It's hard to imagine that a mobile phone game for girls could stir up as much controversy as Grand Theft Auto has, but GamePolitics has already rustled up some quotes of criticism from several outlets.
Coolest Girl in School puts players in a mobile high school sandbox, letting them do all the silly things high school girls do in a battle to be the most popular. From the developer's Web site:
Experiment with fashion! Experiment with drugs! Experiment with your sexuality! Cut class! Spread rumors! But try to avoid dying of embarrassment- literally!
Even though it's in beta, the Australian Family Association already doesn't like it:
The activities in the game have been shown through vast amounts of research to cause significant, long-term problems for young people.
Youth media consultant Anastasia Goodstein makes a point about the game's realism:
Coolest Girl In School sounds a lot like high school. Do girls need to play a game to remind them of high school’s depressing social hierarchy?
There are other criticisms, and we haven't seen the game yet, but it sounds like a fashion and social sim in a sandbox setting, and the studio is calling it a "mobile RPG." It sounds pretty harmless to me. Will we eventually end up blaming bitch slaps on gaming?
jk <3
haha
Calculus fails me again!
wait the game can't be THAT old. how can you prove it creates long-term problems if it has only been out for a short time?
FAIL.
So far, DHSGiT is just a demo, though. (mac and pc)
