About Me

Whats up Destructoid?
My name is Sean McLoughlin and I've been sent from the futurepast to march with my fellow robots to victory. For Niero!

My favorite games can be numerous (as I'm sure is true of most here at Dtoid), but my all time favorites are Final Fantasy VI, Diablo II, Bioshock, Braid, Demon's Souls and Metal Gear Solid. I never rent games and I rarely trade in or sell the games I buy so I have a pretty massive game collection. For the sake of space I'll just list the consoles and portables that I own: NES, SNES, Genesis, Game Gear, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Advance, Playstation, N64, Playstation 2 (one original which is broken and a Slim), Dreamcast, Gamecube, Xbox, Neo Geo Pocket, Nintendo DS, Nintendo DSi, PSP 2000, Xbox 360 (red-ringed once), a fully backwards compatible Playstation 3 and a Wii.

When I'm not in school or gaming you can probably find me reading a science fiction/fantasy novel or an issue of Wired or some such. My favorite authors are George RR Martin, Terry Brooks, Garth Nix and Terry Goodkind. I'm also a big fan of movies, my favorites right now are The Departed, Smoking Aces and Crank, although my all time favorite movie/director is Reservoir Dogs/Tarantino. I don't watch much TV and if I do its usually Discovery channel or Science Channel. I love Professional Wrestling, Y2J SAVE US! My favorite band is obviously The Grateful Dead although my musical tastes are quite varied. I listen to everything from T.I. to Metallica to Toby Keith. Also, MC Chris FTMFW!

Bored? Why not try one of the games I've made:
Floyd's Tomb
Season of Thorns

The Next Step: Political Games

Could a game like this sway your vote in 2012? Bonus points if you know what game this picture is spoofing.

Video Games as a medium are maturing every day, we all know this. Twenty years ago, the idea of a game such as America's Army being used to recruit new soldiers was laughable, now it's a reality. Today I have a question for the fine folks of Destructoid. What is the next step for so called Serious Games? We already see video game's being used as marketing (Yaris, Doritos Dash of Destruction) so what if they were used as a campaign tool to get you to vote for the next President of the United States?

What would such a game look like? Is it even feasible? Would a well designed and fun to play video game sway your vote? Or does it still come down to the issues for you? What if the game was fun to play and talked about the issues, would that seal the deal? For you non-voters, would something like be enough to make you want to vote? Tell me what you think.

If memory serves there is some sort of Obama-themed game on XBLA someplace (haven't played it, so don't know if it's pro or anti). While I don't doubt that games with political overtones could be entertaining (Does Metal Wolf Chaos count?), I'm hesitant to endorse using them as "serious" political material...maybe I'm too idealistic, but I'm kind of afraid to bring too many people into the political process who care so little about the issues that only a video game could make them bother. Then again the rest of the media is doing a pretty awful job at keeping the public informed in this area as it is, so who knows...

Hmmm... I'm Canadian. I think our game would have to be a comedy! :)

(with maybe some platforming elements as people switch parties or as parties switch platforms in a random manner!)

It's spoofing Odami.

I would be scared shitless if politicians got into games. I find it hard to imagine a game with Gordon Brown as the hero. UK politicians are a bunch of theiving, lying bastards. At least your guys are showbiz.

It's spoofing Odama, actually.

It's hard for me to imagine a game that endorses political parties. I'd like to see the medium pushed in several directions, but this doesn't seem feasible without sacrificing what makes a game work. Maybe an indie game could get away with it, but for a AAA title to do this the political messages should most likely be a more subtle part of the game as a whole.

I think it can definitely work. If it keeps the player engaged, and the player has to do things that involve actually processing the information that is given (like campaign talking points), then the player will process it more intensively than an ad or something. Just like the marketing games, as it is basically just a marketing game about marketing ideas instead of a brand. Then again, are political campaigns any more than just marketing your name and face these days? :)

It would be more interesting to see games that are good, and that cover both angles in an objective way. Maybe in a SimCity fashion? If you choose character Obama, your funds will decrease but your hospitals may have a bigger range or coverage. If you choose McCain, you can build a prison for free which increases employment! Something silly like that.

lol Pew, you should get into making games. I've been thinking about this for a couple days and I haven't come up with anything that good.
