About Me

Whats up Destructoid?
My name is Sean McLoughlin and I've been sent from the futurepast to march with my fellow robots to victory. For Niero!

My favorite games can be numerous (as I'm sure is true of most here at Dtoid), but my all time favorites are Final Fantasy VI, Diablo II, Bioshock, Braid, Demon's Souls and Metal Gear Solid. I never rent games and I rarely trade in or sell the games I buy so I have a pretty massive game collection. For the sake of space I'll just list the consoles and portables that I own: NES, SNES, Genesis, Game Gear, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Advance, Playstation, N64, Playstation 2 (one original which is broken and a Slim), Dreamcast, Gamecube, Xbox, Neo Geo Pocket, Nintendo DS, Nintendo DSi, PSP 2000, Xbox 360 (red-ringed once), a fully backwards compatible Playstation 3 and a Wii.

When I'm not in school or gaming you can probably find me reading a science fiction/fantasy novel or an issue of Wired or some such. My favorite authors are George RR Martin, Terry Brooks, Garth Nix and Terry Goodkind. I'm also a big fan of movies, my favorites right now are The Departed, Smoking Aces and Crank, although my all time favorite movie/director is Reservoir Dogs/Tarantino. I don't watch much TV and if I do its usually Discovery channel or Science Channel. I love Professional Wrestling, Y2J SAVE US! My favorite band is obviously The Grateful Dead although my musical tastes are quite varied. I listen to everything from T.I. to Metallica to Toby Keith. Also, MC Chris FTMFW!

Bored? Why not try one of the games I've made:
Floyd's Tomb
Season of Thorns

The Future of Mobile Gaming
DaedHead8 | 6:03 PM on 11.18.2009 8 comments

The controls need to be refined, but I see a definite future in mobile games.

Ever since Nokia first embedded snake onto their phones in the late 90s, mobile gaming has been getting bigger every year. These last two years has seen the iPhone and iPod touch revolutionize the way we create and the way we play video games. Now I'm left wondering, whats the next step?

To me, the iPhone hints at a future where all of our devices will be condensed down to one. Can you imagine only owning one video game system, a portable one? It might happen. I personally would be all for it. A mobile, download only future would, for me, be sunny and bright, how about you? Could you give up all your consoles and handhelds in favor of a device that does it all and then some? Or do you think that just reeks of the N-Gage? My views tend to be more popular in Asia and Europe, where mobile gaming is a much more established norm than in America, where we prefer our PSPs and DSs. So what do you think?

... I could give up my console if my mobile unit connected to my large screen plasma TV and gave me 1080P resolution and surround sound... and if I could use a wireless controller with it... and a bluetooth headset for chat... and look at my messages while in a game lobby... and if I could watch bluray movies from it...

:)

Yeah I'm all for it. In fact I'm post this from my iPhone right now!

I do some gaming on my iPhone but I use it for a ton of other things and it's easily one of the best purchases I have made in the longest time. I love it.

But I think until mobile games get their Zelda, Persona, or the like mobile gamers will never be taken seriously. It's just a matter of time.

Standback! I've been in mobile game QA for a few years now! I test games for a living! (well sorta...)

Elsa's wonder device would be amazing. If I could keep all my media on one portable device which can then interface with my big kid TV that, that would be truly amazing. We're real close to that I think.

As for mobile gaming itself, its got potential! Its all about the control scheme. Touch screen are horrible control devices, and extremely limiting on their own. Even the iPhone leaves you very limited. And the normal phones, with the OK button in the middle of what they're trying to pass off as a D-pad? I've wrestled with that for years, and I can do pretty well with it now. But for anything action oriented, you can pretty much count it out.

There's a few gems. The mobile phone version of Katamari Damacy happens to be a nice example of playing up to the platforms strengths: use few buttons, keep it simple, do cool things with 2D. I keep pointing to Canabalt, but that's a prime example of making a game that isn't demanding for controls, but provides an exciting pickup and play experience.

The iPhone app business and development model is an amazing step in the right direction, I think. But its going to take just a little more than that to really open up mobile gaming as an important/respectable platform. Stick a phone on the outside of a DSi, and you've got yourself a stew!

Or atleast, something to talk about.

I would never take a handheld in place of a console. Alongside, yes, but never in place of. And not if it's nothing but digital distribution.

To be honest, I'm quite content with the emulators that are being churned out. Hell, I'm on an n95 8gb and there's a rediculous amount of stuff I have on there, all the way up to Quake 3 Arena. Seriously. Impossible to play though.

I enjoy mobile gaming. It's a great waste of time and many of the games aren't too bad. GameLoft and Digital Chocolate, I think that's their names, had some pretty good games that I used to really enjoy. But I don't think I'd be comfortable with them replacing my console gaming.

Mobile gaming still needs to find their "Pokemon" at the very least.
