About Me

Whats up Destructoid?
My name is Sean McLoughlin and I've been sent from the futurepast to march with my fellow robots to victory. For Niero!

My favorite games can be numerous (as I'm sure is true of most here at Dtoid), but my all time favorites are Final Fantasy VI, Diablo II, Bioshock, Braid, Demon's Souls and Metal Gear Solid. I never rent games and I rarely trade in or sell the games I buy so I have a pretty massive game collection. For the sake of space I'll just list the consoles and portables that I own: NES, SNES, Genesis, Game Gear, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Advance, Playstation, N64, Playstation 2 (one original which is broken and a Slim), Dreamcast, Gamecube, Xbox, Neo Geo Pocket, Nintendo DS, Nintendo DSi, PSP 2000, Xbox 360 (red-ringed once), a fully backwards compatible Playstation 3 and a Wii.

I'm a video game designer and an RPI graduate with a degree in Games and Simulation Arts and Sciences. When I'm not working with my development group Darkroom Games or gaming you can probably find me reading a science fiction/fantasy novel or something on Cracked.com. My favorite authors are George RR Martin, Terry Brooks, Garth Nix and Terry Goodkind. I'm also a big fan of movies, my favorites right now are The Departed, Smoking Aces and Crank, although my all time favorite movie/director is Reservoir Dogs/Tarantino. I don't watch much TV and if I do its usually Discovery channel or Science Channel. I love Professional Wrestling, Y2J SAVE US! My favorite band is obviously The Grateful Dead although my musical tastes are quite varied. I listen to everything from T.I. to Metallica to Toby Keith. Also, MC Chris FTMFW!

Bored? Why not try one of the games I've made:

Season of Thorns

Superman Returns is Underrated
DaedHead8 | 6:16 PM on 06.12.2008 13 comments

Ever since I beat GTA IV last week there has been a void in my life. I’ve been to GameStop 3 different times to try and fill that void. The first time I picked up Saints Row. My first impressions of the game were that it was going to be fairly epic. However it only lasted three days and I don’t even feel the need to give it a proper review. The comparison article covered all my feelings on the game more or less. The next visit to GameStop had me going home with TMNT and Stranglehold. TMNT was awesome but way too short and Stranglehold has too many design problems for me to enjoy it. Today I walked out of GameStop with Superman Returns and Tomb Raider Legend. I’ve haven’t jumped into Tomb Raider yet but Superman is a different story.

As I walked up to pay for my games, the employee (a friend of mine since I frequent this particular GameStop) told me not to get Superman. He told me it was just crap and no fun to play. I of course didn’t listen because I remember playing the demo and having a good time with that. This isn’t the only criticism I’ve heard about the game. I remember it getting less than stellar review when it first came out. However, I’m a fan of Superman and I was pretty confident I would enjoy this title. I was right.

Superman Returns is everything I would want out of a Superman game. You have fire and ice breath, super strength and you can fly around the entire city. It does a great job of making me feel like I’m Superman. The other thing I really love about this game is how it gets around the whole problem of Superman being indestructible. The fact that the only “health” meter in the game is linked to the city itself is pretty ingenious. It really just wouldn’t make sense to give Superman a normal health meter.

The most common complaint is that there isn’t enough to do in Metropolis. I agree with that but at the same time I don’t necessarily think it’s a fault of the game. The story missions should keep me plenty busy. I don’t need every sandbox game to last 50 hours. On top of that, the bosses that I have faced so far have been pretty entertaining. A couple of them even requiring strategic timing of your blocks and combos, which negates all the people who want to claim that this game is a mere beat ‘em up.

Overall this game is highly under appreciated. Sure it’s not the best sandbox game or even the best superhero game. However, it is the best Superman game and it deserves credit for that. If you have a spare $20 (I got my copy for $12) and nothing to do this weekend give Superman Returns a shot. If you’re a fan of the Man or sandbox games in general I think you’ll be as pleasantly surprised as I was.

I didn't hate the demo and the game is pretty cheap so I might pick it up eventually. Tomb Raider Legend is awesome, it was my first TR game and I really enjoyed to plot.

It's going to be my first Tomb Raider game too. I played a bit of TR II back in the day but I never really sat down to play a TR game. I'm excited.

the demo was kind of lame to me. I check this out sometime in the future in a bargain bin if it's less than $5. And yes, I know I'm a cheap mother fucker. What of it???

Also, Superman Returns sucked (not IMO. It's a fact). Unless you were old enough to have seen the older movies and TV shows, I don't see how anyone could have enjoyed that movie.

OK, being a huge Superman fan....this blew. Of course I played it and I do own it but the only good thing about it was the flying. They nailed the flying.

I know some of the people who were on the team at EA who worked on the title and they do NOT like to talk about it. It's a sore spot for everyone on the team.

I rented it but just couldnt get into it. Same with Spiderman 3. I have to keep my memories of Hulk: UD to satisfy my superhero needs.

@Kryptinite

Thats too bad the team doesn't feel good about the product they put out. Clearly it would have been a better game if it were given more time but I could say that about any game. For what it is I think the game is good.

This game was pretty crap, but for $10 I'd consider maybe picking it up. But only cause my namesake is in it.
