone told me about it was right. The game's fucking awesome, a real throwback to the beat'em ups I used to love while rolling everything related to geek culture into one insane package.
I'm having a blast playing it, but there's something wrong, something that keeps niggling at the back of my mind every time I swing the Wii-mote to perform a BeamKatana attack.
The complete lack of blood.
As you probably already know, the European version of NMH got censored so there's no fountains of blood, no dismemberment, no decapitations, and no splitting a man in half like a log (thanks Manhunt 2). After the initial disappointment of playing the game and turning someone into ash instead of lopping their head off, I tried to look at it objectively. I told myself "So what, the game play is still intact, the story hasn't changed, there's just no red stuff, no big deal", and although this is all true and I still love the game, I still feel slightly let down every time I play the game by the fact the the violence has been removed.
Why? Why should i care if there's violence in a game or not? I don't get it.
I thought about it for a while, and I realized that it feels like a lot of the games I grew up on didn't seem to just contain violence, but that the violence was a major feature of the game. In many instances, it was the only aspect that actually got me to play the game! Think of games like Mortal Kombat, Rise of the Triad (
Ludicrous Gibs!), Eternal Champions, Splatterhouse, Carmageddon & Night Trap. Whether they were goods game or not... ok, most of them were not (admit it, nobody ever played Mortal Kombat for the gameplay), I often started playing them just because there was violence and gore, and to a kid at that time, that was fucking awesome.
Maybe it's this boom of gory games that I grew up playing that has given me an appetite for the violence in games I play now. Don't get me wrong, I'm not some maniac who plays Zelda wishing that I could mutilate my enemies with blood spraying from their wounds, and I don't buy games based on their level of gore either, but chances are that if theres a
good game out there that gives you the ability to hack the limbs off people with various weapons and plenty of blood, then that games awesome factor is increased significantly for me.
Of course, my disappointment with No More Heroes might not be about the lack of violence, but more about the knowledge that I'm playing a neutered, bastardized version of the game you Americans are enjoying, but then again, tell me that being able to finish a combo by slicing a man in half vertically with a Light Saber and then see the blood spray from him Ninja Scroll style wouldn't be
fucking awesome.
tldr: The violence being cut from No More Heroes is a pain in the ass, I'm going to get Ninja Gaiden II.
So did they re-do all of the cut-scenes with graphic violence in them? Like when SPOILERSthe afro ninja girl has her arm cut offEND SPOILERS or any of the other bosses who die in extremely violent ways.
Rise of the Triad's/Eternal Champions/Carmageddon and Ninja Scroll mentioned in one post...FUCKING WIN! Love those games/movie!
Im not to bad with it NMH thus far, i taught at the beginning id miss the blood but its still a great game visually.
Oh and you might want to grab Ninja Gaiden II on playasia seeing as it only cost me 32euros!...Just said id mention it seeing as its averaging 60euros in every shop near me. Thanks for trying to fuck me economy!
That's why I imported the US version, and used my Freeloader. The blood isn't important, but it fits in with the rest of game over-the-top nature, whereas the ash effect could have been cool and stylish, but just looks lazy. Seriously, the boss cutscenes do not have the same gravitas as the US version. They just look poorly edited, sloppy, and last-minute.
TL DR: FUCK CENSORSHIP.
@ bloodylip:
Yeah they censor them to. Seems to be the same animation, just no blood or dismemberment: Here's a comparison.
The lack of blood also completely changes the statement of the game. The over the top guisers of gore work perfectly with Travis' fantasy world of crazed violence and killing and removing them make the entire game's artistic vision completely neutered. If this happened with some other piece of high end art there would be riots in the streets from hippies and educated college students.

@Twincross
I bought a Freeloader with Brawl but because my Wii was previously modded it doesn't work. Good advice to the blood worshipers though.
Yes, I'm right there with you. I LOVE having blood in my games. There is just something about it that adds a sense of "fuck yeah" to my game that probably originated with my obsession with PC gaming. There was a time when PC gaming was where you went if you wanted violent games. Wolf3D, Doom, Duke 3D, Quake, Diablo, Warcraft, Lands of Lore, etc. etc. Those were the games I enjoyed getting my frustrations out on the most. That and my favorite anime series like Berserk, Golgo 13 and Claymore. Although Ninja Scroll is definitely up there on my list. Blood blood and more blood I say. Stop pussy footin' around the idea that violence is okay if there is no blood. Bullshit.
I'm always confused when games don't include blood. Drake's Fortune for instance. Why is it that when I shoot someone between the eyes with a fucking shotgun, I get no blood. Not even a small puff of red. Even after I empty my chamber in to their dead body. I get nothing. Thats just god damned silly. I like game developers that have the balls to include violence with their violence. Its only fair.
Censorship can blow me. Added features like allowing people to turn blood off and parent lock it should be a given in all games these days in my opinion. That way no one would have any excuse to whine about little Johnny playing a violent game and I'd still get my blood. Everyone wins. *sigh* If only.
I love your banner by the way.
It does take a lot of the "over the topness" out of it
Knowing I was playing the neutered version only seemed to bother me when I wasn't actually playing the game. For me the game was mostly about the dialogue and the didn't cut that (did they?).
@Cowzilla: It was pretty annoying watching the cut scenes and seeing shots that I knew were made just to focus on the violence. The story is still awesome, but just hurting Shinobu a bit doesn't have the same impact as cutting her arm off.
And cheers about the banner! :D
@Dementor: I completely agree. Games should have an option to turn the violence off if the developers are that worried about it, rather than just removing it from the game and spoiling the experience for us gore whores.
@Y0j1mb0 :
Yeah I don't get how a game like Viking can have you slice a guy in half with entrails falling out of them (that's right, ENTRAILS) and yet the over the top blood eruptions in NMH are cut out.
It's funny because whenever I see a game that is so violent that it is ridiculous I actually get nostialgic of the games of old. The word that fits these games perfectly is ultraviolence, god I miss it *sniff*
With that said, bring on Ninja Gaiden II!
