The controls need to be refined, but I see a definite future in mobile games. Ever since Nokia first embedded snake onto their phones in the late 90s, mobile gaming has been getting bigger every year. These last two years has seen the iPhone and iPod touch revolutionize the way we create and the way we play video games. Now I'm left wondering, whats the next step? To me, the iPhone hints at a future where all of our devices will be condensed down to one. Can you imagine only owning one video game system, a portable one? It might happen. I personally would be all for it. A mobile, download only future would, for me, be sunny and bright, how about you? Could you give up all your consoles and handhelds in favor of a device that does it all and then some? Or do you think that just reeks of the N-Gage? My views tend to be more popular in Asia and Europe, where mobile gaming is a much more established norm than in America, where we prefer our PSPs and DSs. So what do you think?

I do some gaming on my iPhone but I use it for a ton of other things and it's easily one of the best purchases I have made in the longest time. I love it.
But I think until mobile games get their Zelda, Persona, or the like mobile gamers will never be taken seriously. It's just a matter of time.
Elsa's wonder device would be amazing. If I could keep all my media on one portable device which can then interface with my big kid TV that, that would be truly amazing. We're real close to that I think.
As for mobile gaming itself, its got potential! Its all about the control scheme. Touch screen are horrible control devices, and extremely limiting on their own. Even the iPhone leaves you very limited. And the normal phones, with the OK button in the middle of what they're trying to pass off as a D-pad? I've wrestled with that for years, and I can do pretty well with it now. But for anything action oriented, you can pretty much count it out.
There's a few gems. The mobile phone version of Katamari Damacy happens to be a nice example of playing up to the platforms strengths: use few buttons, keep it simple, do cool things with 2D. I keep pointing to Canabalt, but that's a prime example of making a game that isn't demanding for controls, but provides an exciting pickup and play experience.
The iPhone app business and development model is an amazing step in the right direction, I think. But its going to take just a little more than that to really open up mobile gaming as an important/respectable platform. Stick a phone on the outside of a DSi, and you've got yourself a stew!
Or atleast, something to talk about.
Mobile gaming still needs to find their "Pokemon" at the very least.
