About Me

Whats up Destructoid?
My name is Sean McLoughlin and I've been sent from the futurepast to march with my fellow robots to victory. For Niero!

My favorite games can be numerous (as I'm sure is true of most here at Dtoid), but my all time favorites are Final Fantasy VI, Diablo II, Bioshock, Braid, Demon's Souls and Metal Gear Solid. I never rent games and I rarely trade in or sell the games I buy so I have a pretty massive game collection. For the sake of space I'll just list the consoles and portables that I own: NES, SNES, Genesis, Game Gear, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Advance, Playstation, N64, Playstation 2 (one original which is broken and a Slim), Dreamcast, Gamecube, Xbox, Neo Geo Pocket, Nintendo DS, Nintendo DSi, PSP 2000, Xbox 360 (red-ringed once), a fully backwards compatible Playstation 3 and a Wii.

When I'm not in school or gaming you can probably find me reading a science fiction/fantasy novel or an issue of Wired or some such. My favorite authors are George RR Martin, Terry Brooks, Garth Nix and Terry Goodkind. I'm also a big fan of movies, my favorites right now are The Departed, Smoking Aces and Crank, although my all time favorite movie/director is Reservoir Dogs/Tarantino. I don't watch much TV and if I do its usually Discovery channel or Science Channel. I love Professional Wrestling, Y2J SAVE US! My favorite band is obviously The Grateful Dead although my musical tastes are quite varied. I listen to everything from T.I. to Metallica to Toby Keith. Also, MC Chris FTMFW!

The Bands Most Deserving of a Full Album Release in Rockband
DaedHead8 | 2:21 PM on 06.22.2008 28 comments

Note: This could also be titled: The Bands Most Deserving of a Standalone Guitar Hero Game, however, I decided to go with the more realistic title. Also, Rockband > Guitar Hero.

So I was playing Rockband with my girlfriend last night and I started thinking about all the albums we could potentially see released for the game. There is a lot of music out there and there are plenty of bands who deserve a full album release in Rockband. These are my picks:

Dream Theater: Change of Seasons
Dream Theater belongs to a genre of music called progressive rock, or prog rock for short. Prog rock certainly doesn’t appeal to everyone but I think Dream Theater’s guitar heavy anthems are a perfect fit for Rockband. I choose Change of Seasons in particular because it is the first Dream Theater album I ever bought. I know it’s a controversial choice amongst Dream Theater fans who would probably rather see Images and Words or When Dream and Day Unite, however this is my list and I’d love to rock out to the Change of Seasons title track in Rockband:

The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Are You Experienced?
Honestly, if I worked for Harmonix or whoever it is that makes these decisions, this album would have been released long before Judas Priest’s. Jimi Hendrix is a guitar god, there is no disputing that and this disc contains some of his best work. It’s no competition for me, this is the Hendrix album I want to see on Rockband and I want to see it now! That rift from Manic Depression would make for a killer note chart:

Pink Floyd: The Wall
It’s always a tough choice for me, choosing between Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall. However, when it comes to including one or the other in Rockband I have to go with The Wall . Including The Wall in its entirety would be epic beyond words. Sure, not every song from the album has a dedicated guitar, drum, bass and vocal track but I think songs like Vera/Bring the Boys Back Home would bring a whole new feeling to Rockband’s track list:

The Beatles: Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart Hearts Club Band
This is another one I had trouble choosing. You see, I absolutely love The Beatles and my two favorite albums are Sgt Pepper’s and Magical Mystery Tour. Even though I’d love to see both included in Rockband, I had to give the nod to Sgt. Pepper’s. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds is one of the greatest songs ever written:

Bonus: The Grateful Dead: Box of Rain
I’m more than aware that Box of Rain isn’t an album but rather a song. However, given that The Grateful Dead track pack is already out and it contains a lot of the songs off of American Beauty (the album that contains Box of Rain) I doubt we will see the full album released in the game. This makes me sad because Box of Rain is my all time favorite song and it wasn’t included in the track pack. So I’m using my Cblog as a soap box. Box of Rain is an amazing song with the best vocal harmonies I’ve ever heard. Please please please Harmonix, if any of you working there have a soul, include this song in the next Grateful Dead track pack, I neeeeeeed to song along to this (and get scored on it):

Agreed with Hendrix! There are a lot of albums I would love to see on Rockband.

I totally agree that Box of Rain should be in Rock Band

I think the large majority of The Wall would be far too slow to be worth it for the parts that would actually be challenging. I kinda feel the same way about Sgt Peppers too, but there's so many other instruments, I'm sure they'd just end up having guitar play non-guitar parts. Now.... that's not to say I wouldn't buy any of these in a heartbeat... I just like to complain. :p

While I was agree to disagree with the Beatles album (only because I am not a fan) I will agree to agree with the Jimmie Hendrix album. I would buy it twice just for the pure awesomeness of it. Also Floyd.

*will agree, not was agree. Also, while I am here, how about the Cure's Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me album? Lots of guitar drivin music on that album.

I agree with all these, plus "Touch of Grey" by The Grateful Dead should also be in there.

I'm pretty sure that Hendrix's family are complete cock blocks when it comes to anything Hendrix. I don't think they'd ever give up the rights, unfortunately.

just because i agree with the list doesn't mean your opinion is worth anything. rock band is gay anyway.

regarding hendrix's family being cock blocks when it comes to hendrix rights...

more like cash whores.

@mxy

Interesting story: Jerry Garcia was once told he never wrote a top 40 hit, he responded by sitting down with Robert Hunter (the dead's long time lyricist) and writing Touch of Grey. It ended up being the band's only song to reach the top 10 on the billboard chart.

I love the song and fully support it being included in Rockband.

@Chillybilly

I'd rather see the Clash than the Cure but that's personal taste. London Calling almost made it on here.

@Simmons 2PT0
Alice in Chain's Dirt was another one I almost put on here. Layne Staley RIP.

@Psycho Terror
In todays world, the opinion of the internet is worth a lot to companies. A whole lot. I am the internet, nice to meet you.

Rage Against The Machine's debut album.

Great Basslines
Great Drums
Awesome Guitars (Funky Riffage)

I love the vocals too but maybe too much controversy. But they released Killing In The Name Of and Bulls On Parade in GH so why not?

Sorry man, but why Change of Seasons? Nonsense. Scenes was infinitely better, but I'd rather have Train of Thought, since it's one big metalgasm of an album.

@Simmons2pt0

Fuck yes!

Imagine Would?, Rooster or even Man In The Box.

@DaedHead8

Dirt is a must, i reckon its on Harmonix's wishlist for sure.

To be honest id like to see more Thin Lizzy, namely 'The Boys Are Back In Town'.

I mentioned it to HMXSean before on the official forums and he said its one they were really trying to work into the game.

They have some great tracks for parties and would really suit the Rock Band environment. The entire Jailbreak album would be a worthy inclusion.

@CALkulon

Agreed, Train Of Thought would suit the game itself than other DT albums. I'd settle for As I Am on its own! :D

It'd be hard as hell, and the band isnt nearly in the same scope of Hendrix or anything, but Protest The Hero's "Fortress" would be the sweetest slew of parts you've ever played.

hello internet, i am troll.

i kid. but seriously, i'd say that there wasn't enough profit in these full album releases to make it worthwhile. now i realise that that statement is made of opinion too, but i just don't see it taking off due to the massive variety of musical taste out there.

on the plus side, change of seasons gets plenty of play in audiosurf.

You know I respect these classic bands but I don't need them in my modern games. Throw is some Rush maybe (and perhaps you're right with Hendrix) but the rest can stay away.

Sadly, I don’t think we’ll ever see any Beatles songs in music video games — I might gain a glimmer of hope if they ever appeared on iTunes, however.

As for Hendrix, I don’t see any potential licensing issues; after all, “Spanish Castle Magic” was in Guitar Hero (albeit without vocals). But yeah, those drum parts would be fun...

And yeah. Somebody needs to put “Comfortably Numb” in a game...

I think I have this discussion every week with my rockbandmates/coworkers.

The common suggestions are

Steve Miller
Led Zepplin
Ac/Dc
Clash
Pearl Jam
The Who
Megadeth

and a whole slew of others. There is still a huge amount of legendary music that could be put into Rock Band.
